Female Human Pathfinder Society GM Thistletop Combat Map

You are seated in the main hall of the Grand Lodge of Absalom, waiting for the arrival of Absalom’s newest venture-captain, a tall, dark-haired and olive-skinned Varisian woman named Eliza Petulengro. Renowned for her composure under pressure and the author of more than two dozen Pathfinder Chronicles entries, she appears in the hall suddenly, a stack of chronicles in her arms, and looks you over before speaking.

The Venture-Captain takes a deep breath before launching into her briefing, “My greatest pupil, Pathfinder Bodriggan Wuthers, has gone missing. He followed a cleric contact back to Wuthers’s home city of Oppara to work on a massive dig beneath the House of the Immortal Son, Oppara’s famed opera house and once temple to the dead god, Aroden. That was a year ago. He sent monthly reports, hoping to see their publication in a chronicle, before all contact dried up a few months back. I’m worried something has gone wrong, and the Society has a vested interest in the artifact he was researching and seeking. We want you to travel to Oppara and find Wuthers. We’d like to know exactly what he was seeking, too, since he neglected to inform us through his monthly correspondence. He hinted only that the cleric of Irori he was working with told him the object was the world’s greatest ‘living’ artifact — whatever that means."

“I have only a few tidbits of information to pass to you before you go: the House of the Immortal Son is nearly impossible to access. It took Wuthers months and countless bribes to get where he did. For you, I have a much simpler idea. Go to an opera, wait for an opportunity, and then exploit it to find Wuthers and his dig site."

She takes a moment to appraise your trappings. “Be sure to wear something festive — the Taldan nobility are arrogant on their best days and if you arrive at the opera dressed like that,” she waves her hands at you, “they’ll surely lose your tickets or regret to inform you that the opera house is oversold. Your travel is arranged, you will have time to gather your gear and resupply before you depart. Are there any questions before you make your preparations?"

Like most season 0 scenarios, this one normally intros in flashback format, but I prefer giving the PCs a chance to ask questions if they have them. You may roll to Gather Information (Diplomacy) on the missing Pathfinder, Bodriggan Wuthers.

A dwarven shaman clanked into the meeting and finds a corner, grunting a bit as her choice of outfit is derided.

"So we've got two shades of rumor that we're chasin' down in th' fancy-pants opera house and huntin' down yer understudy? Guessin' that we're gonna have t' schmooze and wine and dine too, then? And straight up no killin' of folks, I hope?"

Pah. We're going to hear about all the horrible things what who's done to whom and all that garbage. Well, on the plus side we're going to be looking at artifacts at some point, hopefully, so this isn't going to be all bad..

She gives her coin purse a wary glance at the mention of 'wear something festive'. Like she'd know festive if it bit her on the butt!

Diplomacy(Gather Information on Bodriggan Wuthers): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21

Oh, this adventure is going to be a blast, I can see it now. Shardra has... 8gp to her name and she probably needs to buy an outfit worth 50g just to look like an out of place commoner. *laughs mightily*

Will update the stat block soon

"Pathfinders must often work under the cloak of secrecy, but it can make following up difficult. I'd never expect Bodriggan to fall out of touch. Frankly, I fear the worst. If he has met with foul play, I will want to know his fate. I trust you to deal with any opposition as you judge appropriate."

Your inquiries quickly reveal that Bodriggan Wuthers is a Pathfinder of some renown. Though he began as an orphan of unknown ancestry, found 20 years ago on the doorstep of the Pathfinder Lodge of Taldor’s capital, Oppara. He was raised in an orphanage, but the Taldan Pathfinders made it a point to look in on him from time to time, encouraging the boy’s curiosity and pushing him toward the life of the vagabond scholar. They got what they desired. When Wuthers turned 16, he left the orphanage behind and traveled to Absalom to join the Pathfinder Society. After a few years of training and following Venture-Captain Eliza Petulengro, Wuthers settled easily into his routine, traveling Avistan and Garund seeking greater glory for himself and the Society through treasure hunting. He quickly made a name for himself, battling through a host of demon-possessed apes in the Screaming Jungle at age 18 to recover the Garls Harp, an Azlanti musical instrument thought lost to time and memory. His tale of that find saw his first of many reports appear in the Pathfinder Chronicles and his fame as a Pathfinder was permanently sewn into the fabric of the Society by his many deeds.

In regards to your PC's dress: though the House of the Immortal Son has a reputation for opulence and excess, it never turns away anyone with any obvious amount of money or fame. Pathfinders are a source of great discussion in Taldor and the nobility love to read of their exploits and adventures. Everyone will attend the opera for free (regardless of how they’re dressed), but anyone wearing less than a courtier’s outfit and 50 gp or more of jewelry suffers a –2 penalty on all Charisma-based checks when dealing with any Taldan nobles throughout the scenario.

