Crawl

Hello! As the interest check thread went well, let's get this started. I'll be looking for four to five players to play through a couple of modules in the Star Wars: Edge of the Empire game published by Fantasy Flight. It will be taking place here on the forums, using a conversion chart for die rolls. We'll be starting with Under a Black Sun as our intro adventure and going on to The Jewel of Yavin afterwards.

Character Creation
We'll be starting from scratch so go ahead and plan for new characters, with XP determined by your Species. Then throw in another 20XP for having been around a bit. There will be a pretty decent XP boost between the two modules, so don't worry if you can't get everything you want right away.

Allowed Species - Anything published is fair game. If you want to tweak established culture to fit your idea of the character, I'm probably fine with that. I'd definitely prefer that over "I picked a species I don't want because it has the best perks". If you want something not published officially (either in the Species Menagerie that's floating around, or otherwise), let me know and we'll see what we can do.

Allowed Books - All of the Edge of the Empire sourcebooks are available. If there's something you want from an Age of Rebellion book, let me know and we'll see if there's an EOTE equivalent, or if it otherwise can be adapted or would just slot in flawlessly. For Force and Destiny, please see the note on force users below.

Roles - Since you'll all be working together as a crew, and Careers are pretty broad, it might be a good idea to have a role in mind for what you actually do on the ship. You can generalise between a few things, or specialise hard in something. The selected players will be able to make tweaks before the game begins, so don't worry if there's slight overlap. It's also worth noting that each of these roles will definitely have their chance to shine.

  • Pilot (both Ground and Space)
  • Mechanic
  • Face (May or may not be Captain)
  • Computers Expert
  • Weapons Expert
  • Medic

Remember, you are all part of the same crew! Teamwork will be essential to not only your mission success, but also your very survival.

A Note on Force Users
I will at the absolute most be accepting one character who has a degree of Force Sensitivity. This can be either the Exile specialisation tree in the EOTE book or one of the Jedi careers in Force and Destiny.

As just an Exile who has things like Advanced Reflexes, and otherwise goes into other Careers, I'll want to know about an ancestor who was a Jedi/Sith, and how aware you are of your abilities.

As a full Force-User, I'll want to know about your own training, and why you're essentially a criminal now (instead of doing something like helping the Rebellion).

In both cases I'll want to know what you plan on taking for Force Powers, and how you plan to use them while remaining undetected.

I am asking more from the potential force-users than from others because you will have a harder time being a character. The Jedi are all but extinct and flaunting powers is bound to get you Empire attention, resulting in, you know, death. You will essentially not be able to use a lightsaber and will have to be cautious about when and how you use your abilities at all.

The further you plan to go into being a Force user, the higher the stakes and risks. Which makes sense: A smuggler who has some intuitions can be seen as "lucky", but someone who, you know, lifts a ship out of the swamp with their mind is on a different level, and people notice that kind of thing.

It is also not guaranteed that there will be a Force-user at all - there won’t be bias or preferential treatment for them if other characters are more interesting / better suited. So, get writing, Jedi!

What I'm looking for in a complete submission
- An image of your character, as near as you can get with the power of google-fu. (Just the species will do if you can't find anything that's exact to your vision).
- A few paragraphs about your character, with a particular focus on personality.
- At least a rough build. The absolutely minimum should be Species, Career, Specialisation, Obligation, and proposed party role.

Any questions, of course please ask.

Because of holidays, I'll plan for leaving this open for just over 2 weeks, and shoot for closing it on January 6th.

Yay!

As said in the interest thread, my plan is going for a Human Marauder with a tweak to the fluff of the career: instead of talents like Frenzy and Feral blah blah, it'll represnt things like focusing or other Kung-Fu things. No, nothing Force-related, just plain martial arts.

Also, with a bit more of xp, I'll be taking the Doctor talent tree (representing the study of medicine and anathomy of an internal martial art practicioner).

I'll work on a PC today or tomorrow.

Dotting

@Jereru, were you planning on aiming for the weapons expert role? Cause if not then I am looking at building a "mandolorian" bounty hunter with a jet pack focus, I don't have access to my books until January unfortunately so I can't really put together a submission until then.

