Lily takes only a moment to purse her lips as the halfling touches the circle. She lets out a small huff, as the green aura settles into her companion, and the apparent-tiefling doesn't explode... or get sent to a hell-dimension. Apparently, that could wait for the solution of the metal box.

She starts to say something, but then the bones move to fill the lines of the circle... causing her to pause once more, in thought. Once they reach the crossroads, as it were, she manages to gather her thoughts. "Maybe the circle needs a sacrifice to recharge..? And it accepts the bones of the dead as currency? Is that something that could be the case?" she asks, as she recharges the bolt she was using as a light source. "We should check to the left, first, to make sure there's nothing inside. If it really is a dead end, I'd feel safer with it being an empty one."

Boros eye the water speculatively, and notes Nissim also giving it more attention than the others do. Though he doesn't see any more of the suspicious ripples, he decides that prudence is better than silence, on the off chance that there is something in the water. "I think we'd all do well to be careful near that water," Boros warns, eyes sweeping the surface intently. "I'm pretty sure there's somethin' in it. No idea what, or if it's even a threat to us, but better safe than sorry." He does spare a quick moment to glance in the direction that Lily points out, however, and nods his agreement. "Seems a good idea to me. If Varuzhan'll lead, I'll cover the rear. Just in case," Boros says with a twitch of his head toward the calm water.

It's not paranoia if they really are out to get me...

Nissim notes Boros noting that he has noted the ripples on the water. With a frown he cocks an eyebrow at the gunman.

"Yes, it seems to be too disturbed for the stillness everywhere else. Everyone stay aware of how close you are to the water."

Backing as far from the water as he can, Aldous makes sure he remains surrounded by the others. Eyes on the water, the barrister is ready to conjure a blast of fire into being if anything makes itself known.

"Yeah! Let's see what more that hides down here!" Miranda concurred and put away the magnifying glass again, redrawing her dagger instead. "I'll make sure to note if I'll bring her out again, just for a heads up ..." She added with a grin.

At the tree-way fork

"Huh. Quiet." Miranda notes and looks around. On their three options, Lily was undoubtedly right; the dead-end would best to check out first. "The bones was just my magnifying glass being curious, I think. Sorry I should have warned *before* I did anything! Sorry!" She offered apologetically to Lily.

"Do you think there are swimming demons?" Miranda swept her gaze over the surface of the water, searching for whatever seems to have tipped Boros off. She wasn't really looking forward to being in underground water again - and now even less. "Let's not go near it anyhow then!" With that conclusion Miranda carefully moves closer to the dead end hallway, looking around to see if there was something left behind.

The lowest level 'swimming' demon I know of is the Hezrou, which is pretty much 100% guaranteed death for the entire party. It's one of those monsters whose CR jumps by like 3 if you're a level too low... because it just murders your face. :P

Properly templated animals can be called theoretically. Though yeah, actual real (as in paizo bestiary stuff) swimming demons would be bad :P

Just a quick update, stress at work took some toll on my health, been sleeping a lot and spending time with baby daughter who made her first steps(yay) - anyway, I'll elaborate as soon as I can(hopefully tomorrow) - I know weekends are slow.
The group, respectfully, stays away from the water, and enters the dead-end corridor. Near the end of the short hallway, to the southern end, there are scratchmarks on the stone wall. Plenty of them, covering an area a bit larger than a person.
Seeing that, Rexus speaks up:"Right...early on, halflings were hidden right down here. The chamber upstairs was a regular hidden storage room for... choice items, back then, and only converted later. If I'm right..."
He moves near the wall, then lets his flat hand glide over it, off to the side:"Yes, here seems to be an opening mechanism. If we DO want to open it. Those Scratch-Marks don't exactly look inviting, but then, they are out here..."
With that, he steps back again, towards the oposite wall, watching Boros bring up the rear-guard as the others move closer.

In the soundlessness of the underground tunnels, even normal talking feels loud, and the reverberation from reflection at the walls gives it an eerie sound.
All the more startling is a heavy splashing sound as something literally launches itself out of the water in a very flat arc, landing on the solid floor with a hearty thump.
There's just a moment where you manage to see it...it's white, it was scaly, lots of teeth...and tiny, glowing, hungry eyes.
One roll, reveal up to the best you got.

