Welcome to the Wolves' Den Gameplay Thread. Things will start to move more quickly once I'm sure the map is behaving properly.

One by one, the locals say goodnight to whoever is paying attention and make their way out the door. The merchant heads up to bed, and the two hunters follow not long after. The hobgoblin and the innkeeper engage in a brief but heated discussion over the bill, that leaves both of them smiling as Vadzik heads upstairs with his pups. As the hour grows late and the common room empties out, one by one the staff exits through the kitchen. Finally, only Jonah, the innkeeper remains.

"Unfortunately," he says, stifling a yawn. "I've only one room left. The good news is, it's clean and fresh and got four beds, so everyone has a place to sleep. It comes to five silvers apiece for the bed and the food and drink."

Sjora hands the poor tired innkeeper her share of the room fee, after the place is emptied out, and looks to the others to see if they are coming as well. It's late and there's nothing really left to do here. One last time, she warms her hands by what remains of the fire in the hearth, then heads upstairs to claim a bed, taking her pack with her. She is more than glad to get out of her chain shirt and into a comfortable shift for sleeping.

"Well, isn't that convenient?" Duraelo pays the innkeeper, grabs his belongings, and heads up to the room. He changes into more comfortable sleeping clothes and flops down onto the bed. He takes out his book, inkpen, and inkwell, writing down several notes about everything that happened that day. When he finishes, he falls asleep almost instantly.

Human Fighter (archer) 3

"Very well." Etienne pays the innkeeper and heads upstairs. After making sure that Isabeau has everything she'll need for the night, he takes a corner bed farthest from the door and falls asleep.

"I have no problems with that." After his last drink of the evening, Rufon pays the innkeeper and goes to bed as last, taking the closest bed to the door with Thrace lying down next to him. If somebody would come through the door, he'd find a sleeping tiger waiting.

And you should never wake a sleeping tiger.

Rudimentary Map of 2nd floor added to Campaign Info. Try not to laugh too hard.

Duraelo: If you would be so kind as to edit your profile to include your AC, CMD, Saves, Init and Perception in the Gender, Class or Race lines, then I would be able to attack you more efficiently ... I mean, I'd have that info readily at my fingertips

One by one, you all go to bed and drift of to sleep.

Rolls:
Thrace Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22 He gets to roll early because of Scent
Rufon 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20 Gets an arbitrary +5 because he's used to the watch-tiger.
Sjora 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Etienne 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Duraelo 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

In the small hours of the night, the smell of smoke wakes the tiger. He emits a low, rumbling growl. Rufon wakes immediately on hearing the familiar sound, with Etienne and Duraelo lifting their heads at the noise. Sjora sleeps soundly.

Black smoke seeps through cracks in the floor and under the door, and you hear a roaring, as of a fire blazing somewhere. Is it hot in here?

Rufon, you and Thrace have two full rounds to act, followed by Etienne and Duraelo. Sjora remains asleep.

Rufon immediately gets out of his bed as he sees the black smoke creep under the door.
"Fire! Everyone grab your stuff and get out! Sjora! Wake up!"

As he packs his things, which isn't too much since he didn't unpack or whatever, he walks hastily to the door, feels the doorknob and listens for a moment. If he doesn't have an idea that the fire is right outside the door, he will open the door and look around.

Mechanics:
Move action to get out of bed and pack, free action to shout, move action to the door and open it.

Thrace however is alerted, but doesn't seem to want to approach the fire directly. Hesitant at first, he looks around the corner of the opened door. His first reaction is to get away from the fire and would probably go the shortest route possible to flee it.

Mechanics Thrace:
Double move action, he would indicate/lead the way, but won't abandon me so eagerly.

Do we have any information on how many rooms there are at the second floor and who sleeps there?

Can you open the map? If so, assume you know what is on the map, ie, who's in what room. If you can't, I'll figure something else out.

I got this message when I tried to access the map:

You are signed in as jafoquilt@gmail.com, but you don't have permission to access this item. You can request access from the owner or choose a different account.

I requested access, so you might get an email to that effect, but you might want to try to set it to 'open' or 'public access' if such an option is possible.

Is Sjora awake now after being yelled at, or have a chance of waking up again?

OK, I'll try something else. Yes, you're awake now, Sjora.

Sjora stumbles out of bed, glad she fell asleep in her clothes, what with being in a roomful of strange men she barely knew, nothing less would have been proper. She looks around trying to get her bearings as she blinks tiredly.