Not really. He'll be a melee expert while having some medicine (starting GGY and better when he gets his secondary talent tree). I plan on him having a lot of "3" on his characteristics, to be a well rounded character, useful to the group.

The Exchange

Would you be terribly upset if I retooled my droid from our last Star Wars jaunt Yorick?

I want to mention real quick because it was asked in a PM, but I'm absolutely on board for people who want to play and are new to this system. It's one of the main reasons that I want to start with a more intro mission before going into a full heist with more experienced characters. I'm more than happy to give overviews on the system, explain rules, help with character creation, check math, or anything of the sort.

I also want to give a shoutout here to OggDude's character generator. It's Windows-only and doesn't contain any actual "copyright" text (which would circumvent book sales) but it's incredibly valuable for putting together a character.

PirateDevon wrote:

Quite the opposite! I miss that game and would love to see the further adventures of 5.

I will be offering up a Smuggler (Thief)/Computers Expert for consideration. Everything I use will be from the EOtE book - I only have that and the Age of Rebellion book.

Speaking of, how would you feel about my playing a Duros? I kind of have a Duros alias from a Saga game here on the boards, and it might be nice to reuse it.

Phntm888 wrote:

No qualms from me - Duros are pretty damn cool.

Awesome, might be a Technician (Slicer) instead of Smuggler (Thief). Pick up the Thief specialization after the first adventure if I get in.

Are you ok with force sensitive?

I'm dotting this too. I'm building a Gungan Hired Gun, probably a Heavy. Would fill the role of weapon's expert and possible secondary pilot/mechanic.

And here is Phntm888's submission, a Duros Slicer who owes a lot of money in gambling debts. His primary role is Computer Expert, and he would be able to serve as a backup Mechanic and Pilot, for both Planetary and Space. Stats are in the profile, as is a link to a reference image. It's a generic Duros, I couldn't find an image I liked tonight. I might try again tomorrow.

Nebten Nox, best damn star pilot in the game.

I mean, check out this mug (see portrait associated with handle)

Good looks, fast fingers and quick to the draw. Not that I need to resort to violence. That's what rapier wit and big friends are for. Of course, I would rather be flying. A man, his ship and nothing but the stars in between. Being a space jockey is the ultimate form of freedom within the new Galactic Empire. Sadly, freedom doesn't come free and there is always somebody trying to make a few credits off your head.

Nebten's Sheet

Smuggler (Scoundrel) filling the Pilot slot. Can be a backup Face. May dip into the Pilot or Thief occupations depending on the party's make up. Full background is written on the sheet.

Be warned, Music is Played Loud. Captain's Orders.

Seth here from the interest thread

Havnt updated the profile yet

Wookie merc soldier. Heavy weapons and leadership.

I.ll be interested as hell! I just got to read the books to see what I'm going to play. Only Edge of the Empire or can we use Age of the Rebellion to do a rebel agent who happens to see in the mission value for his cause?

I'll think on a character.

DM Forgedawn wrote:

I wrote an entire paragraph about Force users in the first post!

TheFluffyCrunch wrote:

You could have that as your backstory with an EOTE character for sure. But if there's a particular Career/Specialisation in Age of Rebellion that helps bring it together, I'm certainly open to it.

Heh, Zagulo is almost as good a pilot as Nebten.

Or...as good a pilot as Nebten if I look at the sheet linked in your post vs the sheet linked in your profile?

Which one is the final sheet?

Forgot to update the one on the profile last night. They should be the same now. Way to keep your head on a swivel there Zagulo. You'll make a fine co-pilot. ;)

Hello, this is Jereru. One question: do we start with the usual 500 creds?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm a Duros. I'm pretty sure that makes me at least the copilot on pretty much every ship I step on to.

Dotting for interest. Will post a character probably next week. How do you feel about either ewoks or jawas (main plan for now is to go jawa mechanic:ish)?

Hou Wong Xia wrote:

Let's go for another 250 on top of that, to a total of 750.

