Description:
A muscular turqoise dragon, with a row of spines on his back and frils on his head that look like a pale ruff. For those humanoids used to Golarian dragons, there seem to be odd features to his build, most notably his more hand-like foreclaws. The shine of his scales and his confident and graceful pose is slightly spoiled at close range by the persistent smell that puts people in mind of a nearby alchemical lab. Background:
Born in an unusally large clutch of eggs tended by warden The Proud Progenitor, a Lung Taninim, Caurast has always needed to prove his worth compared to his brothers and sisters. As he was the last the hatch by a several years, he lacked the claim to a good fiefdom of The Proud Progenitor's territory of the Lost Islands. Since his youth made it difficult to challenge his elder sibblings, he settled for a territory of his own close to the dreaded Well of Oblivion. But the Elder Voices did not have confidence that the young and inexperienced Caurast had the wisdom or the skill to deal with any threats that might come from the well. Not wanting to risk losing another one of their race to the taint of the Well, the Elder Voices forced him to give up his claim and ordered him to settle instead in a far smaller territory as a vasal of his oldest sister. Because of Caurasts repeated protests against this decision, the Elder Voices gave him the name "The Taintseeker" during his Rite of Naming. Caurast greatly disliked the judgement implied by this name, thus he kept his hatching name Caurast. However, he has begun to appreciate the new name ever since he begn to realize the unusual potency of his acidic biology. Not being content with his small territory and low position in the hierarchy, Caurast demanded that he be allowed to cross the barrier to the material plane, where he hoped to obtain the fortune and power he felt he had been denied in the Lost Islands. Although the Elder Voices warned him that he would do better to grow stronger before risking such a journey, they eventually relented and allowed him to travel to Golarion. His 6 year stay on Golarion has not been an easy one. He has had to accept that the humanoid races, which were servants to the Taninim in the Lost Islands, are not as few, as weak or as deferent to Taninim. Nonetheless, he has survived and learned to at least get along with the local populace. He has also realzied the futility of simply setting himself up as the Master of any significant territory, as any desirable lands were either claimed or threatened by numerous other powers. Instead, he has made his living by hiring out his services for adventurers or arcane scollars. The former has helped him build up his considerable fighting strength, the latter has helped him develop his own arcane power. Recently he has hired himself out to the Andoran army, often as a scout, messenger or bearer of supplies. While he didn't care much for these menial jobs, he hoped that proving his reliability and skill would be a stepping stone to a commission. However, few of Andoran's commanders were comfortable putting their soldiers under the command of a dragon who seemed to crave authority and power. (Although similar sentiments weren't unknown among officers, the fear of being commanded by a draconic tyrant was greater than a humanoid one.) Luckily, Caurast has just heard of a new opportunity: The Andoran army wants a group who's members aren't obviously recognizable as their own to reastablish control over an old but (presumably) mighty and important fortress. Even the news that this power would probably have to be shared couldn't dampen Caurast's spirits as he volunteerd.
Personality:
Like the Brine Dragons known in Golarion, Caurast desires power and authority over "lesser" beings. However, the past few years in Golarion as a relatively small and weak creature have at least made him see the value of prudence and moderation of his impulses. He has found that some kinder words, backed up by his own confidence, can accomplish a lot more when dealing with humanoids of moderate power. However, he still has little patience for anyone without obvious power or skill who doesn't show him "proper" obedience and deference. Caurast is not displeased with the adventurer's life. Although he regrets that wandering the land doesn't give much opportunity to establish a place of his own, he enjoys the chance to test and improve his strength. On top of that, he cares little for the unruly and destructive ephemeral beings that seem to run rampant on this plane, without the proper order imposed by a draconic ruler. While he isn't naturally generous towards the local peasants who are the frequent victims of their rampages, he greatly enjoys the opportunity to squash the miscreants and get rewarded for doing so.
