perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Drovya shudders, grimaces, and looks almost sick until Kanthuun takes out the Protean eye. Thank the gods, that thing was horrific. What do you think all of these books are for? Are any of them within reach? Also auto succeed the Spellcraft/Knowledge Arcana DC.
When he scans the environs with his mage sight, Drovya almost falls over. There's just too much going on in here. It's a maelstrom of magical energy. But Kanthya is right, it will boost air and shock spells significantly. Didn't Gant say that the mistress of this place liked to fling lightning bolts about? It might be near time for that protection spell of yours, Rohini. At least, once we get to the top.
He then grins at Haka. Enjoy the climb, I'll see you at the top, he adds with a wink.
Maybe Rohini put a guidance on Haka before he thought about historical stuff?

Haka Thunderfoot |

Could have done in a retcon kind of way, or could have done in an only-if-she-or-he-or-somebody-thought-of-it kind of way? Don't want to do any unauthorized spoiler peeking.

Rohini Soni |

definitely makes sense that Rohini would have given guidance. The resist energy lasts 10 min, but Rohini needs to touch you all, which would be difficult in a combat situation. So if you agree I think she probably should do it now but we should remember we are on the clock. We should also consider other buffs -- communal protection from evil (7 minutes). She can also cast shield of faith twice (7 minutes) -- does that stack with the ring of protection bonuses? Rohini is also thinking of flying at this point (7 minutes). She can also cast align weapon and abundant ammunition to get an endless supply of silver and good bolts. She also can align someone else's weapon too. 7 minutes. The question is whether to do all the buffs NOW.

Haka Thunderfoot |

As Haka looks up the long, spiraling flight of stairs, he finds himself quietly humming along to the music of the flute, then anticipating its melody slightly, and realizes he knows the piece, and its history.
He turns to his friends and says ”I don’t see how knowing this can help us, but I remember the tale behind this song, and it is a sad one. The song was composed by a man named Pelynn Obleyth – a wizard with a fairly magical musical ear. He had a granddaughter – one of several, but she was the youngest, and very dear to him, though the tale when I heard it never mentioned her name. She was kidnapped and, in the end, murdered awfully. Obleyth wouldn’t believe it, wouldn’t acknowledge that she was dead, said she was just wandering, lost and alone, trying to find her way home.”
”The story goes that the little girl was afraid of storms, more so than other things, and more than most little girls are. On stormy nights, Obleyth would stand on the balcony of his tower, wind and rain whipping around him and thunder shaking the heavens. He would call his beloved granddaughter’s name, and play the flute, play this very song, to try to guide her home. This went on for quite some time, and the girl never did make her way back to him. But folks heard the haunting song, and it carried on, even after his death. And that’s the truly odd and sad part of the tale, is he was found murdered also, though I never did hear how he was supposed to have been killed.”
Haka pauses with his head down, then adds, ”Well, nothing brightens a creepy library full of hands and eyes like a macabre tale of dead children and haunting tunes. Any ideas on whether it means anything here? Could that be Pelynn Obleyth up there, a dead wizard playing for us, or for his lost little girl?”

Talon Skyfall |

The prot evil bonuses won't stack but the bonus is higher so it will just override any rings of protection. Just hold off on minute/level spells until we know what we're dealing with.
"Why don't we just go and find out?" Talon shrugs.

Drovya Gregorovitch |

Maybe Uraffa is the soul of the wizard's granddaughter?
Are we assuming that Kanthuun used the Scholar's Ring to read the gnome's journal? There might be some good info in there.
Drovya looks up at the pillars, frowning slightly.
That's one long climb. Let's take stock of how we're going to get up there. I have a flight spell prepared. Rohini might too as well as Kanthuun, although I don't know if he has enough for all of us. Does anyone have a magical rope, or something of the sort? Or another means of getting to the top? It would be better to fight them on the floor, less chance of taking a nasty fall, although we can't have everything, now can we.
He continues to ponder, playing out scenarios in his head.
Disguising our intentions might work, but if this is Uraffa's seat, I say we strike quickly, not give her the chance to prepare, or know how many of us there are.
Flight spells should last nine minutes (air descriptor gets the +2 caster level bump). Maybe invisible, flying Talon bull-rushes Uraffa off the pillar to soften her up with a fall?

Talon Skyfall |

Well I have a feeling she can fly, but I'll find a way to soften her up. I forgot we had the wands, actually...
"I'm good with that plan."

Hanethes Starsprings |

You asked us that once before, Trout... and in all honesty, I'm not sure if we have been or not. It seems like its a smart and reasonable thing to do, generally speaking, so we could assume that we were. Or, since we forgot about them as players, you could say we forgot about them as characters. At least in the past day or so.
"I can jump up the stairs easily enough. Movement isn't that big a problem for me."

