Briar carefully moves to the doors/windows of the Trapper's Hole, hoping to hear/see something that might indicate that the store would be opening soon.

I need some arrows against them flying devils.  Impstickers.

Finally admitting defeat and resolving to come back another day, Briar will enter the Hedge Wizardry shop to purchase 50 gp in magical inks for which to scribe scrolls.  On initial character purchase.

Now that I have magic, might as well write some things down.

When he has taken care of himself, he will enjoin the party in selling off the loot from Lamm's (either Saul's or the jewelers, as appropriate):

Fondo looks through the items carefully, keeping his cloak draped so as to obscure the valuables from passersby.

His eyes settle on the bejeweled broach and the silver ring signed "Emmah." He considers whether they remind him of any locals, and says, "Before we sell... These items may have some sentimental worth that outweighs what they might get us on the open market. One is ungodly exquisite, the other inscribed. Do they look familiar to any of you?"

Knowledge Local on ring, 'Emmah' 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Knowledge Local on broach 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

While it's true that someone is certainly missing their items, you're not sure who or how best to get their items back to them.

You could hire a town crier to try and locate 'Emmah', but it would be a tricky operation at best, and there are many Emmah's in the city. It's a not-uncommon name.

Does the party go first to Saul's to unload the heavier items or first to Gemshare to unload the jewelry?

Nikolay has both wands.

"Let us begin at Saul's and then we can head to the jeweler's."

Briar:
Phaeton is quite business like and formal. He's very pleased to see you, "It is nice to see someone not afraid of the gangs and thugs that seem to be wandering the streets this otherwise fine day." He sells you the inks you need and throw in a fine quill as well to aid in your work. While his shop is small and tidy, it contains a wide variety of magics - not just scrolls and potions.

When you walk in, you see a Dwarf trying on some banded mail in the armor section of this largish shop filled with all the tools an adventuring party might need. He bellows, "Saul! Guests!" and turns to you more quietly, "Saul will be here in a moment, he just stepped into the back."

The dwarf struggles for a moment with the fit, but manages to get the armor on successfully. He walks over to a mirror and begins adjusting the straps of the armor - nice looking stuff, still oily and new.

After few moments, another dwarf comes out of a doorway in the back. He's on the tall side for a dwarf and lean. He wears a leather kilt, a fine well worn tunic, and has a variety pouches all around his waist. A bandolier sits comfortably on one shoulder and he wears a hand axe on his belt. He strides forward with what must be, for a dwarf, a wide smile.

"I'm Saul, and this is my place. What can I do for you fine fellows on such an unforgiving morning?"

GM Evilan:

Briar smiles oddly at the shopkeeper, Phaeton, trying to be friendly.

"I'm pleased to find you open; I had feared that nothing would be open this day.  Yes, while we have seen a few thugs, it has been the imps who have actually attacked us.  Perhaps they thought us to be weak and easy prey."  And perhaps they were right.  Briar walks about the shop, his hands twitching at the magic there.

Find the magic.
Well, I've found the magic...but I don't think is what you were talking about, brother, were you?

"I shall be needing these inks and this scroll paper.  No doubt that I shall return later for more.  It might be that I am in town for longer than I thought.  I am Briar."  Briar extends his hand for an elven shake.

When his goods are bought and paid for, he will politely excuse himself.

"Dangerous times is right. Why, just hours ago, we were fending off imps, almost impervious to our swings of steel." Barael takes in the inventory with approval in his eyes. "You wouldn't happen to have silvered weapons ready and waiting for a willing hand?

Briar:
He shakes your hand evenly. "I'm Phaeton Skoda at your service. I do hope you stay here in Korvosa - we need more independent minds in the magical arts. The imps were likely from the Acadamae. Novices are taught to summon them, and they occasionally get away and have become something of a menace in our city. But at least they have done the same with the pseudodragons to even the score." He smiles thinly.

Saul replies, "Aye, these are troubling times. Let us hope the Queen is as even handed as the King and calms the populace down without undue bloodshed. But she must do something, clearly."

"I've got silvered weapons, and even a mithril long sword too there on the far wall. Help yourself. I prefer mithril myself. Very expensive, but they don't dull the edge the way silver does. I can even get you two oils of Bless Weapon for just 50 gold each from a Paladin I know. Buy it from a priest and it's 300 sails each if you can find it!"

"As you look around, please let me know if there is something you don't see. Much of my business is in fact dealing with other businesses to assist my clients. In fact I have agreements with everyone in Eodred’s Walk so dealing with me is the same as dealing with them - no markup!"

"Now, let me see what you've got for old Saul."

What all do you give him to buy? I presume the armor and weapons at least, but what of the jewelry?

"I'll give you 2,610 sails for the lot - excepting this broach. This I will not buy from you as I am an honest merchant and unwilling to put myself in the way of the law... or your benefit!"

He sets the broach down separately from the other items, "This is the Queens own broach, listed as missing and highly sought after. I believe there is a reward being offered for the return of the item as it was stolen from a confidant on their way to have the item mended."

I suggest we spend 750gp on a wand of cure light wounds.

"The Queen, you say?" Could that be the Tyrant the cards revealed? "What say you, friends? It would seem our duty to lift her Grace's spirits on such a sorrowful day." What greater reward could there by than a Chelish queen's affections? Save no Chelish queen at all...

Fondo thinks a moment, and draws aside his companions, whispering. "Perhaps we could secure a slightly larger sum, if we were to establish his payment as a line of credit." He's a friendly enough gadjo, but grandmother'd be aggrieved if I took the first number that passed his lips.

