Grey Island Ahoy

There is a lulling synchronization to the movement of the fungi.

Perception/Sense Motive DC 20:
There is a barely noticeable pulsing violet light emitting from an opening on the pillar (on the bay side of the island). The pulse matches the movement of the fungi.

Lacedon Catching

Sasha sits up from the flop that she fell into while Áine worked, her forehead furrows, No boat hooks on the ones we searched, but we passed three, four wrecks on the way here." She pushes herself to her feet, wiping grime from her cheek. She points down the steep hill, "There's one right there we could check."

Faith:
you know that the bite of a ghoul can actually transform someone into a ghoul.

GM note: you actually passed 5 wrecks on the way to the treasure pit and there are three wrecks at the base of the Hill that you guys are currently on.

Áine stares, squints, then points. "Looks like we should head to the pillar. The fungi moves to its beat."

Onward to Grey Island

While waiting on the tide, Faith takes a moment to chat with Sasha in a low voice.

Sasha or DC 15:
"Do you know anything about this Red Mantis captain that might be around, or did you hear rumor? I saw the bird-thing had one of those swords."

A brief pause, before "And I recognized that tattoo on your back."

Faith shrugs. "I like to know how big the hornets are before we stir up their nest."

He watches the fungus sway for a while. "That is disturbing," he decides.

Pit

"A boat hook is a good idea," Faith says. "Let's check the wrecks. We need to be careful, though. Being bitten by a ghoul will turn you into a ghoul. I am in favor of hauling it half-way up and having Áine powder it with holy arrows. I can provide the holy."

"Very against becoming a ghoul, thankyouverymuch." Áine says, "boat hooks it is...but, it is 40' down to the water." she shrugs, "Guess we'll figure out a way."

Zaine:
Sasha considers the question, "I don't know if I'd say sheltered." She smiles, "I have all the skills I need to survive, I know when people want to kill me and I know how to keep myself alive."

"It wasn't encouraged for me to leave the citadel, because someone might follow me back, but I did go to Ilizmagorti a few times a year. Enough to realize that I wasn't the same as most of the people my age."

She motions to the space between them, "I'm not good at dealing with people and when I get comfortable I talk about growing up and," she shrugs, "they get very weirded out."

She looks back down the cliff, watching the dinosaurs in their nest, "I really spent most of my time alone unless I was in lessons with my mother or someone she trusted." She looks at Zaine, "She didn't trust most of her people with me. I was too mouthy, too ready to question what should be."

Waiting for the Tide at Grey Island

Sasha looks at the group as Faith talks to her, biting a lower lip and thinking. When she responds, she doesn't make a effort to only be heard by the man of faith. "I never met her personally, but I saw reports about why she took to the seas. She's had a vision that a group would try to take out Bonefist and she needed to be there to stop them from usurping what little order there was in the Shackles. I think her crew were believers, but not in the Order."

She shakes her head, "I don't think she was shipwrecked here because of anything she was doing for the Red Mantis," a longer pause, "I don't think she's alive anymore." A very long pause, "Pezock had her sword, and she'd never give that up in life."

Looking at Zaine, then Faith, "The tattoo wasn't my choice, my mother had it done when I was ten. After... after I did something that made her happy."

In the hour you have to wait until the water recedes, you are able to spend time examining both the boat and the pillar with the spyglass. Although you see movement in the fungus trees near the ropes that lead to the pillar, you see what look like small humanoids on the deck of the ship.

Ship or pillar first?

Interlude in Treasure Hunting - Windwar

Ishirou looks at the now opened pit, "Maybe me and her," pointing to Sasha, "should stay here." He looks at Aine, "You said there are struts and risers, the undead could climb up and go rampaging across the island." He looks at Faith, "Those are the ones that only want to eat living flesh right?"

Unless there is an objection, Sasha agrees to stay behind, although she looks longingly at the water below before she takes up a guard position at the edge of the dug pit.

The climb/hike down to the wreck isn't too bad, although the more clumsy among you probably slip a few times on the clay soil. The once-boat, revealed to be the Windwar looks to only be a deck. You do see a number of metal head of boat hooks, but you also see skeletons tangled in the rigging.

Faith:
Technically it is just flesh. Ghouls will happily snack on corpses.

GM:
"Sounds rough," Zaine says. "Look, I don't know anyone who had a normal childhood. I expect the ones who do just stay home. It takes people like us to go out there and do... this. Whatever it is we do. Sit on ledges and watch giant flying predators, I guess."

Zaine laughs. "All right, I knew this one guy... he worked with the Electrum Horde. You know them? Mercenary outfit. They pay pretty good... don't like me much, but you know, join the club. Anyway, this guy, he wasn't a proper member... he was more like an independent contractor. Signed on with them when he could. Like me. He was a half-orc, and one time, this group of us get to drinking around a fire, and we start telling stories. Somehow it goes back to hometown stories, and it's not the usual, like how pretty your girl is back home, or how tough you were, or what used to eat the local sheep. No, we're talking about parents."