Human Fighter (archer) 3

I had to apply for map-viewing permission as well. At the moment, assuming there's a window near me, I'd open it to let out smoke/bring in fresh air/possibly jump out. By the way, did my hawk get a Perception roll?

Isabeau Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23

EDIT: Etienne is awakened by Isabeau's landing on his head and squawking. As he blinks the sleep out of his eyes, he hears Rufon's warning of a fire.

The bird didn't get a seperate roll, lacking the scent property and so not likely to get the scent early, but if you prefer, Isabeau woke at the sound of the tiger's growling and then woke you by landing on your head. The windows, such as they are, are too small for you to pass through. Isabeau could make it out.

The map SHOULD be readily available now. Sorry for the hassle. What follows may make little sense to you if you can't see it, but....

As you emerge into the hall.

Thick smoke pours down the corridor from the direction of the exit, obscuring vision, but you can see an orange glow of flame ahead, and a humanoid shape stumbling towards you out of the smoke.

Sjora stumbles to the door and looks down the hall... she immediately calls on her connection to the gods and creates 2 gallons of water centered on the orange glow, hoping to help put out the flames, or at least protect the human coming toward them.

"Huh? What's tha...what's going OH MY GODS FIRE!"

Duraelo quickly jumps out of bed, grabbing his clothes and belongings and running out with the others.

"What the hell is going on?" he yells. He sees Sjora douse the orange glow with water and decides to help out, casting Ray of Frost to ensure that the fire gets out.

Is there something I should roll to ensure that works, and if so, what? Or is it assumed to be a success, since I'm not targeting an enemy but rather a hot flame?

Sorry for the late post, everyone. Would have checked here sooner, but today was BRUTAL. Also, updated everything as you requested, Mr. DM. If I'm missing anything, please let me know.

Rufon steps outside the room, walking towards the figure, all the while knocking on the doors of the Hobgoblin and the guards, then kicking them in.
"Out! Everybody out! Fire!"

He takes a quick peek in the rooms he kicked the doors in of to make sure none are there.

Thrace will stay at the hall, ready to react to anyone who comes close; if he seems hostile attack, a friendly face/scent he will not react besides laying low on the ground.

Sjora runs back into the room and grabs her pack, slipping it on so her hands are free... She grumbles as she fumbles about a bit in the darkness, and then slips back out into the hall... She casts another 'create water' into the glow, hoping to help put out the flames.

Human Fighter (archer) 3

"Quickly my pretty, out the window. Meet me outside." Etienne tells Isabeau as she flies out the window. He then grabs his gear and exits the room. In the hallway, seeing Rufon kicking down doors, Etienne begins to do the same, working on the rooms on the other side of the corridor and heading towards the figure.

He'll get the hunters' room and then head for the staff section if the way isn't blocked by fire.

Round One:

Rufon gets up and goes to the door. Everyone else is yawning. Except Isabeau, who is pecking Etienne's ear.

Round Two:

Sjora stumbles into the hall, casting create water. The first casting goes up in steam, putting out a few spreading flames. It seems the spell does not create enough water to extinguish the flames where they have really caught hold, but perhaps to slow the spread?
Duraelo follows, casting Ray of Frost. This spell in too tightly targeted to have any real effect. It extinguishes a tiny area (a few square inches) of burning material, but the effect is reversed almost as quickly as it is seen.
Rufon pounds on doors. He hears growling and grumbling as the wolves and people wake up.

Round Three:

Sjora runs back into the room, grabs her pack, fumbles in the dark, goes back into the hall and casts a spell.
That's at least two, probably three move actions and a standard, but who knew we were in rounds anyway?
I had no idea you guys would respond so quickly, so it stands. In future, I'll try to be sure to alert you.

At this moment:

Rufon would be in front of the guards' door. (H-10)
Thrace at his heels
The rest would be outside your door. (C-10, C-11, D-10)
Isabeau is either out the window or sharing space with Etienne.

