Yes where are you planning on playing ?
My understanding is that there is a short section in the CRB with setting info, that might be enough to give them the broad strokes.

Pathfinder Wiki is a wonderful place and has a history section.
Long story short... The highly advanced Azlanti humans were fighting with aliens from another planet called Elves. Then a strange gigantic meteorite struck the world and practically wiped the Azlanti off the planet.
The Elves saw this coming and teleported back to their planet.
The Dwarves who were underground in the Darklands until this point took this as a sign to head for sky, but the Orcs were in their way. So, they fought a constant war with the Orcs as they chased them skyward.
One of the last Azlanti, a powerful wizard named Aroden decided to make a city called Absalom out of this gigantic meteorite... this "star stone" and raised it from the ocean. Upon doing so he became a god. Yay! He also built a gigantic cathedral to house this Starstone. And anyone else who successfully did challenges for the Starstone also became a god.
The Elves ended up coming back. Dwarves started trading with topsiders. Orcs terrorized the surface of the planet. Humanity started doing pretty well. Then all of a sudden Aroden died (rumors say he ate bad sushi). Poof. This screwed everything up. Lots of countries started warring with each other. Beasts started being beastly.
And here we are.
I might have skimmed over some things.

I admit I did not know the Azlanti fought the Elves prior to Starfall. I will have to read into that
Why did the Elves not resume fighting humanity when they got back? Did they mistime their return and humanity was too prevalent? Or is this where Treerazer comes in?
(I will go to the links but I thought I would float the question anyway just in case there is a flash card answer)

I'm not sure why they didn't fight the humans when they came back, but I think the Azlanti were the aggressors in this instance. There's something about it in Ruins of Azlant, iirc.

Some additional tidbits that help in case you go north with your party
Taldor was like...f+##ing huge, from where it is now till cheliax everything was taldor, but then Cheliax said: nah, we're good, we don't need no sugardaddy - poof, insert cheliax
Some time later the Americans of the inner sea emerged, thinking of freedom, eagles, democracy and stuff - bam, insert andoran
Not sure if it was before or after andorans indipendence day, but the now ruling familiy of cheliax became rulers with the help of hell on terms turning devil worship to the main religion there
Oh and don't forget Quadira south of whatsleftof-Taldor, they constantly invade and go full Ali-Baba on Taldan behinds whenever possible
In case your party goes south instead of north the probably land in Osirion, that s*+% is straight up Egypt, same gods, Pyramids a Pharaoh and some people are probably walking strange there, you know how the song goes
If your party has clerics, champions and other faithfull folk avoid Rahadoum, 'the kingdom of man' which, at best, stabs the party as soon as they arrive
Random fact:
Elves and Dwarves DON'T want to permanently kill each other, even though they are neighbours - they just don't have any particular interest in each others lands
Kyonin is kinda Xenophobic - on a lucky day outsiders will be kicked out, on a unlucky day they first get an arrow somewhere
3 exceptions: greengold, which is a tradeport with human folks, Erages - where all those poor half-blood schmucks are stored and Omesta - Gnomes settled there while the elves we're afk, hiding from the meteorite, as they came back they were like 'lol, they still stuck to our rules...let's leave em there, funny little guys'
Fun facts about the gods:
Asmodeus: that guy is old as balls, one of the first beings in existance - also basically created humans, both is not exactly largely known - also probably patreon deity of lawyers, try your luck getting out of a deal with him, I double friggin dare ya
also he uses some of the souls he burns up in hellfire to keep rovagug in check
Calistria: Her temples double possibly as brothel (where you can get some juicy informations), as thieves guild or sometimes as assassins guild. She is also worshipped by elves as goddes of freedom
Cayden: Was really drunk and went 'hold my beer, gonna do the starstone test' - came back 3 days later as god without any idea how the f$@* he did that - his herald was a prostitute and a good friend of him
Desna: favorite of the developers, perfect for adventurers
Erastil: imo boring af, that's about it
Gozreh: according to giants he is mother and father of shelyn...wtf?
Iomedae: former aroden follower, basically new goddess of mankind - second of three gods who went starstone on divinity
Lamashtu: killed desnas mentor and stile the domain of animals, also nightmare goodess - theres a big beatdown whenever they meet
Norgorber: third starstone god, nobody knows what the heck he was doing before that
Rovagug: Hates by definition everything, including his followers - still grants them power, though - btw, golarion is basically his prison - hates especially:
Sarenrae: goody two shoes, healing, undead smiting, second chances and the sun - makes a pretty sympathic goddess imo
Shelyn: looks always attractive to whoever she appears to, goddes of love and art - has an evil half, brother and is in a relationship with sarenrae AND desna - is also liked by basically EVERYONE, with the exception of rovagug, just can't hold a conversation that one
Urgathoa: died and got better, she was waiting to be judged, thought to herself 'girls just wanna have fun', left the queue and became a goddess - does whatever she wants basically, if she wants to eat a baby, she is going to eat a baby
Zon-Kuthon: this is about as far as f@!#ed up family relationships go, half brother of shelyn and probably more evil, sadistic, and f%#*ed up then urgathoa, lamashtu and asmodeus together (possible 'only' possessed by an outter god)

