Way to safely unmake an animated undead?

Advice

Quick question here. If a corpse created with Animate Dead is destroyed in battle it can't be animated again.

Is there any way to safely undo an Animate Dead that leaves the body so that it can be Animated again?

Like if I have a Skeleton that I want to change into a Bloody Skeleton, is there a way to undo the old spell so I can recast the spell on it?

Afraid not. Not that I could find, and I went through all undead focused spells I have access to in Herolab (which is most of them). It is possible I missed something but unlikely.

As a DM, I'd just let you recast the spell, use more onyx and just upgrade the bloody thing.

Agree with DeathlessOne, but a potential workaround might be to kill the skeleton, raise it from the dead, kill it again, then reanimate it. It'd have to be a very special skeleton to be worth all that of course.

It would have to be a very special undead indeed since you'd have to use a Resurrection or True Resurrection spell.

Other spells that might work (but would require DM approval) would be polymorph any object and clone. Using either spell it might be possible to create a fresh corpse that's a duplicate of the original corpse you animated.

If you have the time to do some spell research, a Deanimate Undead spell that affects only an undead under your control seems like an eminently reasonable very low-level spell. Hm, might want to restrict it specifically to an undead that you made, to avoid shenanigans with temporary takeovers.

He's got sentimental value.

Instead of a deanimate dead spell, why not a rereanimate dead spell that lets you turn one undead into another?

You can call the spell Upgrade Undead.

/cevah

You Pathfinders! For naming spells Ars Magica is the way. There this spell would be called something like Sublime Reformation of the Undead Spirit. Tell me there's not more poetry in that.

what about - Vecna's re-Animation of the animated dead into slightly better undead?

I think its important to keep things short and snappy.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So how long until we get Awaken Undead? Something to turn our mindless servants into a decent conversationalist?

Am I spending too much time in the crypt? Maybe I need to get out more.

I went looking for that exact spell, having Awaken Animal in mind. Apparently, it's already in D&D, but not in Pathfinder currently.