A few patches of flame extinguished by Sjora's spells were in the main corridor, but you see that the main source of the fire is in the narrow hall to the staff's quarters. (S-10, VWX-10)

The humanoid figure is a few feet away from Rufon, (J-11) and appears as a dessicated, partly decomposed corpse. As it lumbers towards you, you see low blue flames licking over its shoulder. The fact that it is on fire seems to have no effect on it. A second similar creature lumbers around the corner from the stairs. (P-10)

Smoke and Fire:
Quote:
A character who breathes heavy smoke must make a Fortitude save each round (DC 15, +1 per previous check) or spend that round choking and coughing. A character who chokes for 2 consecutive rounds takes 1d6 points of nonlethal damage. Smoke obscures vision, giving concealment (20% miss chance) to characters within it.
BUT
Quote:
Any character can hold her breath for a number of rounds equal to twice her Constitution score. If a character takes a standard or full-round action, the remaining duration that the character can hold her breath is reduced by 1 round. After this period of time, the character must make a DC 10 Constitution check every round in order to continue holding her breath. Each round, the DC increases by 1.

Assuming everyone is holding their breath at this moment.

Initiative:

Zombies 1d20 ⇒ 7
Rufon (and Thrace) 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Sjora 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Etienne (and Isabeau) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Duraelo 1d20 ⇒ 4
R 1d20 ⇒ 16
S 1d20 ⇒ 2

Initiative Order
Rufon
Sjora
Etienne
Zombies
Duraelo
Feel free to post out of order, IF you are fairly certain your actions will not be affected by the actions of those who go before you. If there is a relatively simple option (if Rufon kills zombie 1= move past it, if he doesn't= attack it) feel free to post both, but if I'll need a flow chart to figure out what you're going to do, just wait until it's your turn.

You were posting while I was typing. We are in rounds and there is a smoldering zombie between you and the door to the hunter's room. Sorry for the confusion, but let's reset you back to just outside the door to your room. Isabeau is safely outside, unless you wish to have her with you in light of the new circumstances.

yeah, Sjora's attempt to get her pack and get back to the hall, cast another spell is at least 2 rounds so we'll call it that her action this round is the moving back out and casting her spell again. Next round will be to try to hightail it out of there or help deal with zombies, whichever the party is going to do.... fight or flight?

Human Fighter (archer) 3

Yes, Isabeau's flying outside

On his turn, Etienne will fire an arrow at the nearest zombie.
Attack 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 +1 if within 30ft
Damage 1d6 ⇒ 3 +1 if within 30ft

Assuming I'm the guy on D10, it looks like I'll barely hit the J10 zombie and ... deal no damage! (stupid DR)
What's considered common knowledge about zombies (for those of us without Knowledge: Religion)?

Rufon seeing the scorched humanoid shambling about, takes a step closer to investigate.
What on earth is this? A man that doesn't screa..

Not even time to finish his own thought as he looks onto the (wo)man's face and sees the lifeless expression. He doesn't hesitate to attack the thing with his scimitar.

Mechanics:

five-foot step towards I-10, Attack the thing with my scimitar, default weapon for him at this level.
Attack Scimitar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Miss?, 20 or lower is miss: 1d100 ⇒ 42

Able to get a slight cut in the creature, trying to aim at it's neck. The smoke obscures his aim, though he manages to slice a wound across its chest. (assuming 4 damage isn't gonna take a zombie down yet)

Thrace growls at the sight of the walking dead, he can smell the unnatural stench upon them. After the low growl he pounces at the creature and try to rip it's neck off (if it still stands).

Mechanics Thrace:

Charge the abomination, +2 attack -2 AC till next turn, landing on I-11 after the charge.
Thrace's bite: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6
Bite Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Thrace loses his focus as he nears the thing, backing off before he even got close enough for a bite attempt.
Apparently startled at its sight, having never faced the undead before, he only growls slightly.

Holding Breath; Rufon 28-2=26 rounds left
Thrace 26-2=24 rounds left (As I see it, it says Con score, not modifier, hopefully this is correct)

I'm guessing I'll be at C-11. And I say we try and fight it out.

It can't just be a simple little journey, nooooooo, there has to be a fire and oh gods damn it all IS THAT A ZOMBIE? Duraelo thinks as he surveys the hallway, holding his breath to counteract the smoke.

Oh joy. One of the few enemies that NONE OF MY SPELLS WORK ON. Can't charm or put to sleep, no point in using Spark or Detect Magic, Touch of Fatigue...highly doubtful it would have an effect. Might as well keep using Frost

Duraelo makes sure his morningstar is with him, and tries to hit the nearest zombie with Ray of Frost. Zombie at J-11

Attack 1d20 ⇒ 13 I don't think I'm missing anything. If I am, please let me know
Damage 1d3 ⇒ 3

Round actions:
Free Actions: THought and checking that his morningstar is with him.