Zaine leans forward. He's not talking directly to Sasha, but rather to world beyond. "Right, so this guy, this half-orc, he's telling us all what a nightmare it is growing up with a human mom and an orc dad. So there's this one solstice celebration, and mom brings him home the one thing he's always wanted, right? A puppy. Cute little thing. He loves it more than anything. Then the dad gets home and chops the thing in half. The kid starts bawling, right? Who wouldn't. Then the dad goes... and get this..."

Zaine looks over to Sasha. "Why are you crying, son? I was gonna let you eat the bigger piece."

Windwar

Faith looks at the skeletons. "That's a strange place to die and not fall to pieces."

Zaine:
Sasha goes palm to forehead, "Poor kid." But Zaine sees a hint of sympathetic smile. "He must have had the topper of stories," a pause, her forehead furrowing a bit, "and the extra share of alchol that goes to the best worst story? That seemed to be the way it worked on the Jenivere."

A pause, "What was your story that night?" Sasha looks at her hands, "I've told you so much about how I grew up that I feel a little naked."

Waiting for the Low Tide

"Depends on if they've been hired to kill you." She shrugs, "There is some variation, but most are highly mission oriented. Running across them randomly they can be some of the nicest people you can met," a pause, "I've been told. They'd be more likely to have issue with me not any of you."

"Unless you get between them and a target, or are their target."

Silent Island

As soon as the tide allows it, the group is able to move across the causeway onto the bleak island. What looked like trees from further away prove to be gray stalks of fibrous fungus and the undergrowth is a combination of lichens and fungus forming a wiry tangle over the foul muddy surface of the island. The whole island is devoid of any sound other than the crash of waves against rocks, the fibrous growth seeming to have a dampening effect even on the ever present surf.

The fungal growth proves easier to move through that then more verdant jungle on the mainland so the group very quickly arrives a the ship they saw from the low-tide causeway. Although the ancient wreck looked to be in good conditions from further away, this close you see that the entire vessel is covered in a layer of soft gray mold. What looked like canvas sails prove to actually be sheets of the mold. As you examine the thick gray fungal ropes that span the 60-foot gap between the cliff and the ship, a small head pops up from hatch in the deck. It quickly drops back down.

A) K: nature DC 16:

Faith/Áine:
There are some similarities between the fungal growth that you see on the island and what you've heard growns in the Darklands. Except that none of the growth on this island have any mushroom caps, which is just weird.

GM:
"I probably told one about my first commanders. I was only twelve, and she was... I suppose the nice way to put it, completely b+#@&+! insane. But I don't think that's the story you want to hear."

He picks up the musket briefly, then lays it back down next to him. "This thing was hanging over the fireplace in the Kildare household for a number of years. My father had used it for hunting from time to time, and my grandfather had used it in some war or another. Don't ask me which. By the time I came around, it was in bad shape. Temperamental they say. It had to be loaded just right, and with paper, never cloth for wadding, or the damn thing wouldn't fire. We knew how to work it. No one else did. Anyway, I killed my first man with it when I was twelve."

He's staring out at the horizon. "He deserved it, as sure as any man ever deserves killing. Lord Octavio Horn, if you're wondering, and it's why I'm still not welcome in some parts of Varisia. I shot him through the heart, and I actually gave it some thought before I did it. The head would have been more sure, and he was wearing armor, but I figured, since he broke my heart when he killed my parents, well, I'd break his. One shot was all it took. Of course, then I was a skinny twelve year old kid running with this great damn half-broken old musket. I was pretty lucky that even his own guards kind of hated him, I suppose."

He smiles a bit. "There you go, you know that story now, and you should know that there's still a bounty on me for that crime. Still a couple bounties here and there, but that's one of them."

Silent Island

"No one is going to get this, but I feel like I'm on an entire island made out of Thorgrak's socks." Zaine pauses. "That would have killed if you were all with the Baseborn Legion."

Zaine:
Sasha puts a hand on Zaine's forearm, just a little touch in the here and now. Quietly, "Your first kill was a," she pauses, "not good, but," she taps her chest, "righteous?"

Her green eyes peek without her head turning, "Sounds like a bounty is a good badge to have where you came from." A gentle squeeze and she turns over to stare at the sky. "I don't know the name of the first person I killed. He was just a few years older than me, found his way to the Citadel through either sheer dumb luck or divine intervention. He was a true believer, but didn't want to serve until he had the skills to join the Red Mantis."

Her hands go up, and she traces one of the small scars, "I don't know to this day if Mother had some sympathy for him or just wanted to teach me something. She told him there was a girl in the citadel that wasn't skilled enough to be a Mantis, but if he killed her than he had passed the final test."

"He died. I didn't."

She smiles tightly, "It was the proudest I'd ever seen her," she looks at Zaine, red hair moving on the rock, "its when she had the tattoo put on me."

