How does Crafter's Eyepiece work?

Rules Discussion

Alright hivemind... I need your help with something. This magic item makes no sense, and best I can find, Paizo hasn't responded on how it works. So I come to you as a desperate Crafter looking for an answer.

CRAFTER'S EYEPIECE:
" This rugged metal eyepiece etched with square patterns is designed to be worn over a single eye. Twisting the lens reveals a faint three-dimensional outline of an item you plan to build or repair, with helpful labels on the component parts. While worn, this eyepiece gives you a +1 item bonus to Crafting checks. When you Repair an item, increase the Hit Points restored by 15 per proficiency rank instead of 10. "

Now this is confusing because this is the wording for the Repair action:

CRIT SUCCESS: You restore 10 Hit Points to the item, plus an additional 10 Hit Points per proficiency rank you have in Crafting (a total of 20 HP if you’re trained, 30 HP if you’re an expert, 40 HP if you’re a master, or 50 HP if you’re legendary).

SUCCESS: You restore 5 Hit Points to the item, plus an additional 5 per proficiency rank you have in Crafting (for a total of 10 HP if you are trained, 15 HP if you’re an expert, 20 HP if you’re a master, or 25 HP if you’re legendary).

It appears that the "10 HP per rank" restored mentioned in Crafter's Eyepiece only applys to a Crit Success (and regular success only gives an extra 5 HP per rank)

So does this item not do anything for a basic Success? Or does it increase ALL successes by 5 per rank? Making Crit Success 10 + 15 per rank, and Success 5 + 10 per rank?

Horizon Hunters

It's an issue I've brought up in the past but I don't think they noticed... I think it's only supposed to increase by 5 per rank, but when they wrote it they thought the crit success was the standard success.

Liberty's Edge

I think the conservative reading would be that the item was written with the critical success result in mind. Thus the bonus per proficiency rank would be 15 rather than 10 on a critical. And I would cut it in half for the standard success : 7 rather than 5.

Now, making it +5 on a standard success and +10 on a critical might be OP or not. I do not know about that.

Or just consider that it turns a standard success in a critical success. (Which I would do were I the GM).

I just do +5

I think they simply made a mistake when reading the repair entry.

I think they meant to give a standard +5

So on a success

Trained 10 > 15
Expert 15 > 20
Master 20 > 25
Legendary 20 > 25

Double on crit

In doing this, you ignore the "per proficiency rank" of the item's description though.

Yeah, its an item I wish they would errata since I don't really know whats intended. I typically just buy it for my crafters for the item bonus, instead of getting multiple sterling tools (still need multiple non-sterling to avoid the penalty for not having proper tools) and just ignore the repair bonus for now.

Personally, I suspect the repair rules were changed after the item was written up and no one remembered to actually change the eyepiece.

It would be nice to get an official clarification on how this item is supposed to work...

FYI, my thread on this topic from so, so, so long ago: https://paizo.com/threads/rzs42u9e?How-Much-Do-You-Repair-With-A-Crafters-E yepiece.
No conclusions reached, of course, so it's not particularly helpful...

Yeah, I usually do the same. But unfortunately, the Inventor class now exists with it's construct companion that has to be Repaired rather than healed... so having a bonus to Repair amounts is suddenly a far more pressing need in my life.

If you play a shield block user, bonus to repair has been important since the CRB.