Briar:
"Back so soon! Welcome!" The hedge wizard does in fact have wands of cure light wounds. Two of them in fact - and a wand of cure moderate. "I try to keep these in stock as they're a hot item generally." The rates are standard (750 gold).

Saul frowns as Briar leaves his shop. Missed opportunity with that one.

He turns to Fondo and the others. "Hahah! A discount already!? I admire your initiative but such arrangements are reserved for bulk sales, and occasionally for large ticket items. I suggest we move a little more slowly as we get to know each other, shall we?"

"As for the wand, I can certainly get that for you. Mr. Skoda around the corner has them in stock. You'd think of me rather poorly I feel if I were to take such a clearly one sided deal. No, I think we're being hasty here and we should let our relationship develop over time."

"Who knows? Maybe the Queen will be so taken by you that she grants you minor nobility! You may never need me again you'll have so many servants to do your bidding!" He chuckles at the thought, not unkindly but rather invitingly.

Briar knocks an arrow and is again ready to travel the streets of Korvosa towards the palace.

If you have other purchases, please go ahead and not them, but we'll proceed for now...

The party makes it's way through the lower midland district and to Castle Korvosa.

You approach the Grand Mastaba - they pyramid upon which Castle Korvosa sits. This four-sided sandstone pyramid is built to s cyclopean scale. A set of stairs cut for humans rises up the center of the northeastern face of the pyramid. One corner of the massive pyramid appears crumbled and worn, but this is not the result of poor construction. Rather, the attacks of lazy masons and stoneworkers have caused the looting and degradation of the corner, a practice made illegal by a past King.

You are waved through the guards at the foot of the stairs as if you had clear insignia and permission to pass. Barael is quite shocked at this lack of security at the outermost guard post of the castle. The stairs are long and tiring, but you make your way to the top without incident. There is not much foot traffic, but the skies above are dotted with teams of Sable Marines buzzing about the Keep like flies.

The castle itself is formed of an immense black marble keep. Multiple towers rise from the roofed keep, including the impressively large Epochal Tower (housing an enormous and accurate clock) and the impressively tall Seawatch Tower. Dozens of Korvosan Guards patrol the top of the pyramid and the entrance to the keep. You are eventually escorted by a pair of guards to the entrance to meet with the guard sergeant there.

"What is your purpose in the Keep today?" She looks you over. "More treasure seekers looking for a commission I presume?"

Sleight of hand 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 2 = 25 for Fondo's sap — which he chooses to leave in its wrist-sheath because it would be embarrassing to remove a sap from his wrist in front of the guard...

Nikolay hands over his longsword, silver dagger, sap, and the two wands. He doesn't automatically hand over his spell component pouch (which would contain some wool, a brass key, iron powder, fireflies, and a small wooden archery target), but will if requested.

Not that I'm expecting trouble, but it is nice to still have spells at hand.

"Weapons, do I even... oh, yes.." Dandi reaches down to her ankle, pulling free the dagger she has tucked into her boot.

"That's Dandilion, with a 'D' " she says, leaning in to make sure the guard gets it right.

"Oh, and here's the sling." She smiles prettily again, in hopes that she'll get her own weapon back, and possibly not end up in the dungeons.

The queen looks at the new guests, and turns her full attention on Barael. "I understand you found My Heart's Desire? My brooch, handed down, generation to generation, thought lost, now found... because of you." Barael blushes, and nods his head slowly, then more quickly. "The name, de Gare, I've heard it before. Cressida spoke of you very fondly. I'd like to see a Sir before your name. Time waits for no one, so kneel, and rise, Sir Barael de Gare." The Queen's Hall erupts in thunderous applause. Barael turns to acknowledge the admiring onlookers... and sees Saul looking at him impatiently.

"I'll take these items, and thanks." Barael picks up the new purchases and catches up with the others.

DM Euan:
Barael lowers his voice to Saul. "I also came across something I believe to be a venom of some sort, and I aim to study it a bit more. Do you have access to an Alchemist's Kit that would allow me to work with it? There seems to be a paralytic nature to it, so I may also find it useful to prepare oils or coatings, and might be able to use something like your bandolier to sheathe prepared blades, or somesuch. What say you?

Barael slows his step, looking at the outer post Guard expectantly. Why aren't they... why are they not stopping us for our business? Wax seals usually do the trick, but we have none. We do have the colors... Barael looks from the Guard, to Nikolay, then back to the stairs. His pace picks up briskly. He gains a bit of distance, then pauses to let the party close again. This happens less and less often, as the stairs take their toll on the leg muscles.

As Barael states his name to the guard securing his weapons, the awe of the Castle, and the formal proceedings acknowledging the approaching conversation with Sabina Merrin, Barael's messenger habits kick in, and he aims to explain things quickly and honestly. "ActuallywejustcamefromEodred'sWalkandthekindadviceofMasterSaulinformingust hatwehadaccidentallydiscoveredabroochbutnotjustanybroochtheQueen'sown wellatleastaccordingtoMasterSaulandhetoldusweshouldbringittoherstraightaway ..." Barael takes a huge breath, and nods, trying to make sure that he brought all points to bear in his message.

Awesome post, Barael.

Ah, yes, Knowledge Local about Sabina, if that's not Knowledge Nobility 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 Ha, ha. Barael and Fondo are of a mind.

Thank you, Fondo. Grinning ear to ear from the compliment.

"Captain (I'm guessing)Merrin I presume? I am told you prefer brevity. We have found the Queen's brooch and would like to return it to her - directly to her if you please. As this will, I think, give her a reason to smile in these terribly troubling times would it be possible to expedite this exchange? Perhaps after that we may discuss with you what is involved in getting a commission."
