Tirion Jörðhár |
Cast Fly, Invisibility and Enlarge Person on Mirrin and Red.
Cast Invisibility on Tirion and Tomkin's dog.
When we are as close to the bottom as we can reasonably get, Tirion will cast Haste on the party (max of 9 targets, I think that gets all of us, the griffin, the puppy and the elemental) using the Rod of Extend Spell.
Fly - duration 9 minutes
Invisibility - 9 minutes
Haste - 18 rounds
Tirion will also cast Protection from Energy and Spectral Hand on himself.
Protection from Energy (108 hp damage) - 90 minutes or until used up
------
If there are any other spells that need to be cast, please let me know. I can cast Enlarge Person, Invisibility and Fly on Lorth as well if necessary.
------
I don't mind using my level 4 slots for level 3 spells some as I have few level 4 spells that are really useful for this battle, although I can cast Glitterdust, Stinking Cloud and Fireball with the Piercing Spell metamagic if needed.
DM Harpwizard |
Ok, I've got a sense of the preparations being made. Next, could you give me the sequence of events. For example, is Bofus climbing up alone? Once he gets up there then Tirion casts fly, etc. What order do you want the party members to arrive in his cave? I will not require a stealth check as long as you are off the map. So you can cast your spells safely from a distance. However, once you approach the dragon and/or land in his cave, I will ask for the stealth check.
Tirion Jörðhár |
Just remember, the short spell is the Haste. We all need to be within 30' for that. Then there will be 2-3 rounds of flying up (hasted), before the attack. Bofus can be carried 1/2 or 2/3 of the way up and be allowed to climb the rest of the way to speed things up. He will also be hasted. The real question is how long it is going to take to get up to the cave. We will have 16 rounds of haste before I would need to recast it.
Tirion Jörðhár |
Depends on the elevation. Either way it is not more than 3 rounds I would think.
Also, I can cast Badger's ferocity the first round to grant everyone the equivalent of a Keen weapon. Not sure who all this will help (who already has a keen weapon), but I do not know how many of my spells are really effective against the dragon's DR after the buffs. It is a concentration spell, but crits, especially with Bofus and his Butterfly Sting, can be very effective.
DM Harpwizard |
Without haste, it will take Bofus about 5 rounds (20 ft move, 100 ft. cliff) to get climb to the top of the cliff entrance. Do you wish to cast haste, far away from the cliff, at the bottom of the cliff before Bofus ascends or do you cast haste once you are all together at the top of the cliff? The answer to this question will affect the dragon's perception modifier as well as the remaining duration once the battle starts. Could you all kindly check to see if I've got all of the following spell effects accounted for.
• Mirrin:
Fly (8 minutes)
Invisibility (8 minutes)
Enlarge Person (8 minutes)
Haste
Resist Energy (10 minutes)
• Red
Fly (8 minutes)
Invisibility (8 minutes)
Enlarge Person (8 minutes)

Bofus Beerswizzler |
Without haste, it will take Bofus about 5 rounds (20 ft move, 100 ft. cliff) to get climb to the top of the cliff entrance.
Correction: Bofus' move is 25 (took the Fleet feat way back when) so it should be 4 rounds. Thank you. :-)
Cast it early. It will double Bofus' move to 50, so that means only 2 rounds to climb. And we don't have to worry about the dragon hearing the casting!!
If this battle lasts long enough for Haste to play out, we're in trouble.
Tomkin the Doughty |
Before the descent, he casts bless (50 rounds). Tomkin will be using his wand of shield and protection from evil on the way down.
UMD: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (5) + 19 = 241d20 + 19 ⇒ (12) + 19 = 31
Tirion Jörðhár |
Bofus should be able to make it in 1 round to the top. Speed is 25', Haste doubles to 50'. Bofus cannot run, but he can double move for 100' in the round.
With the Rod of Extend Spell, Haste will last 18 rounds, that should get us most of the way there.
DM Harpwizard |
I have no doubt Bofus could move faster, and get to the top in one round, but depending on what modifiers you want for his stealth check, he should actually move at half speed to assume no penalties.
Stealth:You can move up to half your normal speed and use Stealth at no penalty. When moving at a speed greater than half but less than your normal speed, you take a -5 penalty. It's impossible to use Stealth while attacking, running, or charging.

UNLESS a well-prepared thief has the Fast STealth talent, allowing full speed move w/out penalty. Had that since 2nd level.
Still will take 2 rounds. Spider Climb grants climb of 20, hastened to 40. Double move gets me 80', balance on round 2. Still well worth casting Haste early to maximize stealth.
DM Harpwizard |
Bofus quickly and stealthily ascends the cliff face like a spider. He reaches the cliff level to find the large dragon tail is attached to a huge blue dragon!
The rest of the company coordinates their attack to reach the cliff side with the use of their fly spells. Meanwhile Tomkin rides his blink dog, to suddenly appear before the dragon in a chamber that looks like the nest of five dragons!
