A Gruesome Question: What Skill to use for amputating a Celestial's limbs?

Rules Questions

For the squeamish, look away. A disturbing scenario follows.

I have a Half-Balor Antipaladin who serves as the Big Bad of a homebrew campaign who will lay seige to Andoran. Towards the end of the campaign, he manages to capture Talmandor. During Talmandor's subsequent imprisonment, he is tortured to limit his strength. One of the tortures he's subjected to is that his wings are amputated, leaving his arms/hands still intact.

It's mostly a narrative thing by this point, but I'm genuinely curious: What Skill is used to amputate limbs in general, and amputating a Celestial specifically. Heal comes to mind right off the bat, but the Survival Skill is used to harvest meat from animals. I'm considering the Survival skill because the Half-Balor has an interest in eating the wings of Celestials. So I'm curious as to which Skill is the appropriate one for the situation.

From a historicsl POV, I eould say Profession (Butcher), Profession (Surgeon), Profession (Executioner) or Profession (Barber).

Surgeon (or Bonesaw, in the battlefield surgery of the old day era) goes without explanation. Executioner were often also responsible to torture the prisoner for information. Even if they are not animal, a butcher knows enough about anatomy to be able to remove limb. Barbers may seem odd, until you remember that thry used to also fu surgery and dentistry, so they eould also be able to remove limbs,

The Half-Balor has a Vivisectionist Alchemist who can do the Profession (Surgeon) Skill.

Heal.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Interesting historical fact: As executioners were often also torturers they would develop a sophisticated understanding of human anatomy (information was also frequently exchanged between members of the close-knit executioner communities) which in turn made them capable doctors. The famous 17th century German executioner Franz Schmidt noted that during his career he'd treated over 15,000 people as a doctor but only executed/tortured/disfigured 700-800 people.

Strictly speaking, amputation doesn't take any skill, as long as you have a sharp axe. "Hold still!" WHACK! WHACK! "Done! ...Hey, stop bleeding to death!"

The tricky part is avoiding killing them or doing more damage than you mean to. That means Heal.

Another vote for the Heal Skill

Outside of professions I agree the heal check.
At a pinch you could use the Survival skill I guess but it would be 1/2 ranks and a -5 probably.

Guess the Heal Skill was the way to go. I was aware that it was the case with Humanoids and other PC races, but the anatomy of a Celestial/any true Outsider is so different I was wondering if another Skill was more appropriate.

Thanks for all the input!

Heal would be the primary skill, but other skills may allow a circumstance bonus. As Wuzzy-Wuzzy states the skill would be more for making sure the amputee survives the procedure.

Primarily heal. The anatomy may be different, but the ability to perform surgery (essentially what removing a part of the body would entail) is definitely covered by the Heal Skill. Maybe a bonus or requirement of knowing celestial anatomy through the Knowledge(Planes) skill.

The Half-Balor Antipaladin may have to oversee the procedure in that case. His build gives him Knowledge (Planes) as a Class Skill.

Why have a skill check for a narrative device strictly between NPCs? Just do it.

It's not something I actually need to DO as the GM. I'm just genuinely curious as to what check I would have to use if I was a player. For narrative's sake, it just happens. In regards to which NPCs are capable of which Skill, it helps flesh out the actual scenario when it comes time for the PCs to reach the scene. I.E: When Talmandor tells the PCs what happened to him when they see him in his current state, I know what to tell the PCs as the GM.
