Someone that plays at my local store has a Warcat as an inquisitor animal companion. The animal companion does extremely well and I decided to look into whether or not it was legal for Society play.
I think the Warcat is not legal based on what I read on additional resources. It seems the Player Companion it is introduced only has two legal animal companions and the Warcat is not one of them. If this is true, how does one go about alerting them to the fact they need to fix their character?

Tactfully.
Oftentimes someone might not know an option they're using isn't legal. But *how* you approach *them* isn't necessarily something *we* can advise you on, since we don't know you and we don't know them.
It could be something as simple as asking, "Oh, hey, what book is your Companion from? I've been thinking of making a Druid myself and yours seems really cool!"
Or if you don't feel comfortable addressing it yourself, you can ask your local organizer and/or your next GM to take a look instead.
Messages by carrier pigeon, Post-Its with letters cut out from newspaper, and strings of alphabet beads are not recommended.

The good news is that since Cat, big, is one of the broaded definitions of animal companion in terms of looks, Cringer there won't need a makeover just a stat adjustment should the player not have a boon.
Sort of? Warcats are only cats in the loosest sense of the word.