Should be, since that's only around 4min in real-time. I have to get back to work now, so it'll be a few hours before I'm back on.

Common knowledge about zombies: reanimated corpses, slow, tough. Anyone have Knowledge: Religion and want to know more?
Con SCORE, yes. Not modifier, which would be brutal.
For miss chance, let's say 01-20 misses, 21+ hits.
Feel free to roll them when you make your attack.

Etienne Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 80

Rufon slashes at the dead man and Etienne lodges an arrow in its heart, which unfortunately does not seem to affect it, though it does seem to look down, as if curious what made that sound.

With a groan that reveals embers burning inside its mouth, the dead man swipes at Rufon with his fingers curled into a claw. Attacking Rufon: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18Zombie Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 64
Catching the man a hard slam on the shoulder. Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

The other zombie shuffles along the corridor towards him. (arriving at L-10)

Duraelo Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 26

Duraelo flings a ray of frost at the second zombie, which seems to affect it more than expected. You'd have missed the first one (-4 for shooting into melee)

Round 2

AC 17, hp 5/14

Seeing his master and friend take a claw at his shoulder he roars loudly in defiance at the zombie in front of him, before tearing into him with tooth and claw.

Thrace Attacks:

Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 Miss?: 1d100 ⇒ 22
Claw 1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11 Miss?: 1d100 ⇒ 76
Claw 2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21 Miss?: 1d100 ⇒ 21

Claw 1 Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Claw 2 Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Thrace rips apart the zombie, tearing out his neck as he mauls at the things chest with his claws. (hopefully this kills him)

If this doesn't kill the zombie Rufon will attack him defensively. Else see the part belowDefensive Strike: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 3 - 4 = 17
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 Miss?: 1d100 ⇒ 9

Rufon feels the throbbing pain at his shoulder, blood seeping from under his armor onto the floor.
Blasted thing. What are the undead doing here in Gozrehs name?
Seeing Thrace rip apart the blasted undead, he steps up to protect his friend despite his wounds.

Mechanics:

Human Fighter (archer) 3

Odd, an arrow to the heart usually kills them. Maybe because they're already dead? Etienne nocks another arrow and fires at the remaining zombie (assuming the one on Rufon is re-dead. otherwise this shot's going for that one)

Arrow 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 +1 if attacking the closer zombie

That...that look like it hurt it. A LOT. Well, if fire doesn't hurt it... Duraelo moves forward and blasts the same zombie with another Ray of Frost.

Miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 95
Ray of Frost: 1d20 ⇒ 8 Since I'm not firing into out and out combat, but Sjora's in RANGED combat, I don't think the -4 applies. If it does...oh boy.
Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 1

Duraelo looks around, trying to see how everyone else is doing. He can see Rufon bleeding, even in the smoke, which instantly makes him think that maybe running might be a better idea. He also sees that Sjora has pulled a massive lucrene hammer out of nowhere. Note to self: if I survive, ask how where she got that.

Actions: Move forward to D-11, then shoot Ray of Frost.

Edit: He misses the zombie completely, the ray moving right past it and harmlessly hitting the wall behind it.

Thrace rips the first zombie apart with claws and teeth. As a raking claw opens the innards of the creature, it bursts into flames, spraying flaming gobs of flesh over the tiger and his master.
Thrace Reflex Save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Rufon Reflex Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Rufon and Thrace both manage to spring back, avoiding the worst of the fire, taking 3 hps apiece.

Sjora (I'm guessing) advances to J-11, bringing the second zombie into reach of her hammer. A heavy blow that would have killed a man seems to shatter the thing's arm, which hangs limp as it shuffles foreward, reaching for her with its free hand. Since the zombie can't 5' step, Sjora, you actually get an AoO on it, but will have to back off to attack it next turn.

Duraelo's ray and Etienne's arrow miss.

@ Duraelo: Sjora's attacking with a reach weapon, but it is a melee weapon. Thus, melee and the -4 to attack. Since an 8 would have missed anyway, you can't feel too robbed.

At this point, a hobgoblin in his underwear steps into the hall with a crossbow leveled to attack. A moment later, he vanishes back into the room.

Methinks that that AoO was a solid hit and a death...permadeath?...for the zombie.