I am now ready for you to each roll your stealth checks. Tyrgarun will roll his perception check soon.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Stealth: d20+27=34 <--ha! just as stealthy as the invisible guy
At the top, Bofus prepares his brand new arrows, nocking one and aiming directly at the sensitive area at the base of the tail...
Tyrgarun |
Perception: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (12) + 22 = 34
The dragon's eyes open and he declares in a booming voice. "Who has come to the Fane of Tiamat?! Show yourself or I will assume you are trespassing!"
Suddenly you all feel that sinking feeling of fright begin to take hold of you as you realize that this huge blue dragon is awake!
Will Save DC21 for everyone in a 180 foot radius please.
Lorth Blood-Seer |
Will Save: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (12) + 14 = 26
Unbowed by the beast, Lorth tenses his muscles and looks to surge to the fray...
Intent is to attack unless other actions taken preclude or forestall this. I assume that'll require initiative, which is why I haven't posted actions.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Will: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 7 + 2 = 24
Bofus gulps, takes a deep breath, and gets ready to let his arrow fly. He's hoping against hope that he can still get in a few sneak shots...he glances back to make sure he's not completely alone, and...
ready to let fly. If at least one other ally is in position, he'll shoot as much of a volley as he can!! If he gets initiative and hits all 3 arrows, that'll be 21d6 for an opener, yo
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Omg those clutch rolls.
Let's hope we're not completely front-loading ALL our luck...
DM Harpwizard |
No, that was an important save to make. Without it, you would not even be able to stand next to this dragon!
Initiative
Bofus Initiative: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
Rebel Red’s Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Tirion’s Initiative: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Lorth’s Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Mirrin’s Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Tomkin’s Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Tyrgarun: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

Bofus Beerswizzler |
ROUND 1
Bofus trusts that his friends will aid him and prevent him from becoming a very small dragon snack. Taking advantage of Tirion's Haste magic, he unloads three Dragonbane arrows.
Attack: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (19) + 17 = 36
Damage: 1d6 + 3 + 2d6 + 5d6 ⇒ (1) + 3 + (4, 6) + (6, 5, 4, 5, 1) = 35
Attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15
Damage: 1d6 + 3 + 2d6 + 5d6 ⇒ (3) + 3 + (4, 1) + (2, 1, 6, 6, 4) = 30
Attack: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (3) + 17 = 20
Damage: 1d6 + 3 + 2d6 + 5d6 ⇒ (6) + 3 + (3, 6) + (5, 4, 5, 6, 2) = 40
Crap. One hit.
Tirion Jörðhár |
Will: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Seeing the party all resisting the dragon's fear, Tirion calls on her draconic heritage to make his companion's weapons more powerful.
Cast Badger's Ferocity
--> Lorth, Bofus and Mirrin's weapons all have the effect of Keen Edge, doubling their critical range. <-- if someone already has Keen, let me know and I can switch. I know that Red's falchion is already Keen.
Tomkin the Doughty |
Round 1 Tomkin
Tommy asks for help to smite the evil creature from his patron. He swings three times with his glaive, enhanced by the magic spell of speed.
Swift=smite evil +4 to hit and +9 damage vs evil and may bypass Then full attack vs dragon.
Effect = Haste, shield, bless, protection from evil, smite evil and he will take the badger's ferocity
hit1/damage: 1d20 + 18 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 18 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 4 = 311d8 + 20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 20 + 9 = 32
iterative/damage: 1d20 + 18 - 8 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 18 - 8 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 4 = 241d8 + 20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 20 + 9 = 33
haste bonus/damage: 1d20 + 18 - 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 18 - 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 4 = 331d8 + 20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 20 + 9 = 33
Mirrin of The Deep |
Mirrin spares the creature any battle cry adn simply starts hacking it to pieces.
1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 15 + 1 = 33 Attack 1
1d10 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 18 + 2 = 26
1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 15 + 1 = 35 Attack 2 Hasted
1d10 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 18 + 2 = 26
1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 10 + 1 = 30 Attack 3
1d10 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 18 + 2 = 28
Bites will go full defense for now.
Mirrin of The Deep |
f&&+ me. let's just confirm all three crits too while we're at it.
1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 15 + 1 = 32 crit confirm 1
2d10 + 36 + 4 ⇒ (9, 2) + 36 + 4 = 51
1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 15 + 1 = 28 Crit confirm 2
2d10 + 36 + 4 ⇒ (7, 6) + 36 + 4 = 53
1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 10 + 1 = 24 Crit confirm 3
2d10 + 36 + 4 ⇒ (1, 2) + 36 + 4 = 43
Minor mistake on the damage rolls. forgot bardiche is a x2 not a x3 crit.
so assuming only taking the first roll from the crits.
damage 1 would be 29
damage 2 would be 38
damage 3 would be 21
This is just the crit damage not the normal damage.
DM Harpwizard |
Round 1
• Tirion casts Badger's Ferocity. Lorth, Bofus and Mirrin's weapons all have the effect of Keen Edge, doubling their critical range.