"Oh, I don't mind the wining and dining around Taldan nobles. In fact, they do tend to keep a looser tongue when imbibing of food and drink," spoke up the small wayang at the table. It was one of the few times when not in his practice that he was without hood over head, showing off his many tattoos and piercings. Rubbing a finger on his large nose, Qualif continued to speak, "I would assume that if Bodriggan has fallen out of touch, it would be quite beneficial that we collect what was to be his research papers? Also, before making our way to the grand opera, should we perhaps buy the appropriate accouterments? I would rather that I, and my assistant here, to look somewhat fashionable."

A masculine, yet feminine voice perks up from across the wayang, "You mean we get to go shopping again? And you'll actually buy me a dress of sorts?! Thank you sir!" Looking at the small creature across the table from her looked to be a large beast of a woman with a kind smile. Her current clothes were in tatters, but still held up decent enough to be in public, somewhat.

The shaman gives the eager-to-shop summoner companion a look with a bit of an upraised eyebrow before shrugging a bit. "That'd prob'ly be a good idea if we're going to be goin' t' the opera in Oppara--"

There's a momentary double-take as she realizes what she just said and shakes her head.

"Perhaps, Shardra, you could pose as a bodyguard for me. Then your less opulent armor would not appear as out of place to the Oppara snobbery. I will do my best to dress this armor up appropriately."

Maybe I should have gone the mithral armor route... Then I'd be nice and shiny.
When given a chance to resupply, Odo will track down something suitable to dress up while in armor. Courtier style + the 50 gp in bling.

Looking over to Odo, the young girl chuckles, "Then I can be the young orphan you are bringing to the opera. Might seem out of place...but it's not untrue! But..." the small Tien girl pulls out a stuffed bugbear and chuckles, [b]"Can we get Gom-Gom some finery?!? He needs it!" The girl nods quickly.

The Venture-Captain hands you a sketch of Wuthers to help you identify him, if he should be unable to identify himself when you find him.

"Yes, if we cannot locate Wuthers, any notes of his that you find will still be helpful. The opera is entitled, Among the Living, and you'll have the privilege to attend it's debut performance. I look forward to your review. Go, and report back to me directly upon your return to Absalom.”

Looks like we have everyone! As you finalize your purchases, please look upon that opera title with utmost irony.

Your newly acquainted team concludes the mission briefing and sets off to gather gear and meet up at the docks. Though Absalom is the largest city in the world, it rests upon the Isle of Kortos and all who journey to Taldor must sail the Inner Sea. The voyage is plagued by turbulent waters, but is otherwise uneventful. When you arrive at Westport, the sun setting to the west gleams red-gold off the gilded domes and glittering spires of Oppara's skyline. Passing through the Westport district requires navigating the narrow warrens of inns, bars, brothels, gambling houses, drug dens, and moneylenders, but that is true of most every port. It is nearly dark as you find your way to your lodgings and as the inky darkness begins to press in, you look up at the sudden appearance of bright points of light above your heads. They spread and grow, filling the purple sky like stars, but their light is closer. The gilded city shines at night as well, lit by thousands of lanterns strung between the white stone buildings and towers. The flawless, pristine architecture reflects their light, glowing as if lit from within.

Travel is tiring, so it is good you are given a night to rest and put yourselves back to rights. Some of you don new finery as you prepare to face a new kind of mission. A night at the opera. The city has been abuzz over tonight's new offering and the excitement is nearly palpable. Even the common people with no hope of procuring seats are enthusiastic, many of them gawking at the strange and interesting assortment of tourists. Some performing their minor arts for tips from eager and appreciative hedonists, others still hawking their wares.

Once a temple to Aroden, the House of the Immortal Son has, since his death, been Taldor’s most opulent and expensive opera house. It is a large, windowless, cylindrical building made of polished marble and granite and surrounded by thick, finely-carved pillars. Built in the earliest traditional styles of Aroden temples, the opera house lacks windows and its roof is a complicated piece of stone statuary that replicates the holy symbol of Aroden, a steady winged eye gazing forever toward the heavens.

Everything your eye meets as you enter the ten foot tall double doors that make up the grand entry of the House of the Immortal Son speaks of extravagance, both in structure and substance. Your toes sink deliciously into sumptuous carpets and every surface has been polished to a high shine. High above your heads a crystal chandelier sparkles, casting tiny little rays of prismatic light to dance across everyone and everything beneath it. And what a parade of interesting characters come to the opera in Oppara! The Taldan nobility dominates the crowd, many of them displaying a foppish dedication to the latest fashions that borders on the grotesque. One woman wears a wig that appears enchanted with a continuous revolution of prestidigitation as it fades into a new color about every minute or so. It seems pets must be allowed inside as well as an interesting looking gnome passes by, riding upon an ostrich with periwinkle plumage to locate his box seats.