"COME ON EVERYONE, MOVE MOVE MOVE! OUT OF THE GIANT FUNERAL PYRE!" Duraelo's had enough of this. He moves forward to behind Sjora, making sure that neiter she doesn't accidentally hit him with her weapon, or the zombie attacks him like it did with Rufon and his tiger. "Hurry it up, Sjora! Just bash its head in and let's get out of here!

Actions this round: Running up to square H-11. If I have to, I'll fire a Ray of Frost at the remaining zombie. Otherwise, I'm going to run as fast as I can out of there carrying all my belongings with me, and encouraging others to do the same.

Don't think it's dead yet, from my experience zombies have DR5/slashing. If I read the posts correctly he needs about 12 damage to go down. second zombie is only at 10 if I'm not mistaken.

Round 3 AC 17 hp 2/14
Rufon hastily removes the burning flesh and embers from his arms and face. Hurt pretty badly, and some of his long hair smoldering, he wished he had some healing potions with him.

Thrace whimpered a bit after the blast of burning flesh hit him, one of his paws covered his face, but the searing fleshy bits of the zombie singed his fur. Now some parts are blackened instead of striped.

Thrace moves next to Sjora at the silent nod of his master. He tries to rip out its throat, having witnessed the exploding innards of the last thing he killed.

Thrace's Bite:

Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Bite Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

That should kill him, sorry about the blast Sjora

Rufon himself goes over to his friend and pats him on the head after, worrying about the burns on his fur, not his own wounds.
He bashes in the door of the hunters if the way is clear now, standing at N-11

In this case, Rufon has it right. Those mighty blows from the lucerne hammer were severely weakened by the zombie's DR. Thrace gets the kill, and the after effect

The tiger opens the second zombie's belly in another eruption of fire.

Thrace Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Sjora Reflex: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3 Both saves made=1 pt of damage for Thrace and Sjora.

The flames spread quickly (R-10 also on fire) and the cook emerges, half dragging Caylin through the flames. Both are burned but alive, and the other guests appear at their doors, carrying what they can grab, hurrying towards the stairs.

Hmm. Guess my experiences were with a different type of creature that I'm misremembering as zombies. Never mind.

Duraelo shouts loudly "EVERYONE OUT! LET'S GO!" He rushes past everyone, making his way to the first floor via the stairs.

No, you're probably right, but Sjora's never fought zombies before so she didn't know lol... she just wanted a reach weapon since Thrace and Rufon were already in melee with the thing in a narrow corridor

Rufon was just lucky he has a scimitar as a default weapon. If there had been more time he would have used a Shillelagh club instead.

Rufon and Thrace race past doors that have been opened, trying to make sure everyone got out before they did. If they don't find/hear anyone, they will both make haste towards the first floor and exit.

Edit: I don't think any of those zombies looked familiar to us right?

Human Fighter (archer) 3

If the flames blocking the last couple staff rooms don't look too strong, Etienne will rush there to make sure everyone got out. Then he'll run downstairs after everyone else, exit the building, and call Isabeau.

There will definitely be some standard monsters in this adventure, but most of them will be tweaked. I find the sense of danger and uncertainty is increased (as is the value of knowledge skills) when players don't have the monster's statblocks at their fingertips.

No, wait. I mean, everything will be precisely as you expect it to be.

Trust me.

@ Rufon: Neither of the zombies seemed "fresh" enough to be anyone you've known. Recently, anyway.
@ Etienne: There are two squares of fire between you and the first doors, and a further three between you and the second pair. Think of each square as a 5 foot length of hallway where the floors and walls are ablaze. To move through each space will take a DC 15 reflex save to avoid catching yourself on fire. Yes, that is one save per square. Very dangerous.

Sjora runs for the stairs and sees Etienne's attempt at braving the flames to make sure the staff got out okay. She pauses at he top of the stairs and creates water, drenching him so he doesn't catch on fire himself as he braves the flames.

"Sorry about the water, Etienne, but that should help keep you from burning."

Human Fighter (archer) 3

@GM: Which doors have people come out of? I want to make sure as many people as possible get out.

@Etienne: At this point, the only people you haven't seen are Johan (the innkeeper) and Susanna.

@ All: Going to be a slow couple of days. Got a nasty bug.

Rufon would probably want to save as many people as well, though the flames are a bad idea in the condition he is in now. He'll escort the people to the 1st floor and outside of the building. Think he might actually be CN/leaning towards CG, instead of a straight CN character.
