Background Brennus was once a wizard's familiar. His memories of this time are hazy, like remembering an old dream. Clearer, however, are his memories of how it felt when he lost his master--the terror as his mind shrank down to that of a mere ordinary raven. The time after that is even hazier in his mind, with only flashes of terror as he fled a predator or satisfaction at a good meal and a safe place to sleep remaining in his memories. His memories clear on the day he first met Failin. Somehow he had become injured and fallen, dazed, to the ground near a path at a school in Taldor. There a young student found him and took pity on him. Doing his best to soothe the frightened bird, Failin took Brennus back to his room and bound up his wounds as best he could. This act of mercy attracted the attention of powers unknown... or perhaps they had been waiting for this moment. As he finished binding Brennus's wound, Failin suddenly found the bird's injuries healing by magic... magic channeled through him. And Brennus found his intellect and portions of his memory returning as a new familiar bond formed between himself and the human in front of him.
They traveled to the dangerous River Kingdoms, to the town of Thornkeep, and there met with others who also wished to explore the Spire. Together they delved deeper and deeper into its depths, facing monsters and evil men together. As Failin's power grew, so did Brennus's... but Brennus recognized that it was due only to the familiar bond, and so he kept searching for more. He found what he was searching for when they discovered a strange little creature who was actually mining shards out of the Spire. Tricking the creature into believing he was a messenger of the creature's master, Brennus got him to give the raven the shards he had mined. As soon as they returned to Thornkeep Brennus set about studying the shards, desperately searching for a way to unlock their power and take it for himself. It was when Failin came to check on him that he made a breakthrough. Somehow, when his master reached to touch him in the bed of crystal shards he had made for himself, power flowed from them through their bond and into Brennus. The raven thrilled as his mind expanded, as sorcerous powers of his own grew within him... but at the same time, guilt began to take root within him, for he realized that Failin truly cared for him, while Brennus had done little but use his master. These feelings came to a head a short time later. In spite of his success, Brennus still felt insecure--what if his new powers vanished as soon as the familiar bond was broken? And so he had continued his activities... and Failin had noticed. But to his surprise and even greater shame, Failin confronted Brennus not with anger, but with disappointment. When Brennus explained his insecurities and fears, Failin responded with understanding, which only added to the familiar's guilt. And so he promised to do his best to be kinder and more helpful to others. It was hard, but Brennus found it actually felt kind of good to not be quite so wrapped up in himself. Even so, his insecurities about his position remained, and indeed reinforced when he found himself incapable of improving upon his sorcerous powers. He became convinced that it was the familiar bond itself that prevented him from expanding his abilities, and so he and Failin agreed upon an experiment. They would break their bond, and if Brennus retained his faculties, he would remain free--otherwise, Failin would re-form the bond. The opportunity to do this presented itself unexpectedly, when a Silvanshee Agathion literally fell out of thin air on Failin during their exploration of the dungeons, a victim of the Spire's planes-warping properties. After a short discussion, the Silvanshee agreed he would be willing to become Failin's familiar in the event that the experiment was successful. The day of severing the bond was traumatic. As the bond broke, Brennus felt himself being diminished... but something was different. He had only enough time to latch onto the thought of the magical healing waters they had recently discovered around the Spire before his intellect was reduced to that of an ordinary raven. Croaking "Water! Water!", he still felt a fear whose source he could no longer remember, but his trust in Failin also remained. His former master, at first confused by the requests for water, soon caught on to the thought, and took Brennus back down to the healing waters. The waters restored his mind, and Brennus thrilled in his new freedom. Still, he had come to care for Failin and his companions (and they were soon to face a lich who would likely have powerful magical items he could study), and so Brennus remained with them until they had defeated their final foe. Having reached (as far as they could determine) the bottom of the Spire dungeons, the group of adventurers began to drift apart, and Brennus did likewise. Failin commissioned a tiny, enchanted pack for his friend as a parting gift, and once it was done, Brennus wished his former master a heartfelt farewell, with promises to visit again, and then flew out into the wide world to seek knowledge and power.