• Bofus fires three dragonbane arrows. The first shot hits its mark and pierces into the dragon, but the other two bounce off its scaly hide.
• Mirrin flies up to the Blue dragon and hacks at it before it has a moment to move and slays the great beast.
We are out of initiative.
The dragon's lair is silent.
Lorth Blood-Seer |
Not that any of his companions could see it, but Lorth sighs and looks forlornly at his scimitar. It had been two engagements thus far and the blade had yet to be drawn in anger. In time perhaps... he hoped. Instead the invisible warpriest moved to the dragon's side and checked it's breath - wanting to ensure that it had been ended.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Bofus drops his bow and reaches for his rapier as the dragon falls.
He blinks. And again.
Wow. Um, good...good job guys!! That was pretty bad-a$$.
After pausing a moment to make sure he's not dreaming, Bofus scans the area for his 2 arrows that went wide...
50% chance to find missed arrow: 1d100 ⇒ 93
50% chance to find missed arrow: 1d100 ⇒ 75
and unfortuantely finds two broken arrows. He mutters dam, these were expensive!, then casts about for Fabled Dragon Treasures, using the blue Eye of the Dragon!
Search: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (7) + 20 = 27
Bofus Beerswizzler |
"How is this battle supposed to be sung about when there was barely enough time to form one sentence?" Red asks, dejectedly.
There was one sentence, though--a DEATH SENTENCE!! The jittery halfling is trying to work of the battle-rush since there was so little actual battle to do the working-off.
Tomkin the Doughty |
Tomkin leaps off his mount and realizes the battle was over quickly.
"Flawless swordwork. I have never seen a three part combination executed with such lethal force."
DM Harpwizard |
This large cavern contains five alcoves. Each of the alcoves are similar in that they contain a large dragon nest, piles of bones and a modest hoard of treasure! Although the dragons differed with age and power, they all had fairly similar monetary hoards, as befits the draconic fellowship they all joined. These hoards consist of piles of coins of every denomination, bags of gems, and miscellaneous art objects and pieces of jewelry. Besides these hoards of treasure, each of these alcoves reveals a little of the personalities of the five dragons who resided here.
The first lair on the left is fairly empty. However, the bones from his meals appear stacked in neat almost obsessive stacks against the walls. This hoard is worth 1d4 ⇒ 3x500 = 1500 gold pieces.
Moving clockwise around the cavern, the next nest is surrounded on its walls and floor with elaborate swirls and hollows carved by claws and acidic spittle. It smells musty with an acrid odor that lingers. Aside from the hoard, it is stark and bare. This hoard is worth 1d6 ⇒ 2x500 = 1000 gold pieces,
The third nest stinks of sulfur and ash, and the walls are covered in soot. An extensive collection of skulls is embedded on the wall, affixed to melted metal that has been used as a mounting matrix for the collection. This hoard is worth 1d6 ⇒ 6x500 = 3000 gold pieces.
The fourth lair is the largest of the alcoves and is the only cavern that is still definitely lived in. It is decorated with stone shaped carvings of Tiamat. The nest is fairly clean and free of foul smells. This hoard contains 9,700 silver pieces, 8,200 gold pieces, 180 platinum pieces, a fine gold statuette of an elf maiden worth 1,600 gold pieces, an inconsequential blue gem, 3 matched emeralds in a wooden case, each worth 700 gold pieces, 8 smaller gemstones each worth 40 gold pieces, an adamantine greatsword, a magical belt, a cloak, a pair of boots, and a staff.
The fifth lair is on the right and it alone has concessions for a human guest. A small chair, table, and even a bed against one wall. The nest is otherwise a mess with bones scattered everywhere. This hoard is worth 1d6 ⇒ 5x500 = 2500 gold pieces.
Bofus Beerswizzler |
Aaaahhh, to the victors go the spoils! But ho, what's this pretty thing?!?!
Bofus gleefully plucks out the blue Dragon's Eye gemstone from the hoard he's standing in front of.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a complete set of 10! We have GOT to get them all together and see what happens...
He starts to sort out the wealth, setting aside the items that Tirion tells him radiate magic so that they can be identified.
Treasure is noted in my Group Spot/Undivided Loot spoiler on my profile!
Tirion Jörðhár |
Tirion shakes his head in disbelief:
Remember that first green and our dealing with the red. Boy, times sure have changed.
He then casts Detect Magic to see if he can determine what is to be discerned about the items:
Spellcraft(adamantine greatsword): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35
Spellcraft(belt): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (11) + 15 = 26
Spellcraft(cloak): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20
Spellcraft(boots): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (15) + 15 = 30
Spellcraft(staff): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33
Hopefully that will get a few of them.
Mirrin of The Deep |
Mirrin take the time to remove the horns and claws of the beast. By the end of his grisly work Bites is feasting on entrails and Mirrin is elbows deep in blood. "Fighting's not for entertainin. It's for killin the other bastard."