Knowledge Nature DC 8:
It's a really weird-looking crocodile. Those like to fight IN the water, and have a really nasty bite allowing them to grab on to victims and lock their jaw to keep them in a grapple of death.

Knowledge Nature DC 13:
It's actually not a crocodile, it's a lizard. They are equally capable on land and in water, and while their bite packs less of a punch, it IS poisonous for many kinds of lizards. Usually the toxin tries to limit the agility and thus, ability to flee. Something still seems weird about this one, but you can't put a finger on it.

Knowledge Nature DC 18:
It's not even a regular old Lizard. This thing is a Mwangi Bog Lizard. Must have been imported by someone rich. They developed a few special tricks to hunt successfully in their inhospitable and foul-smelling home. Chief among them are the ability to cause a fog-cloud like effect, and a blur-like effect it can use every couple rounds...attacking it in melee and missing due to this effect invites a vicious counterattack from the creature, taking advantage of the opening.

GM stuff:
Fun Stuff: 1d100 ⇒ 1 CD: 1d3 ⇒ 1

Things happen fast, and Aldous is first to react, slinging a magically created projectile of flame at it, after having decided, in a split-second decision, that it looks sufficiently "not friendly" to justify doing so.
He could have sworn he hit the creature, but the projectile seemed to...have passed through it?
As Nissim and Boros are ready to act themselves, having been slightly distracted by the Barrister's unusually vocal way of calling his magic into being, they find their intended course of action may need some revising.
That's because following a soundless roar from the creature ahead of you, the entire corridor is suddenly covered in a thick fog, making it hard to see even 5 feet.

Right now, you are still pretty certain where the creature is...but that may change, quickly. You can pin-point the spot it's at. Does not negate miss chance but allows ranged attacks. As always, high is good(regarding miss chances).

Would Faerie Fire have any effect on its ability to hide within the fog? Fog isn't listed as one of the things Faerie Fire beats the concealment of. :P

Hells Rebels Tactical Map

The problem with the fog is that it's not really the creature hiding, but the vision obstructed. As in, a Stone Giants foot and a Halfling are "equally" missable 5 feet away...I always considered it to mess with depth perception, as very dense fog tends to do. So even if you see "something", you can't quite be certain if it's within effective striking distance/too close/too far...so Faerie Fire or the likes would not defeat the Fog, no. that said, as Lily is one of the 2 characters trained in Knowledge Nature, I do encourage you to try and learn more.

Single action? Hmm. That rules out a charge. 5-foot step and melee attack is also not happening--stupid lizard and it's refusal to cooperate in its own death--and that leaves few other choices, none good.

Getting a glimpse of the rather unwholesome-looking creature as it appears with an admittedly impressive leap onto dry ground, Boros is about to make it regret its appearance when everything around him disappears behind an unexpected wall of fog. While vision might be impaired, hearing isn't and Boros can quite clearly make out what his companions think of this development. Their opinion is a match for his own, expressing through a few biting epithets in Gnoll as he quickly mulls over his options. Clearly the creature is responsible for this fog, and it wouldn't have used it if its own efforts would be hampered by the lack of clear sight. Following that thought to its logical conclusion, Boros realizea that he has to keep it out of the fog--draw it further away, if possible--while his allies get clear. He takes a moment to mutter a quick prayer to his patron, Torag, then races out of the cloud with a yell to get the beast's attention fixed on him while doing his best to avoid its snapping jaws. Even as he moves, his pistol is out and ready for use, though it'll take a few precious moments to get a good shot lined up.

Taking a move action to move one square diagonally up-left, then two squares left. Movement is at half-speed due to making an Acrobatics check to avoid an attack of opportunity from moving through a threatened square in the process. And drawing the pistol as a free action during the move as well.

@Boros...lucky you. I double-checked on your skills to make certain ACP was in fact already deducted.
@general: I prefer to see how many ranks you put into a skill. I can do the remainder of the math easily myself, or wonder/ask about where a bonus comes from. but especially for things like armor check penalty-skills, on a first glance it's not clear if its 1 rank + class + attribute, or 2 ranks + class + attribute - ACP; know what I mean? So if you did not do so before, I'd much appreciate if you could mark the number of ranks somehow(possible in paranthesis next to the total).

