Monster Lore and Giants

Slayer Class Discussion

Please change the wording in Monster Lore to include giants (or more particularly trolls) as they do not currently qualify as non-humanoids and are therefore not applicable, despite being quite monstrous.

Had the exact same thought. Giant-Slayer seems like an obvious premise for the class, but RAW most giants are excluded from the core knowledge feature.

Definitely intended to include giants, given they're listed as viable trophy options. Good catch, John.

All (higher-level) humanoids are viable trophy options; you just don't have monster knowledge about them.

Hags, Giants, Boggards, Serpantfolk, Oni, and Xulgath all feel thematically appropriate to be included in the Monster Lore but have the humanoid trait.
But who knows! Paizo has recently been trying to distance themselves from explicitly de-humanizing people-like enemies. It could all be intentional.

As I just told someone on Reddit, I've never met either in person but I imagine an empyrial dragon is much more reasonable and easier to relate to than a troll.

Don't forget skelm, sedacthy, medusas, yetis, and (most jarringly) the VAST majority of werecreatures!

Honestly it should just allow to use Quarry vs any creature. Restrict for non-humanoids just makes the class almost useless in most games due most of them are full of humanoids enemies.

Quarry is a against any creature, this is just about the Monster Lore auto-skill.

I think YuriP just means to allow Monster Lore to always apply to your quarry, regardless of creature type but everything else would be restricted.

I honestly think it would be much better if the slayer had an alternative way to RK about foes, since I think the slayer feels to close to the thaumaturge since both use some sort of tool and have an auto-scaling universal lore, except the thaumaturge's is much better. Even Paizo likely recognizes this since rather than to make Monster Lore a 1:1 with Esoteric Lore they kept it as Int-based but instead granted slayers free Assurance and Automatic Knowledge.

To keep the core idea of "slayers knowing automatically how to defeat a foe", I'd rather would like to see RK being mixed into Mark Quarry, allowing the slayer to make a certain number of questions about their quarry after spending 10 minutes to mark them. Since Mark Quarry is already restrictive enough, I feel a number of questions equal to the slayer's Wisdom modifier would be appropiate, even something like 1 + Wisdom modifier could be as well.

No, I was the one who got confused.

It's with this whole quarry + monster lore + trophies thing that I ended up actually mixing things up.

The idea of getting trophies from enemies, which take parts of their abilities, along with the idea that monster lore only works against monsters, somehow ended up in my head as if the quarry was also only against monsters.
