Dom nods in agreement. He then goes to stand by the door. He looks to everyone to indicate that they should pull out their iron, and get in position. When that's done, he quickly opens the door, and moves out of the way of the gunfire.

Siann nods at the others, having heard the same drunken voices. She draws her sword and makes ready to leap to the attack...


After a moment to prepare, Dom opens the door and the posse readies to enter the room. There are several worn tables and chairs scattered about, and wooden benches are drawn up against the walls. There are sparse decorations, draperies of brown and red, and several ale kegs are propped up and tapped.

Seated around one table are four of the Redbrands, wearing their scarlet shirts. Piled on the table are coins and trinkets, and each of the men has dice and small tin cups in front of them as well--along with flagons. "You f*ckin--" one of them is slurring, but then they start at the door being thrown open. All go for their weapons, but they've obviously had more than a share of the ale, and they're slow on the draw. One even staggers back and falls to the floor as he tries to loose the revolver from its place by his groin.

The posse has a surprise round on the Redbrands, so you're all up! And then Dom and Siann go again for Round 2.

Drake spins around the corner to fire, but has a hard time finding a shot with all the ensuing chaos.

--Surprise and Round 1--

The posse is quick to the punch--Siann, literally--as they move in to attack this group of bandits. Dom's first shot catches a Redbrand in the gut, and the man barely doubles over before Jed fires, his own bullet blasting through the man's chest and putting him down. Siann jumps in, sword and hand working in unison, and she draws a line of red across one man's arm before chopping his throat, stunning him further. Drake fires into the room, but in the chaos, his bullet only ricochets off a tankard, sending the cup spinning through the air. As the bandits continue to draw their pistols, Dom fires another shot before taking cover behind the doorway, but this one misses. Siann, however, is able to finish off her target: while he manages to step back from her sword slash, she brings up her foot and connects heavily with his jaw, and the man spins and lands in a heap on the floor.

The two Redbrands still up finally draw their pistols, and both try to fire on Siann. In their drunkenness, however, neither manages to hit, and the room is simply filled with gunsmoke and the explosive sound of the shots.

Round 1-2: The party is up!

Jed smoothly aims and fires again, blasting away at the next enemy.

Siann's movements are almost poetic as bullets pass both by from the front and the back as her friend's pour lead on the unfortunate bandits, and she spins and leaps towards them...

Readjusting his aim on one of the remaining Redbrands, Drake pushes through the gap quickly and fires off a snap shot with his revolver.

--Round 1-2--

Drake adjusts his aim, gunning for the standing Redbrand, and when he pulls the trigger the man staggers back, a hole having been blown through his shirt as the bullet clipped his ribs. Jed's shot hits the man's thigh, causing him to clutch at the wound and stagger downwards; this gives Siann the perfect opportunity to lunge in with her sword, and with a howl, the bandit falls to the floor, clutching helplessly at the deep stab through his stomach. Dom steps in with pistols raised, and fires point-blank on the last remaining Redbrand, the one who'd fallen to the floor. It's there that he dies, a pair of bullet holes in his chest, and his own revolver clatters to the floor as the last of his life ebbs away.

It's at that moment that the door behind the posse opens with a crash, and as one they turn to see what comes through. In this case, it's a trio of bugbears: one with a double-barreled shotgun, one with a pair of hulking revolvers, and one with a large, bloodstained axe. The big goblinoids take one look at the present affair of things, and the leader--the one with the shotgun--bellows out in the Goblin tongue, moving to aim his weapon.

Round 2 into Round 3! The posse is up! None of the bugbears have cover, nor are they likely to unless they retreat into their room. Meanwhile, movement can get any member of the party into cover, between the doorway, the hallway, and the furniture in the room you just cleared.


Drake spins around and takes a quick sidestep behind the cover of the door frame. "Kill the one with the shotgun first!" Following his own advice, Drake pops out and lets instinct guide him as he snaps off another shot at the massive goblinoid.

Normally Siann would boldy face their foe face-to-face, but three bugbears give even her pause. Instead , she sheaths her sword and pull her bow from across her back, fits and arrow and firest at the shotgun wielding bugbear...