The creature takes note at Boros passing by it, but does not see a good enough opening to justify snapping at him.
Moments after, an alchemical bomb comes flying at it, exploding near it's feet but failing to score a direct hit. On the plus side, this attack did seem to connect, unlike a reverberating blast of flame coloring the fog into the color of a summer sunrise, which is aimed well, but slightly too high, sailing past the creature before fracturing and rapidly dissipating in mid-air.
Moments later, Varuzhan comes to a halt next to the scaly beast, presenting it with 2 tasty treats...
1-Boros 2-Varuzhan: 1d2 ⇒ 2
And when presented with 2 different options, the curious creature decides to try the meal it is unfamiliar with, snapping at the Strix.
It's teeth manage to find Varuzhan, and the creature seems unwilling to let go, holding it's mouth shut with Varuzhan partially in it.
Almost as an afterthought, it's thorny, scaly, well-armored and quite massive tail lashes out at Boros, slamming into his side like a sledgehammer.

Varuzhan:
You did not do your Knowledge-Nature Check yet. Considering it's head is latched on to you, you can see more clearly despite still being in the fog. Specifically, you see that the thing has no eyes. That gives you a +4 circumstance bonus on your knowledge roll.

Nissim figures that if the last bomb worked at all, they're the best option he has going. You fool, assuming humanoids would be your only problem, nothing else prepared for other possibilities.

As he pulls another bomb from his bandolier, he yells to Varuzhan "hold on! I will try to surprise it into letting go!"

He steps forward and throws the bomb toward the rear of the creature, as if it were an attack from behind. He makes sure to angle the projectile so it will not blow onto any of his friends gathered around the beast.

Hells Rebels Tactical Map

@Nissim: The fog obscures all sight, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. A creature within 5 feet has concealment (attacks have a 20% miss chance). Creatures farther away have total concealment (50% miss chance, and the attacker can’t use sight to locate the target). - I wonder how you intend to specifically exclude squares you don't know are occupied? Plus even with a splash weapon, if you intend a direct hit(you did happen to guess an occupied square...but then, it did not move and Varuzhan grunting as the air was pressed from his lungs may have given a hint) you will need to take the 50% miss chance into consideration. You hit the square, but do you hit the Reptile?

@Varuzhan: The knowledge check tiers were further up on the page, here specifically. You learned more than just about a lack of eyes. Just making sure you did not miss it.

With all the chaos surrounding the beast's arrival and attack, Boros' usual level of skill at arms deserts him utterly, and the stab he aims at its side comes nowhere near the mark. And Boros knows full well that his attack didn't miss because of whatever weird thing the creature is doing to mask its true position. "Torag's hairy, swingin' sack," he curses as he takes a few cautious steps back with a disgusted glare aimed at his blade. "This is enough o' a mess without me addin' to it with such pathetic displays," Boros mutters angrily, more to himself than anyone else.

Thank you - I completely missed the knowledge check!

It suddenly dawns on Varuzhan what this really was. He tries to explain through his pain. "This is no crocodile--ack-- it's a Mwangi Bog Lizard! If you miss an attack due to its--argh--blur effect, it will counterattack!"

@Mordred: Uh, okay. I guess Nissm will just spend his turn moving out of the mist. If he can move out of the mist since he doesn't know where the borders are?

Hells Rebels Tactical Map

@Nissim...no need to. As said, since the creature has not really moved, it's fine if you simply throw at it's space again. With a passive Perception result of 18 on Take 10 you can about estimate the distance of Boros's cursing, Varuzhans pained explanation, and Miranda's surprised shriek when she is bitten in retaliation. The difference between direct hit or miss(50% for not seeing it at all) is a mere 2 damage, but things need to be proper. The only thing you cannot do is exlude spaces as per precise bomb, not able to pinpoint exact spaces for that. But since you throw to the far end and your roll hit the square, there's no misfire/friendly fire. Even with Splash Damage, you are currently the most consistent damage dealer, it seems - so double-moving out and provoking is certainly an option, but your original plan was mostly fine except for a few details.

@Boros...for a trained soldier, your combat performance is rather questionable, yep ;) I don't think you've ever been lucky in any of your attack rolls.

Just as clarification on the retaliation(i did not word it clear enough in the spoiler): It only retaliates while the blur is in effect, yes, but it does not care about the origin of the miss chance. So you don't have to worry about mist vs blur. If your attack WOULD hit, but misses because of miss chance, AND blur is in effect on that round, then it counters.

