Appearance Concept

For centuries the nobility of the Empire has sent its wayward or troublesome daughters to the Holy Convent of the Order of Merciful Sisters of Sigmar in Mordheim to be initiated into the only order of priestesses dedicated to the Empire’s patron god. The Sisters of Sigmar, as they are called, have traditionally traveled the Empire administering to the sick and poor, tending to the needs of orphans, curing the diseased and mending broken bodies. As well as the healing arts, which they practice with expert knowledge of herb-lore and prayer. Their advice is frequently sought by those about to make an important decision, for the Sisters of Sigmar are famed for their ability to predict the fickle course of fate.

Bertradis, one of the twelve matriarchs of the order, has been with the sisters since shortly after the Sigmar’s wrath laid low Mordheim. Her tenacity, fearlessness, and dedication to the order has earned her respect within, and many enemies without. Her rise was marked by a number of great accomplishments of which primarily four are credited directly to her rise through the ranks.

The first accomplishment that took her from Sister to Novice was pulling her fellow sisters together and surviving the riots of the Burning City. At the Burning City Bertradis’s Sister Superior was murdered in an attempt to confuse the Sister’s ranks and to purge them from the city as heretics, surviving Mordheim sullied their reputations almost insurmountably. Bertradis managed to pull more than half of her sisters together to fight the hunters and survive the ensuing riot until their escape from the city three days later. The augur, sightless sisters with revered second sight, survived directly due to Bertradis’s selflessness and sacrifice.

Her rise to Sister Superior was marked by the recovery of a shard of the Wyrdstone, an accomplishment of its own, and the slaying of the plague demon Abzaxar. During the battle against the demon and his legions, all but one other sister were slain adding more significance and tragedy to the ordeal. The more difficult task was returning to Sigmar’s Rock as word of the shard’s liberation from the demon spread quickly, resulting in all manner of demons, corrupt men, and other monstrous creatures trying to claim it for themselves.

Her most recent accomplishment was defeating the previous Matriach, Magdalyn Ruh, a vampire that had infiltrated the sisterhood countless ages ago and played them for power and personal gain. Bertradis was isolated, punished, declared a heretic, and ex-communicated by her order over the time from when Bertradis first suspected Ruh up until she was discovered to be an undead when Bertradis had stormed her stronghold and destroyed her. After the dust had settled the High Matriach, the leader of the sisters, personally apologized and not only forgave the crimes Bertradis had to commit in her pursuit of the order’s redemption, but also elevated her to the revered position of Matriarch. The conflict with Ruh has muddied Bertradis’s reputation because sisters died trying to stop Bertradis from accomplishing her aims, but the damage Ruh had done to the order was immense and would have been much worse had she risen to lead the entire order.

Bretradis is known to be forceful, adventurous, and above all else fearless. She truly sees herself as a tool of Sigmar, and revels in specializing as a brawler often capable of standing toe to toe with the most vile brutes known to the Empire. She often credits her survival to Sigmar's fortune and the support of her comrades, her friends often enabling her to succeed where no one or none could have before her.

On her she is a simple woman that has suffered many blows to the head. She uses small words, and despite her education is ignorant of a great many things not pertaining to smiting the enemies of the Empire and returning the sisterhood to its former glory. Her low intelligence and lack of empathy does little well for her in regard to the other Matriarchs.
