Fly Speed / Airwalk for Wolf Mount

Advice

I'm trying to get my Samurai Wolf Mount a way to attack aerial targets in melee (being able to charge would be optimal).

Sadly, most items that grant a fly speed need to be activated by the creature that wears them and ACs can't do that.

There is ointment of flying, but that's 2k gold a pop.

Any ideas?

I believe training a mount to use airwalk was a specific trick, but I am at work and can't look myself. It might have been 3.5. If not, training an animal to utilize a spell would likely be the way to go.
Otherwise you might need horseshoes of [whatever] but modified for creatures without hooves; anklets, bangles, or whatever you call shoes you put on dogs.

I see no reason that the command word to activate an item like Wings of Flying can't be a bark. Just teach the wolf to bark whenever it wants to get into the air. There's even a trick you can teach your AC called Perform that covers things like barking on command. I doubt it would work for finding a magic item in a pile of loot, but could work if you have access to crafting.

The Elemental Companion (Air) archetype grants a fly speed of 20ft with good maneuverability at level 9. I don’t know if this is in the level range you want to have such an ability. I’m going to go out on a limb and assume your wolf does not already have this archetype so acquiring it on your wolf would require either retraining it with the new archetype or dismissing your current one for one that has the archetype (assuming of course that your GM allows it).

The Exchange

A Flying Ointment is indeed 2250. It grants overland flight for 9 hours. If all you are looking for is an occasional way to get off the ground for the duration of a combat, then an oil of fly is only 750 gp each (lasts 5 minutes). This is what most melee PCs carry around as an emergency consumable.

Unless you are using air walk, which specifically says that mounts can be trained to use the spell as a trick, you will need to push your mount with Handle Animal (or work with your GM to make a custom trick).

Thanks for the suggestions. On top of that I found out that Ultimate Wilderness added "Receive Spell" as a DC 25 Handle Animal training option, so it isn't just restricted to air walk.

Also I found out that lesser wings of flying require the physical push of a button to work (no command word or anything), so that might be a good RAW way to achieve flight.

Air Step:T2{personal}
Sky steed:T3(Pal)
Fly:T3
Air Walk:T4
Overland Flight:T5
Polymorph:T5 {a bit high level}

probably the practical answer is to wait until you can upgrade the companion into something with a fly speed or afford a mount with a fly speed. Some GMs restrict available mounts to (CharLvl)HD.

Restrict the mounts by level? That seems unfair. A lot of the classes that have mounts specifically already have a restricted list.

in case 'available' doesn't do it. Horses or common mounts are the exception at first level.

If you want to expand horses in your Home Game check out Homebrew: Purchased Mounts thread, 2015.

Ah, ok. Something you buy, not something the class gives.