Haka Thunderfoot |

"Perhaps I can give Talon a bit of an advantage before he attempts to push our musician off the stage - they do tend to resist that."
As Haka speaks, he takes out his wand of Longstrider and casts it on himself.
Can start with Heroism on Talon - fitting for our hero - lasts 10 min/level and gives +2 to attacks, saves and skills. When we're more sure this is our big baddy, Good Hope lasts 1 min/level but can affect us all and gives +2 to saves, attack & damage, ability checks, and skills.

Rohini Soni |

my only concern is Rohini trying to touch all6 of us in a combat situation. How long would that take? 3 rounds at best for just the resist energy, assuming she doesn't have to move to get close to people? It seems like we need a buch of rounds to get properly buffed. We could send an invisible flying recon person, but if they get seen and drawn into combat it means once again no time for buffing...

Talon Skyfall |

"I love having the advantage, makes thing so much easier."
Don't worry about getting all of us then. You have shield other on me and I just got a heroism. Worry about the others first. And we need to be sure there is an imminent threat before we start throwing spells left and right.
Oh and I got called a hero!

Drovya Gregorovitch |

"I love having the advantage, makes thing so much easier."
In that case, let's scout out what's happening at the top. Better to do the surprising than to be the ones surprised. Hanethes, will you do the honors? Perhaps with a bit of assistance from Kanthuun.
You can use a touch spell on up to six allies as part of a full round action, so Rohini should be able to get all of us with the resist energy in pretty short order. Let's check and see if the stairs are trapped, Hanethes scouts it out stealthily, then we attack. Also, I'll try to remember to post about using the wand of undetectable alignment in the future, since it lasts 24 hours per charge and all. Also, I really need to work on my reading comprehension. I totally missed that there were stairs going up to the top. I thought it was just pillars.

Rohini Soni |

"I feel that our main quarry is close by. I don't want us to venture forth before receiving my lady's protection from lightning and evil. Once we move I will not be able to offer her protection to all. We have done well in recent combats, but remember it was not so long ago that we lost two of our allies. We must be cautious."

Talon Skyfall |

"Alright. I'll wait, do your thing."

Haka Thunderfoot |

"I think you're right, Rohini. I get the sense something nasty is up there, and I'm for all the protection we can manage, given your history here."
Haka then lays a small hand on Talon's wrist and chants a few strange words, and a brief glow envelops his hand and passes from him to Talon. Cast Heroism, duration 70 minutes
"I can cast that on at least one other of us before we get started. Drovya, Han, or myself seem to make sense, as it helps with striking with weapons and resisting ill affects."
Can cast a total of 3 more, but want to save at least one 2nd level slot for Gallant Inspiration, in case someone blows a key save.

Rohini Soni |

Ok, I hope it's the right judgment call. Let me know if someone disagrees. Otherwise, once we have our plans worked out, Rohini will guide the group back a little bit and unload the buffing.
Rohini will gather in the middle with everyone circled around. She will raise her symbol, close her eyes and incant a prayer, casting communal resist energy (lightning) and communal protection from evil.
Ten minutes of resist energy to each, and 20 minutes to Talon (since Rohini is his shield). Seven minutes of protection from evil to each. Does the save bonus stack with heroism? She'll give 14 minutes of protection from evil to Drovya. Rohini will hold back on shield of faith, since it is only an extra +1 to AC in addition to protection from evil. When we're ready to go Rohini will cast fly on herself.
Should Rohini align someone's weapon? Rohini has some scrolls -- it only lasts two minutes. Could Black Ivan even stand being aligned? Does our quarry have DR versus nonaligned weapons? Knowledge (planes):1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12 If folks are reasonably grouped together, Rohini will cast blessing of fervor once we are in combat with our main foe.
"There. I feel we are much better prepared to face our main foe. But remember that my Lady's blessings won't last all day. If we don't find our foe in this nightmarish chamber, we must move quickly to find her."

Kanthuun |

Sorry, I was entangled in shamrocks all weekend. We should have been casting our obscure-alignment every day; it was in our dwarven paladin's possession, wasn't it? Haka or Rohini can cast it. Er, have been casting it.
Kanthuun hands Hanethes a potion. "A spot of invisibility for you, good sir? It keeps me from using up another spell today."
"I have some other useful potions," he says, rummaging around in his quiver. "Barkskin, Ablative Barrier, hmm...earplugs, why did I pack so many...scroll, scroll...anyhow, Barkskin, anyone?"

Hanethes Starsprings |

Hanethes leans back and waits for the others to decide what to do. Not having much magic at his disposal means that he doesn't feel like he relies on it that much. "What do you suggest for me? I can take the stairs easily enough."

Talon Skyfall |

"Yea, stay safe Han."