--Round 2/3--

At the sight of the bugbears, the posse turns and starts shooting, standing their ground for now to focus fire on the new enemy. The foursome all agree that the shotgun is the primary target, and three rounds punch into the brute's flesh, two in the gut and one in the shoulder. It lets out a roar of pain, and is able to duck in time to avoid Siann's bow-shot.

The bugbear with the shotgun brings its weapon up and levels it at Dom, focused on the man with two guns. The blast is deafening in the close quarters of the hallway, but Dom is able to avoid the worst of it--there's a hell of a burning sting along his right thigh, but it's better than a gutshot. The pistolero bugbear fires a pair of shots at Drake, and surprisingly, both hit--one catches the man along the ribs, while the other grazes his shoulder, the force nearly spinning him back into the wall. The third creature charges in with a howl, and the bloodstained axe arcs down toward Jed, but it only scrapes along the stone floor, sending up a streak of sparks.

The brutes have come in with a vengeance, but our heroes aren't down yet--and they aren't likely to go down without a fight.

The party is up! Dom, you're taking 8 damage from that shot; Drake, you take a total of 14.

Jed aims for a second, then lowers his gun and puts a hand on Drake's shoulder, channeling his healing power into the other man's body. "Yeah, let's get that patched up before you bleed out."

Dom grits his teeth, curses, and returns another couple of rounds at the bugbear that nailed him with the shotgun.

He then moves away looking for some cover.

...If there is any. Figures the better damage was with the crappier roll. Ah, well.


Drake lets an inhuman noise slip past his lips, wrenching his way back around the door frame to shoot at the bugbear that wounded him. "I'm gonna skin that f*cker and wear him as a belt," he says, either as some sort of reply to Jed's healing or just out of anger.

Dom brings up his pistols and fires again; this time, one shot hits the shotgun-wielding bugbear straight in the chest, and it slumps back against the wall, the weapon clattering to the floor. As Jed steps back to heal Drake, energy coursing through his hand to knit close the wounds, Siann leaps to fill his place. Her hands weave in and out with incredible speed, and Axe Man roars in pain as she cuts and jabs, every hit landing as the bugbear struggles to defend itself. Drake launches his own attack, shooting once with his revolver, but the pain of the wounds affects his aim, and the bullet only careens off the ceiling.

The bugbear with the axe howls and brings the weapon around in a chop at Siann's head. The young woman tries to duck, but the sudden speed and rage of the attack are astounding, and the edge catches her temple as she dodges. She feels a sudden spike of burning pain, and everything goes a reddish-white as she drops to the floor. Pistols, meanwhile, fires another pair of shots, this time split between Drake and Dom--neither quite connects, although one is close.

Siann, you've taken 19 damage and are dropped to 0 hit points; that was a nasty crit, although not as bad as it could have been. The party is up.

"Son of a b*tch..." Jed kneels down and sets his hand on the bloody axe wound and forces the rest of his holy power out into the monk's body.

No, you took 19; I'm not including modifiers on my rolls, to preserve some element of mystery to the rolling ;) (Although you can usually figure out the modifiers with a little guesswork, which I don't mind.)

"God d*mmit," Drake mutters as the bugbear with the axe drops Siann to the ground. He takes a step back and shoots the axe-wielding goblinoid with his revolver. "Get her steady," he says to Jed. "I'll take care of ugly over here." Assuming the bugbear is still standing after his shot, he waves the creature toward him with his off-hand, trying to coax it into attacking him instead of Jed or Siann.

"Simon!" Dom calls out as he spits out another volley of hell fire from his six-shooters--this time aiming at the Bugbear standing over Simon.

He drops the now-empty, smoking-hot piece in his right hand, and eyes the shotgun on the floor.

Would I know if the shotgun still had a round in it?


As Jed dives to heal Siann, the other men both turn their pistols on her attacker. With two roars of gunfire, the bugbear's head is blasted to bits, and it topples backwards to paint its sickly blood on the wall and floor of the hallway.

Siann, you do get an action this round since you're awake again--you would've dropped your sword when you fell unconscious, although that's not a big drawback for you, being a monk. Dom, it's a double-barreled shotgun, and the bugbear only got off one shot with it, so assuming it was kept fully loaded it would indeed have a round left.