You are subject to a fair amount of looks yourselves. Those of you who dressed for the occasion get little more than a passing glance, but those who could or would not conform draw looks of disdain from some as they look down their noses over their fancy opera glasses. But whenever an onlooker spies an exposed wayfinder, well they glance soon again, a bit more curiously. Pathfinders are apparently interesting, however they dress.

Your seats are on the ground floor and nearly as far from the stage as is possible, compliments of the Society. Filled with classic church pews now covered in the finest silks and cushions, the main room of the opera house is what you’d expect from a temple turned-theater. Much iconography dedicated to Aroden remains here in addition to the trappings of a dedicated theater. Soon the audience is all seated and the music swells, launching into the debut performance of Among the Living.

As the story plays out, you gather that it’s an epic tale of a lone Ulfen warrior named Victory who sails to the ends of Golarion, crashes off the edge of the world, and finds himself in a gothic paradise where he falls in love with the undead queen of a jungle kingdom. It’s melodramatic, over-acted, gaudy, and tasteless — just the sort of affair Taldor’s wealthy screams to attend. As yet another twirling dancer in a brown costume festooned with bright pink, flowing silk scarves spins across the jungle set at the front of the stage, the orchestra reaches a screeching crescendo that crashes the entire opera to a halt. The dancers stand quietly for a moment, breathing heavily and listening to the scattered applause across the obviously bored Taldan audience. Suddenly, a sound like a thousand gongs shakes the entire building to its very foundation and the audience murmurs in a mixture of delight and fear. The actors and orchestra, however, suddenly flee the stage, disappearing behind the curtains.

Hmm, that seems odd... (Performance Check DC 12):
As something of an artist yourself, you like to give performers the benefit of the doubt, but it would not take a virtuoso to determine that the music, vocals, and dancing of Among the Living is amateurish at best. Maybe something isn't right here...

Be sure to have all purchases finalized before posting your opera posts, no more purchasing past this point!

Qualif, enjoying being back on land made no qualms with rushing towards a place to stay. When at the inn, the small humanoid kept on insisting that he be given a room with a queen sized bed, not for him but rather his assistant. After an agreement was made, the summoner grinned from ear to ear as he made his way up towards his room.

About an hour later, the lawyer was at the opera, dressed in his new garments, with a new chain holding his pendant and a signet ring on his right pinky finger. He chatted with a few of the nobles, asking about any gossip going around in Oppera until the show started.

Shaken by the cacophony at the end of the event, Qualif stands from his seat and looks about, trying to gauge as to what was happening. It also troubled him slightly that the normal cast wasn't used, as it seemed to be full of amateurs......

Edit: Qualif will cast Mage Armor on Verna'th as she makes note about the play being unusual

Verna'th had enjoyed her travels with master off the island, but today more so than usual. He had bought her a dress that let her wings and tail move freely. Oh, and so pretty, the silky dress was black on top that slowly brightened to a colorful red at the bottom! It was the best job ever!

At the opera, she got many looks, with almost as many questions as to how she and master came together. While she tried to answer their questions, the eidolon was kept in check through the mental link between her and Qualif. Yes, she worked with many people, and even had a goblin to play with at her home, Verna'th felt intimidated by the amount of gluttony and showmanship of wealth at the event, and couldn't wait for the opera to start.

At the end of the show, she jumped slightly as her master stood with such haste. "That wasn't the main cast.... What do you think may have happened?" she asked, just loud enough for the other members of their group to hear.

Shardra had dropped a few silvers onto an eager young man who was wanting to brag about having shined the armor of a 'Real Pathfinder, HONEST!' and made her way along to Odo's side as bodyguard while keeping her senses and awareness sharp.

Yoon really has no concept of the show. To her it is great. The entire experience is amazing, having had little to no chance to experience much in the way of culture, the young girl is sincere in her excitement and awe. On the voyage, she did spend time cleaning her outfit and making sure to look as good as she possibly could, but there was only so much the young girl could do.

It should also be noted, that on the journey, she filled her Internal Buffer.

The terrible gonging seems to have been a signal as a few beats later, you hear the tell-tale sound of invaders crashing against the doors leading off from the main theater. Several of the patrons scream out in startled surprise and then look embarrassed, as if they have overreacted and this is surely just another dramatic device, meant to heighten the excitement. Others look about them unsure. The houses' lights are still lowered for the performance and as the crashing sound comes again, more cries of alarm erupt from your fellow opera-goers as instinct begins to override denial. Many around you are standing now, straining to see something reassuring in the gloom of the darkened theater. Some have decided their seats are no longer safe and leap up, knocking over pews in the process and rush for the open area of the aisles.