The Elusive Trout |

1d20 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22
Urrafa (true seeing)
The party made their way into the chamber and towards the middle staircase. Despite a sense of foreboding, they ascended en masse, with the two yamah trailing a short way behind. The music continued, and while a drum accompaniment from Haka may have made it more palatable after the fourth round, the footsteps of the group more than made up for a lack of percussion.
30 feet in the air, the party made their exchanges of magic and wished their scout luck. Hanethes made it up the rest of the way effortlessly, relatively confident that no hidden traps would hinder his allies, despite an unnoticed, sinister protrusion concealed within the central pillar almost directly at the the top of the spire.
Hanethes encountered the flute-player once he rounded the final portion of the stairway onto the platform. She was small, hardly three-and-a-half feet tall, her head proportioned on her body like a child, like most of the vulnadaemons encountered up to this point. However, her eyes were open and strangely alive, calculating and bestial. Catlike, they glinted with the red lightning streaks originating from a sizeable orb centered in the ceiling above. She gave off an aura of authority and eminent danger, staring in Hanethes direction. However, she gave no sign of seeing the roguish mist.
Not an arm's reach away stood a familiar figure, though it was now encountered lopsided, its head barely connected to its mangled, stitched body split down the middle. Its tongue lolled out of its beak, speaking further to the suspiri's undead state. Still, it swayed to the music, blackening tongue twitching perversely.
Another suspiridaemon squatted silently next to its master, cocking its head to peer at the musician after several seconds had past. It stood up, allowing Hanethes to see the monstrosity was wearing footwraps.
It used its tongue to reach into its feathers, smearing it in some form of a foaming yellow substance. It then moved directly next to the spot where Hanethes lingered and proceeded to step off the edge, away from the stairwell. Surprisingly, the creature didn't fall, but merely clung to the pillar's edge with its feet, coiling its tongue in wait and sitting absolutely still.
Having watched it stealth, Hanethes knows where it is.
So, in summation, there is a 25' 25' platform, with miss flutey in the middle, a reanimated vulna, and another suspiridaemon hanging out next to the final bend.
Melee touch attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16 If it hits, take 1d3 ⇒ 3 damage and make a DC 17 Fort save or be staggered and take 1d3 ⇒ 3 CON damage (Well, 1d3 after this one) once per round for 6 rounds from a poisoned bone shard shot from a well-concealed launcher in the pillar. Cure 2 saves.

Rohini Soni |

Does the trap affect everybody or only the first in line? In any event, based on Hanethes' report, Rohini will be flying. Should we post our actions based on the assumption that he returns and informs us of what he saw?

Talon Skyfall |

In other words probably me. Well at least I know what to look forward to.

Hanethes Starsprings |

Hanethes returns and reports to everyone what he had seen (via message if necessary)
"It seems perfectly fine, as far as traps go. Which is unusual, since I was kind of expecting one to be there."

Talon Skyfall |

"Which just means the trap is even more elaborate than we thought. Or it's just that easy." When everyone is ready Talon will lead them up the stairs and get hit by the shard.
Fort Save: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
While the shard pierces Talon's flesh, his system fights off the poison.

Drovya Gregorovitch |

Once Hanethes describes the situation atop the pillar, Drovya nods grimly and waits for Rohini to apply divine protections to the rest of the group.
Once this is done, he waits at the midway point for Talon to get close to the top before casting fly on himself, downing the elemental breath and preparing to enter the fray from behind the vulnadaemon.
Fly lasts 9 minutes. The elemental breath lasts 10 rounds. We also get 10 minutes of +2 sacred to AC and saves from the communal protection from evil and resist electric 10 for 10 minutes. I'll try to keep a running tab of buffs as they are applied.

Drovya Gregorovitch |

Drovya will definitely wait for everyone to enter battle. He may be unhinged, but he's not suicidal. Haka, if you want, I'll drop you on the battle-deck, but, based on our experience with the Suspira's, you might want to attack from range instead.

Talon Skyfall |

So, can we not get to the bad guys unless we fly?

Talon Skyfall |

Then I will run up them to alleviate the possible burden of having to be carried.

Haka Thunderfoot |

The stairs still exist. You can still go up them. If you run you can get up there quickly. Two rounds, in fact (provided someone carries Haka).
Carrying, I'm okay with. Tossing, not so much. Who's up for toting a halfling? I'll carry the drums, so you don't have to. Or I can just make a dramatic entrance a round behind the rest of you. Or you could give me a six-second head start.

Talon Skyfall |

Well, I'm no faster than you are. So we can both just be fashionably late.

Kanthuun |

Kanthuun nods at Drovya and also casts Fly, drinks his Elemental Breath, and then drinks his potion of Invisibility for good measure.
Before he vanishes, he does an amazing series of gestures that immediately explain to the rest of the party that he will cast Web on the daemons from above prior to melee.
From a great distance (200' or so), he prepares to cast his spell...
dun dun dun! Shall I open the surprise round with the Web?

Talon Skyfall |

Why do anything if you can't do it in style?