Patrik Ström wrote:

Jawa or Ewok would be fine. Though I don't imagine that Ewok's leave Endor much, as they are technologically... behind, so I'd want to hear about how/why you've left.

Also, that reminds me.

For the sake of simplicity, for characters who don't speak Basic (Wookie, Jawa, Ewok), let's say that you've worked out ways within your crew to understand each other. I'll assume at the very least that everyone understands Basic, even if they can't ordinarily speak it.

But as, say, a Rodian and Ewok pair. The Rodian would be able to communicate with his crew-mate Ewok, but not necessarily with other Ewoks. A Xenology check (with a boost die) may be enough for him to discern what's being said, but more than that would be pretty tough.

This should keep languages as a "complication" when it fits, allowing the natives to do translating or communicate among themselves, but also not create frustrations for you all when trying to talk amongst yourselves. And let's say you could spend, say, 5XP to actually learn a language from someone else, if you did want to be that Rodian who could speak Ewok. We could also throw in a simple translator item (if one doesn't already exist) in the case of something like a Wookiee who wants to be able to actually speak Basic.

Darn... cant get a bowcaster with 750. Sigh. Okay. Will work around it for now

Seth86 wrote:

Don't forget that you can take extra starting Obligation to get more XP or more Credits!

An extra 250 credits? Well, shoot. Now I gotta figure out what to buy with that.

Also, you should totally take on extra Obligation. I did for +10 XP! It's great. Since Yorick is choosing 4 or 5 people, it means we're guaranteed 10 base, so an extra 10 obligation only takes you to 20. It's not that much.

Of course, 5 players with 20 Obligation each...yeah, someone's obligation is triggering.

I'm good with using that for languages. Edge of the Empire doesn't seem to address it very well that I've noticed.

It's generally assumed in every star wars resource I've read that any species that can't *speak* basic because of their modality of speech, can still *comprehend* it, since it is literally the most common language in the galaxy by a wide margin.

Also, I was going to put my character up but my internet crashed for pretty much the entire state last night.

Here is Sunkon Faw, a gungan Heavy-Hired Gun.

I really need to install that character creator on my home desktop. I used my wife's laptop last night when I made the character, and didn't want to install it on hers.

Dotting :)

dotting for sure!

Hou Wong Xia finished, I think. If there's anything you feel I'm missing, please let me know.

Wookie Soldier

I buckled and went for credits

Droid Technician. Can fill mechanic role or pilot. I wrote the backstory but it got wiped. I'll rewrite it in the next couple of days.

Working on something - slowly but steady. I hope to have it ready next week. Unfortunately I think we will have competition for some of the roles but hey, it's healthy. :)

Indeed. That's why I made sure to list two backup roles. Versatility is valuable :)

Here's where we're at so far:

Submissions
Hou Wong Xia - Human Colonist (Doctor) - Martial Artist, Doctor
LE-IG - Droid Technician (Mechanic)
Nebten Nox - Human Smuggler (Scoundrel) - Pilot, Backup on Face
Sunkon Faw - Gungan Hired Gun (Heavy) - Weapons Expert
Tarkazza - Wookiee Hired Gun (Mercenary) - Weapons Expert, Leadership
Zagulo Maresh - Duros Technician (Slicer) - Computer Expert, Backup on Mechanics and Piloting

Ok, I forgot to put it on the alias, but... Hou Wong Xia is a Hired Gun (Marauder) :)

My mistake!

Annnd I'll probably be away for some of this weekend but I'll answer questions when I can.

So many hired guns! I might have to change my character up...

I have returned. I am sad though, where is my twi'lek friend?

I think based on our last builds and what happened in game I just need to drop Defensive slicing to be right by everything...

Sczarni

Yessssss, I love the Edge of the Empire system. I'll have a submission created real quick like. My home game, I play a Twi'lek mercenary leader. Basically a one-armed bandit lady. But in this adventure, I'm thinking of something a little different.

Sczarni

Muhax Tos, Cartharian Entrepreneur:

For the record, this -is- a silly idea.

For Cathar race

Species: Cathar
Career: Colonist
Specialization: Entrepreneur
Obligation:Family
Proposed Party Role: Stealthy, Rowdy Party Face.
My Google Fu, Muhax Tos's mug.