That was confirmed by James Jacob to be a mistake from freelancers that brought the xenophobia from other generic settings. Will be retconned to be only a pass during (and some time before) the events of Second Darkness, and rectified after the organisation that was driving that xenophobia changed hands to be under the control of less... xenophobe leaders.
Should be in the Pathfinder Friday stream about "Elves vs Demons"
BTW, the Elves are now facing a demon infestation problem, so many elves on Golarion hate or are particularly trained to fight demons. In particular, Treerazer is a "Ridley-like" (Metroid) exiled demon(-lord?) that have his only wish the complete destruction of elves and corruption of nature.

It's hard to summarize the world info, and I don't think any player should have encyclopedic knowledge of it, nor do they need it, to play. A breakdown of the current situation with maybe some info dating back a few decades within their relevant area and surrounds, sure.
For example, Cheliax has been under Infernal control for...what, fifty years now? That's fairly historically recent, before their patron god died it was a fairly prosperous human nation, and this all happened within the lifetime of some Elves and other longer-lived races.
But for a human who was born in that nation... they might not have all those details.
I'll echo what others have said, though; the wiki's great, and I saw there was already a link. And in the cpre book releasing soon, and the Lost Omens World Guide, there will be more, so you have time to do some reading if you like!

Thanks kindly for the spot! This provides a good example to my previous comment, too. I've been GMing PF1 for nigh on a decade and I've yet to play a game centered around Cheliax, or play with a character who was really involved with it. Now, if needed I'd go brush up on it and the history, but until then I get by fairly well on second-hand knowledge.

Almost a hundred years, I think, for Cheliax. It came into Thrune control some time around 4636 AR.
In a cmpaing I GMed was an elf who never was anywhere near impressed with 'Abby', as she always called queen Abroigal Thrune, she with her whole 'upstart family' (from her point of view)

I just stumbled across this. Stubbed my metaphoric toe too. Hope it helps.
First there was the word, and the word was with James.Then Lisa Stephens said “Make it, so!”
And James did, with help from Paizonians, high level Creators.
Golarion became a thing, a world whose name, if you took all the letters out and put them all back in, in a different order, spells:
“Origonal”. Which it is.
Ten ....years passed. Many adventures were had and tropes smooshed.
Wars happened and unhappened. Books were published.
Another war happened, only this time it was the Eddishun War.
Voila! Pee’eff Tû was born. It is your friend. OK!
And finally Lizardfolk were a thing. Oh and goblins.
Plus things have changed, rather than staying samey. Which is a thing that happens.
Or, as someone said once: “Time is nature’s way of stopping everything happening at once”.
Just like PF2 is the multiverse’s way of having adventures, only the same-but-different.
And the people rejoiced. Except those that didn’t, which is sad. For them.
I choose to move forward, except when I want to play a PF1 game until I don’t want to any more.
Which may happen later. Or not.

If you're looking for the setting specific to the second edition era, Paizo put out a recent series of blog posts on the different regions.
But because of how much of a kitchen sink Golarion is, your players probably just need to learn the region you're gonna be playing in. Nirmathas doesn't have much to do with Varisia, for example.
