In my game, two 2nd or 3rd level dwarven fighters get miserable failures on Swim rolls and drowned. It was a sad day. It happens.

For the record I bank with USAA so I don't personally have to bother with any of this nonsense.

However, Banks are private businesses who can conduct themselves however they want (unless it's illegal).

Did I suggest otherwise?

A fool and his money are soon parted and all.

I think we're saying the same thing using different words.

I may be overly sensitive to the subject. As a big bank employee I'm just tired of hearing people talk about it like the bank just punched their baby in the face.

The banks cheated people on their mortgages and caused the whole housing crisis and caused the entire economic recession/depression and then got billions in bailout money (welfare for the rich).

The banks take advantage of tax loop-holes and offshore tax havens and avoid paying their fair share of taxes, all while our government is in a deficit "crisis".

Yes they do it legally. Because they have bought our politicians. Again, they have done that legally because our political system is one that depends on money in order to run a political campaign.

So, yes, completely legally the big banks have completely subverted our democracy AND have trashed our economy. You think there's nothing wrong with that. I say they should be broken up and states should open their own not-for-profit banks and the scumbags who brought us this economic meltdown and mortgage fraud should go to jail and you should get up off your knees and wipe your chin.

I just started DMing RotRL last weekend and like other DMs I came across the common problem of Erylium's fight being so difficult for a 3rd level party.

Right now I assume this is not due to any kind of error or typo.

I'm thinking about guiding my players through a tour around town in which they will know a lot of new NPCs a some of them will give them useful items to help them.

Is this the best way to do go with it?

One suggestion with Erylium... switch out one of her spells. I switched out her Shield of Faith with another spell so her AC was a little less impossible, but still very high for low level PC's.

Despite this she still gave them a real hard time (twice--they ran halfway through the first time then came back to face her again) and then after a long battle she escaped to appear again at the end of the adventure.

Actually since only .001% of people who play D&D commit violent crimes it is obvious that playing D&D/Pathfinder actually prevents violent acts. I know without my weekly Pathfinder sessions I would be a raving lunatic.

Interesting thread... Here's some ideas of how to keep them on their toes...

Have them try to pickpocket a vampire?

Could a dragon be visiting from the mountains in human form?

Is this a feudal society where there's a local lord who provides protection to his serfs and expects them to pay him taxes? Would the lord lead or hire a posse to chase down such ne'er-do-wells?

Minister of Health: Be in charge of the healing of the population, dispersement of healing experts, medicines, magical healings, and clerics.

Master of Magical Defense: In charge of magical defenses of King, castle, and country. In charge of staff of mages who do magical spying, wards, protection and battle magic.

The owner of my local gaming store told me that he's seen a lot more interest in PF than in 4Ed.

I do understand that the marketing idea of 4Ed was to attempt to appeal to younger/video game raised players. I hope it works and brings more people into our hobby.

Meanwhile Pathfinder appeals more to me, someone who has been playing since the D&D red box basic set... I think I still have those dice. :-)

Looks great!!

A question for those DM's who are familiar with this adventure path: I have been running Burnt Offerings and the players and I are enjoying it. I've been looking at Skinsaw Murders and am not sure it's something I want to run for my group... probably because I myself am not crazy about horror/haunted house type stuff...

If I insert some other adventures/encounters after Burnt Offerings to make sure the party is of an appropriate level will I be able to just skip #2 and send my party into the 3rd part of the adventure path (and then the 4th and 5th) OR is there any important stuff from part 2 that will leave gaping holes in the stuff that follows?

Put me down for $50.

I love Pathfinder and love Paizo's work but I'm not a fan of D20 Modern and its class system. I do however love modern and sci fi genres and will definitely commit $50 to see what you guys can do with it.

If I were going to participate in this conversation, my first question would be ....

What is 'useless' in a role-playing game? Is the 'use' of a character measured only by their damage output relative to other potential character builds?

Or are these characters characters in a story - a tale of heroism and villainy, squalor and wonder, mystery and peril, that you and your gaming group are telling cooperatively together?

And in the latter case, does it matter if one character does more damage than the other, if the tale you are telling is worth telling?

Thank you. I was hoping someone was going to post something other than the "my character can beat up your character" crap.

Play the character you'll have fun playing.

Thanks for sharing your hard work with us. :-)

This will come in very handy for the game I'm running for my friends. They just started out in RotR.

I think it would be best for them fail at Thistletop and have to return to Sandpoint to regroup. Then they can be diverted by Ameiko's disappearance. At level 2 they are likely to fail. The problem is how to avoid them dying. How willing would they be to retreat?

This is similar to what happened with my players.

Movie plot spoiler:
A goblin captured during the raid revealed that part of the raid was on the boneyard. The PC's investigated and found that Ezakian Tolbyn's bones were missing and found where the ladder had been left against the wall. The party's ranger made some good tracking rolls and they followed the prints, one human and several goblins, back to the north road where they lost the tracks. Then he rolled a natural 20 to refind the trail so they found where the goblin and human tracks turned off the road beside the Thistle River.
I allowed them to track the goblins to Thistletop. The Ranger found the entrance and they went in. As they wandered the first thing they came across was several goblin dogs tied up.... they decided to take them out now rather than later. As they did so Tangletooth and Grogmort showed up and gave them hell... They were still 1st level at this point. Shelelu showed up and encourage a quick retreat. One of them was carried out unconscious.
They got back to town to recuperate, Shelelu gave her spiel, the Sheriff left for Magnimar, and that night Ameiko's employee approached them with the news of Ameiko's disappearance.

Humbled and back on track. :-)

I like this adventure a lot.

Personally I can't stand the D20 Modern class system. It's uninspired and uninspiring, in my humble opinion.
In fact I don't think the class system is necessary in a modern or sci fi game. I'd prefer a system where you have a pool of points to use to choose skills, feats and traits.

As far as genre... I'd love to see a space game in something like the Freelancer computer game setting.
I'm also a big fan of Post-Apocalypse as well as Alien invasion games.

There's a German game that was supposed to be translated into English by Catalyst Games--that game is called Degenesis. Perhaps something with that kind of dark, future-earth, post-apoc feel.