Indeed, only the bugbear with two revolvers remains. Also, just so you all know, I'm going on another brief trip the next couple days. I should have plenty of time and ability to post, but I'll probably only be able to check in once a day or so.


Just posting in to let you know that I'm waiting on Siann--it's no problem, don't want to call you out or anything, just letting you guys know why I haven't updated here.

Siann's momentary unconciousness fades quickly as a deep warmth pots into her from Jeb'S hand.

Sitting up she gives the man a quick smile, the leaps to her feet.

Not wanting to temp fate again, she grabs her bow and fires at the remaining bugbear...

Siann comes to just in time to see her attacker collapse in a gory display. Reacting quickly, she draws her bow and an arrow sails out, planting in the thigh of the remaining bugbear. It howls and fires its pistols once more, aiming for the men who just put down its companion. Dom is able to duck back behind his cover just in time to avoid catching a bullet, but Drake isn't so lucky. The lead slams into his shoulder, the impact nearly knocking him from his feet, and he feels warm blood quickly soaking into his clothing.

Drake, you take 12 points of damage, and the party is up! Just one enemy left.

With his divine powers starting to run low, Jed raises his pistol and opens fire on the last bugbear. Still distracted, his shot goes very wide and dings uselessly off the wall.

The strange cadence is in his voice again, and he raises his gun for the bugbear's skull. "I've̡ ha̛d énough ơf͡ ͢yo͢ư ̀i͘d͞i̴ot̵ìç w͢al͟king̷ ̷c̵arp̢et͟s. Now͏ ͢hee̛l."

Dom drops his pistol, and picks up the shotgun laying on the ground. He moves it in the general direction of the bugbear and squeezes the trigger.

Shotgun (0/2): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 2) + 4 = 12

If I could take an aim action, add +2 to the roll. I wasn't sure since I might have needed the bonus action to pick it up.


Apologies for the delay--I was waiting on Siann, and then lost power for a block of time when I would have posted over the weekend. Drawing or picking up weapons is typically a non-action once per round in 5E, so that's fine.

With just one bugbear remaining, the posse focuses their fire. Jed's pistol misses, but Drake blasts a round that takes off one of the bugbear's ears in a gout of blood and a scream from the creature. Dom dives for the floor and grabs the shotgun, and he brings it up just before pulling the trigger. There's another deafening roar, and the bugbear is nearly knocked off its feet into the wall. It slumps to the ground with a dying gurgle, a mass of gristle and blood where half its chest used to be.

Combat is over! For defeating the Redbrands and bugbears, you each gain 250 XP. This does bring you across the threshold to 3rd level--a short rest will net you your extra hit dice (and hit points), but you need a long rest to gain the class features and other benefits.

Dom gasps in pain when he stands up. That little maneuver had done a number on his knees.

"Everyone, okay? That was a little too hairy for my tastes."

Dom picks up his revolvers and starts loading them. He only has enough bullets to load one fully. So he sighs and loads a single bullet into his second revolver. He then checks the downed men for ammo or anything else of value.

INT (investigation): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (10) + 0 = 10


"I'͢v͠è—" Drake coughs, then rubs his wound. "I've been worse. We should rest. I'd prefer to take long enough to patch ourselves up, but I don't think we have the time to do much more than take a breather."

I would love to take a long rest, but we don't really have the time.

Dom nods and moves to close off to barricade the doors as best he can. They needed to catch their breath.

I second taking a short rest. We are pretty beat up.

"Easy there, Simon. You took a bigger beatin' than the rest of us combined. Sit a spell. If there's anyone else out there, we can't exactly take 'em on like this anyhow."


After checking over their immediate surroundings, the posse decides to take what they can from the corpses and hole up in the room they just cleared, taking a breather from clearing out this den of robbers. They spend the better part of an hour resting there, watchful eyes on the doors. It isn't quite peaceful or safe enough to take a nap, but the break lets everyone work out their stiffness, as well as go over their recent spoils.

6 revolvers (2 fully loaded, 2 with 5 rounds loaded, 2 with 3 rounds loaded)

Everyone can go ahead and spend Hit Dice for healing and so on.
