More specifically, they break on the second dent.
Yeah, any weapon, armor, or shield that does not specify otherwise can take 1 dent safely and breaks if it takes a second. Sturdy Shields can take an extra dent safely and a Shield Ally Paladin can take an extra 2 dents safely (and those stack so a Shield Ally Paladin with a Sturdy Shield can take 4 dents on his shield, it doesn't break until the 5th!)
And any broken item that takes enough damage to be dented again is destroyed.

True enough, I hadn't considered you couldn't raise the shield. I just figured you could raise it but with no benefit beyond being able to desperately shield block again. This makes more sense though.
Which does beg the question, does the Swift Block Cabochon allow you to use Shield Block with a broken shield?