In addition to the boat hooks (one with a solid 10 ft wooden shaft) you find the captain had a collection of fancy knives from house various ports of call. The ten pieces are displayed proudly on the wall.

Bloody Doll

The next shipwreck proves to be the Bloody Doll which had survivors. The ship is striped of anything useful.

Brine Demon

A ninety-foot-long shipwreck leans against the cliff side and several jagged reefs here, encrusted with salt and moss. Its masts remain intact, but the sails have long since rotted away. At the bow, a leering demonic figurehead of green-caked brass provides an intimidating greeting.

K:history DC 15 or Wisdom DC 10:
The Brine Demon was a well known pirate ship captained by Avret Kinkarian, who also happened to be the subject of one of the many fireside stories Jask told to keep spirits up.

Áine uses the back of her hand to rub an itch on her nose beneath her bandana, then tries opening the book.

Áine uses the toe of her boot to sketch out a hatch she'd been standing next to. She knocks an arrow and takes a step to the side to make way for someone to open the portal while still having a shot through it.

With everyone's attention focused on the hatch that Áine pointed out (which reveals one surprised vegepygmie when Faith opens it), the garden gnomes give up on the sneaky plan to only steal one of you and another hatch bursts open, four of the plant creatures climbing out.

The largest (by all of two inches) has a beautifully made small longspear. Silently, he gestures at you, the interlopers, and his minions charge.

Combat actions please. The hatch is somewhere between 15 and 45 feet from you depending on how close you were to the captain's cabin.

Back up to the Treasure Pit

When you get back up to the top of the hill (and you did see a few trees that look strong enough to act as poles for the boat hooks whose staffs were broken), you see Sasha sitting at the edge of the dug hole, her rapier across her knees. Ishirou is looking in the gap, "I think that rock got it. But they are probably going to try again..."

Sasha grins, "How'd it go on your end? Ishi has seen at least two of the water ghouls."

Brine Demon

The Brine Demon proves to be in pretty bad shape, the hull half gone from where the ship was wedged amid the jagged rocks. Entering through the hole in the hull, it is clear that what booty had been kept there has been long lost to the sea. Carefully getting up on deck on old, waterlogged ladders, you see signs of old combat, covered up by the green algae similar to that on the nearby rocks. In the captain's cabin you find a skeleton slumped on the floor, its bony hands clutching a well-made, watertight darkwood coffer which had been hidden away in the secret compartment of the now-rotting desk.

It takes Áine a bit of time to work the corroded lock, but once she does you find six objects inside: a gold locket with an incredibly detailed painting of a red-headed half-elf inside, a dagger that glows slightly with blue magic, and several fat ledgers and journals.

Perception DC 12:
Beneath the portrait, a name has been lightly engraved into the gold 'Aeshamara'.

Áine:
Near the start of the group's third week on the Shiv, during her your watch at night, you feel like you are being watched. Even with your darkvision, you are unable to pick out an actual danger, but you end up with that creepy being watched tingle between your shoulder blades.
Faith:
Near the start of the group's third week on the Shiv, you have a dream of blood red eyes watching you from the jungle beyond the area cleared for your campsite.

You'd guess the figurehead of the Brine Demon is a representation of Mammon... which is odd because he is a devil not a demon.

Zaine:
Near the start of the third week on the Shiv, Tulip starts in the night, chirping at the darkness outside, but she quiets down after a moment, only shifting so that your smaller bulk 'protects' her.

Áine:
We're going to need a scene setting, but it's 3 weeks in, and the middle of the night and apparently Áine is staring at the cave entrance.
Zaine gets up, not especially quietly as he's not especially sneaky, and joins Áine at the opening to the cave, carrying his musket.

"What's going on?" he whispers. "Cannibals?"

Áine gets a shot off before the small creatures really get into their charge, her blunt arrow thunking into the skull of the creature who was about to climb onto the deck. Áine then moves so the open hatch is between her and the remaining 'gnomes'.

Tulip charges a garden gnome, trying to ripping into it with her teeth, but the agile little creature avoids the attack, instead looking to stab the dinosaur with its spear.

"Hey you," Zaine says to the biggest garden gnome. "You're dead." Zaine curses and shoots the bigger garden gnome. His shot is beautiful, blowing a large chunk out of the leader... but not quite enough.

The vegepygmies charge Faith and Sasha. Faith's armor again proves useful against the random violence of the Shiv, whereas Sasha takes a glancing blow from the spear. Having been waiting for the charge, Sasha slices into the plant-man with both rapier and kukri. The rapier doing no damage but the kukri almost cutting the gnome in two. "I really hate this rapier." she curses.

The vegepygmie engaged with Tulip tries to damage the dinosaur, but its efforts are fruitless.

Greviously wounded, the boss vegeman moves up to Zaine, the fury in his eyes not born out by the thrust of his spear.
