You currently are or formerly were a professional-level athlete with highly specialized physical skills. You might be a member of your region’s sports team, chosen for your exceptional strength or finesse, or maybe you competed in individual events requiring exemplary endurance. Your prowess may have already led you to travel extensively for competitions, or you might still be an up-and-coming star. Either way, your impressive physical capabilities enable you to make a living as a professional competitor.

If I am a professional-level athlete, does this mean with this theme, I can use my associated skill in lieu of a profession check for day-job?

I would say yes, by a reading of the above text from the book, but I am looking for an official ruling for clarification.

The way I am reading this (not saying I am necessarily right) is that your day job check would still be something like profession:sportsball or profession:powerlifter, etc much like a character with the roboticist background would roll profession:roboticist rather than engineering or computers. However, sometimes the special skills of your profession might substitute for the skill in a scenario, like rolling profession:marathoner on checks to see how quickly you can do a long distance footrace.

No. You would still need to take ranks in Profession: (your sport) to make a day job check.

From the CRB, bounty hunters “track people for money” but that doesn’t mean they can use Survival for day jobs. Mercenaries are “a hired gun” but they can’t use Athletics for a day job. (Those are the skills those themes provide, respectively.)

The challenge here is that Profession is keyed to a mental ability (INT, WIS, CHA), not a physical ability (STR, DEX, CON).

Interesting point.

I was hoping that the theme would allow such a change, to allow for a physical stat to be used as the stat for profession.

I don't see that anywhere.

I believe this is also the criticism of everyone with ranks in Life Science or Physical Science, since there is specifically no "Profession (Scientist)".

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Professor Quid the Science Squid has Profession: SCIENCE! but it's Charisma based, since it involves hosting a children's show (*shakes tentacle at Dr. B's Science Jubilee*).
