I'd love for an official sphinx race! Reskin Anadi, starts as a winged cat with a human form and then at fifth level hybrid form to a full fledged sphinx. Kitsune are in the same boat, maybe even beastkin could pull it off? Awakened animal is close too, though their minus to int isnt the best for it.
What ideas do you all have? I think you just need to be a cat with wings, and a hybrid form? Doesn't have to be large for this discussion. :) I just think Sphinx's are really cool and always wanted to play as one.
If you are interested in third party products, Battlezoo Ancestries: Year of Legends provides the sphinx ancestry. That line of books has a variety of heritages and lots of background information for each ancestry. I’ve used the Battlezoo Ancestries to fill out my reincarnate list in my home game, and am interested in giving them a try as the material seems well-balanced.

Ancestry stat modifiers can be swapped out for two free choices, so awakened animal can get an Int bonus. Large size cat with wings from the winged heritage, right from first.

It's on my todo list, just sit tight for about three years. :3-<
I feel that it's best to pull back a bit and make them less specific. The important bit is humanoid-faced quadruped with mystical natures. Masks would cover the hiera and crio variations. Wings, inscrutability, majestic power, and riddle association can all be feats or heritages. Some types of animal bases might be heritages, like large vs. medium.
Hybrid form is optional as long as they can balance on two legs, maybe another feat option.

I don't expect quadrupedal sphinxes, but the related humanoid creatures, the Maftets, seem primed to be a player Ancestry someday.
Those would be a good and direct base. I would prefer wings to be strictly optional, since sphinxes only sometimes have wings. The rune also fits easily into either a feat or simply an ancestry-specific magic tattoo. Flight, riddles, divination, guardianship, roaring, desert survival, and unarmed attacks provide more than enough variety for ancestry options.
Riddles could easily be a debuff that works a bit like Bon Mot, but with a psychic damage risk on a crit save.
I love where this is going. :) A kitsune with wings and hybrid form is soooo close to a Maftet. Maybe i can convince my GM to let me do a kitsune thats a cat instead of a fox?

With the remaster playing a kobold who was born near a place a sphinx was guarding could be fun. Like little tomb guardians helping put traps out and collecting riddles to challenge themselves and others with.