Unable to cause any hurt to the creature, Aldous runs forward and grabs Varuzhan thinking of the great works of medicine as he does so; ilicit texts of anatomy, tomes on the healing power of the gods, even those works on herbalism that Aldous, then a bored student, had thumbed through on long nights in the university library while giving his brain a rest on contract law...

They all had different approaches to the same problem: the frailty of the mortal vessel. Aldous intended to change that.

The smell of herbs, bubbling away in a cauldron, emanates from the mist, as Varuzhan's wounds close.

Rexus moves into melee range with the strange creature as well, after realizing the team had decided to fight it blindly(not knowing how far the fog reaches):"Lets see if I can tip the scales!", he exclaims, the stab of his Rapier almost as bad as the pun.
Rapier Stab: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

As the beast begins to retreat, it's continued hold on Varuzhan's struggling form makes its intentions clear, and Boros curses loudly as he moves to prevent that from happening. As he moves forward, the creature's form suddenly becomes distinct and clearly visible, that odd wavering apparently removed or suppressed somehow. Once he reaches the optimum distance for his pistol, he takes careful aim at the beast's heaving form, exhales, and pulls the trigger.

Move action to move three squares diagonally down-left, then a standard action to take a shot at Mr. Lizard. The big bastard is inside the pistol's first range increment, so the attack will be against touch AC. Ordinarily, there's a -4 penalty for firing into melee, but Mr. Lizard is a nice, big target, and the rules state that firing at a part of a target 10 or more feet away from an ally engaged in melee with the target ignores the penalty. So Boros is putting that shot into the bottom-left square of Mr. Lizard's token, which should be far enough from Varuzhan. Finally, spending 1 grit to use Up Close and Deadly for an extra bit of precision damage. If the shot misses, Mr. Lizard still gets brushed for half of the extra damage anyway.

What became of the bomb I threw, I think it was last round?

Hells Rebels Tactical Map

@Nissim: The bomb still had a 50% miss chance due to total concealment...meaning you hit the square, but not necessarily the creature. As such, the splash damage(5 points) was already added(for 10 total, together with the splash from the first bomb), as thats certain damage. The "direct hit" damage would be 2 higher, and is listed as (-2?) because I have no miss percantage roll to go by. I would have rolled it for you IF those 2 points end up making a difference and you did not do that, so far.

Both Boros and Aldous manage to hit their target this time. The creature seems startled at the loud noise of both the Gun, and the reverberating effect of the Untethering.

If I'm reading Mordred correctly: You got the lizard with the splash damage from your two bombs. But you never bothered to roll against the fog's concealment chance to see if the second bomb was a direct hit--which would add direct hit damage--or just landed in the lizard's space for splash damage only.

Fort vs Poison: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7.

Varuzhan finds his movements becoming even more sluggish with poison. Deciding that offense was better than defense, he drops his quarterstaff, draws his sickle and attempts to slice at the lizard.

When he hears the lizard and Varuzhan moving away, he follows in their general direction. Once he's clear of the mist he continues farther, over beside Aldous, to get a clear line of sight on the beast.

With a mumbled prayer she threw the dagger into the mist, hoping to at least scratch the beast!

Oh jeez. I had time to update yesterday, but did not, waiting for the last bold name to post, individually. Damn you, Rexus.

With a sudden barrage of attacks and strikes, bullets, magic, bombs, and mundane attacks both in melee and with thrown weaponry, the Lizard is simply overwhelmed by the intensity of the onslaught.
Not quite willing to let go of it's prey, it simply slumps to the ground, slowly rolling to it's side. Varuzhan was pulled down with it, but quickly manages to escape the jaws of the beast.
While the creature is seriously wounded, it seems to be stable, and is breathing slowly with is mouth open. With it's form no longer blurry, no fog, and it staying stationary, you realize that the Lizard looks rather starved. Moments later, Lily, who stayed back, notes that the Fog is clearing up, slowly but steadily.
No miss chance, nope, plus the previous bomb was a direct hit. Thats 10(+2) more lethal from Nissim+Miranda, and 7 nonlethal from V - you guys got a really lucky round, there.

Round 3 - End combat.