You will have two full rounds to prepare before the doors are breached and the light level needs to be addressed. Even though the other patrons are not represented on the map, you are in a panicky crowd, so all movement in here will be hampered and count for double (every 5 feet costs you 10) and you cannot take 5 foot steps. I have added a Current Encounter Map and you can find the link at the top of all pages and on your campaign tab. It is in slideshow format and on the first page, you'll find an opera house image to help visualize the grandeur and a dice block where I would like you to enter your character's name and initiative modifier. The encounter map is on the second page and it's big so you will likely want to use the zoom function to see.

Odo's hail serves to scatter a handful of people as they heed his advice and stay back from the door, but the group at large is too confused and panicked to even hear him.

Finally the door latch gives in under the assault and the doors burst inward, despite being designed to open from the other direction. Dead eyes stare blankly ahead from pallid faces as the enemy staggers into the grand theatre, dark blood still weeping from fresh wounds and staining their clothing. Their dress looks strangely familiar and it takes a moment before you realize these undead are wearing costumes much like those of the other actors in the opera. Heading the herd is a horned horror, it’s legs and torso ripped and torn. It grips a greataxe as it shambles forward followed by a dark-furred creature wielding a spiked morningstar, looking rather out of place among the others.

Odo may not be the most learned of religious scholars, but perhaps he knows something about the dead things that have burst into the auditorium.

But whether he knows specific knowledge about the foes in front of him, he does understand that they are a serious danger and must be dealt with. "For the Sun and Fury!" he cries out and his battle cry gives courage to his companions.

If nothing is available to do, Yoon will almost always Gather Power as a full round action. IF allowed to have done that instead of delay...here we go.

Yoon begins flourishing her hands and seemingly pulling flames from the very air around her, drawing them around herself, then upon seeing the large contingent charge in, she unleashes the gathered flames in an Eruption of Blue Flames.

Gather Power as a full round, followed by a move, reducing burn by 3, use internal buffer to prevent 1 point of burn from the blue flame, accepting the other. Using Substance-Burning Infusion and Form-Eruption. Eruption will create a 10' radius blast of blue flames (DC17 save for half) and anyone damaged by this must make a reflex save to prevent being caught on fire (DC18 or take 1d6 per round until extinguished). If not allowed to gather the previous round, then just drop the substance infusion. Blast marked on map with blue circle.

Odo:
These undead are definitely zombies, but they look rather recently deceased. They are resistant to bludgeoning and piercing damage as usual, and they are permanently staggered (only capable of one move or standard action per round). Your mind spins out possibilities as you look at the fresh wounds upon the creatures… they look inflicted by humanoid hands and teeth. A distressing theory occurs to you and you immediately wish for it not to be true. These zombies could be of a rare type that infects their victims with a disease that induces this state and causes them to rise from death, becoming zombies themselves!

Yoon's blast lights up the theater in an explosion of heat and has a devastating effect on the enemy, reducing three of the lesser zombies to smoldering heaps. Only one of them managed to shield itself partially, but with much of it's form blackened and aflame, does not look as if it will last long. The horned horror (Red) took the full brunt and is also aflame, but is still standing strong. The furred creature (Orange) has fared better than it's fellows as it is least scorched and not on fire.

Qualif and Verna'th and Shardra are up!

Qualif's spell explodes in a shower of glittering motes which serve to paint all of the zombies in sparkles, outlining the two remaining bodies. But neither is afflicted with blindness. Verna'th stabs with her spear, but beyond punching a small hole, the attack seems ineffectual.

Odo's slashes rend through the dead flesh, steadily paring through the large slab of meat before him.

Shardra sends out wave after wave of positive energy, and the undead are clearly weaker after each channel.

The horned monstrosity continues to burn, not possessing of enough awareness to even extinguish itself. It slashes at the stalwart halfling but it's greataxe is repelled by his ample armor. The furred creature moves up to engage Odo as well but it takes him the full round to do so.

Ok, made adjustments. Redirected Qualif's grease to Orange.

Yoon's blast of flame engulfs the horned horror, burning away the last vestiges of it's unlife. The creature collapses in a heap of burning flesh.

Qualif conjures grease beneath the furred zombie, causing it to slip down prone. As such, it is especially vulnerable to Odo's scimitar and he carves away more of the last remaining foe. Shardra adds insult to injury, afflicting the zombie with misfortune.

The thing scrambles to regain it's feet, opening itself to attack!
Odo and Shardra get an AOO, which may end the battle if they hit.

Out of combat! You can take a moment to discuss and regroup, although with no one taking damage, there isn't much to do than decide other than what to do now.

As you turn from your ruined opponents, you find the theater now deserted. It would seem these were not the only group of undead set upon the patrons. Bodies of several dozen dead lie scattered about the room and signs of carnage stretch out of every door in every direction. Screaming, moaning, and the sounds of combat can be heard from every corner of the opera house.

From somewhere nearby a voice cries out, “For Father Grim, for Fel Bustrani, consume them and multiply!”