Muhax Tos is a traditionalist when it comes to trading. She doesn't prefer guns or fancy devices, but good old fashion face-to-face bartering. And if the deal sours, then her natural strength and agility see her able to rectify the wrong. If words can't be shared, then blood will be shed. Her new family motto.

But violence is her last resort, as she is trying to bring her family, and maybe her race, out of barbarism. She donned the clothes of a merchant, training her whole life (with talking to others and arithmetic) for the idea of a vessel landing on their planet. Eventually, her dream came true and opened up a whole new universe of space travel and other species. Her goal was simple; find a fine planet and secure enough money to pay for her family to move to it. The planet has to have lots of natural resources, good hunting, and a steady and possibly warmer climate than most planets.

And she is very noticeable, being one of the very very few Catharian space travelers. Most settle along the home planet, or wherever they were displaced to...or were enslaved by the Empire. Maybe, one day, she could buy her entire clan's freedom! Such honor would fall upon her, and the idea keeps her up at night, practicing speeches in the mirror.

Background
Obligation: Family, (+10) {Muhax Tos’s family are tribal people, mostly stuck on a planet far away from their homeland. Having only enough currency through bartering to send Muhax Tos away, they are poor, in need of a new, less swampy planet, and still have needs to be met. Muhax Tos sends them funds often to support them.}

Motivation: Quest-A New Home; Rescue her family, and eventually, her entire clan off of the swamp planet by buying their passage.

Thoughts:
I don't think it seems silly - but I'm also not sure the maths is right. I don't see the free rank in Athletics or Stealth, and I'm also not super sure how you afforded so many skill ranks, either, when 110 of your XP went to Attributes and Talents. It's possible that I missed something?

I thiiiink you all forgot to factor in the extra +20 XP from being slightly seasoned. We're starting with +20 XP and +250 Credits to reflect a bit of prior experience. Then there will be a big boost between modules.

Zagulo Maresh wrote:

Yeah, it basically says in a sidebar to "Ignore it unless it's a plot point", which is more-or-less the approach I'm taking. We certainly don't want to slow down play with it.

rungok wrote:

With skills being pretty important, and being able to take different specialisations later on, it's worth noting that backgrounds are the most important thing and characters can always evolve and change. I'd rather take two interesting Hired Guns than require the party to fit a specific mold.

XJ7-511 wrote:

If you get in, she may just have to make a cameo...

Will write a back story for Tarkazza in the morning. Its past midnight :P

Sczarni

Oh, well I'm fairly certain my math went through correctly, but just to make sure, I'll spell it out in this post.

I spent 100 exp into attributes. 20 into talents (not 10, so that's my typo). 10 exp into my second rank of Negotiation. That's with the additional 20 experience counted after the 100 was already spent; ie, I didn't increase my character's Intelligence with it. This total is 130 experience, which is exactly what it should be.

With my first career specialization, I gain 4 of the career skills for free. I chose Charm, Deception, Leadership, Streetwise. Those are all accounted for. My career is the Colonist, which I'm certain is in the Core book.

My specialization grants me two free skills. I chose Negotiation and Discipline. My specialization can be found in the Far Horizons book.

My free choice of Athletics and Stealth was made as well. I chose Stealth and Stealth is the second skill listed in the list. This is a racial skill bonus.

Now unless you're using a different method from standard character creation, I believe my skill ranks are fine. Though I don't know if you are. If you are, I can definitely change things.

I'll be working on two submissions, if that is acceptable? I'm thinking a colonist politico or some kind of explorer fringer. I'm leaning more towards the latter than the former.

Dotting

Not sure what yet, but will start working something out

Dotting for interest! I'd love to play some FF EotE!

I'll start working on a character :)

Gonna be working on a Human Colonist, Politico. A young man trying to stir up trouble for the Empire on the rim.

Sorry, Crayfish, that sounds right, my brain must have misfired with trying to process simple arithmetic.

WarforgedMan wrote:

In fairness to everyone submitting I think everyone should limit themselves to one submission.
