What would be some good guards / minions for a dragon's lair?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

For a young evil dragon, kobolds are the most likely choice, but what about older dragons? I like the idea of an ancient white dragon with a lot of necromancy spells that kills a tribe of frost giants and zombifies all of them (although I'm not sure if white dragons hating frost giants is a thing in Pathfinder like in DND does anyone know?)

Skeletons are much better than zombies.

Consider (magical) traps. Group based triggers are out at your level (the PCs will be too flying to hit them), but there's still a lot of fun options. You can either use fire traps (the white dragon is intelligent enough to know anyone serious about killing it will buff with ice resistance) and/or auto resting ice ones the white dragon just ignores and tries to trigger with its move action or lure the PCs into hitting during the fight.

Evil NPCs. Humans and other races in Golarion have been know to worship powerful elder dragons. These magical monsters could easily establish a cult of dedicated followers with all sorts of player class levels.

A fight between the party (fighter, Wizard, Cleric, and Ranger) that all the sudden has to fight a reflection of themselves (Sorcerer, Slayer, Barbarian, Oracle) makes for a very very very interesting and balanced fight.

Honestly, playing against a diverse and equivalently powerful opponent makes combat a total curve-ball as opposed to mowing through an entire dungeon full of frost giants. And it's really fun too.

The only probably is playing 4 full PC like enemies can be really overwhelming for a GM, since their stat blocks can get overwhelming at high levels.

A particularly randy dragon might have a number of half-dragons about...

That's actually a pretty cool idea. Particularly if said dragon had many, err.. partners, so some half dragons would be humanoid and others would be something really weird like half dragon brain collectors.

A harem of beefy dragon disciple, ah, "playmates".

Half-black(or green)-dragon gelatinous cube. It qualifies for a fly speed.

A jello dragon. lol I'd kinda like to see that.

Perhaps some wild animals like wolves could do the trick?

Does the 'old dragon' know simulacrum yet? (Normally, 7th level spells are only available to Great Wyrm White Dragons, but a few levels of Sorcerer training out of curriculum can let a younger White cut ahead...)

Six or so half-strength copies of itself would make pretty scary 'guards', and they are pretty loyal. Lesser simulacra are less of both (less potent and less loyal), but available even sooner.

Particularly on-theme for a white dragon, to be shaping his loyal minions out of ice and snow...

Red dragon with iron golems as minions. Breathing fire damages the intruders and heals the golems, win-win.

How would a half dragon ooze come into existence? Oozes reproduce asexually as far as we know (usually by splitting) so I don't think you could make one the old-fasioned way. That said, perhaps a dragon could create some spell or ritual to magically make one (presumably requiring a scale or other body part from the dragon as a component)

Simple. The ooze constantly absorbs dragon parts and only dragon parts until the inherent magic that dragons possess infuses the ooze to the point that it becomes a dragon while still being an ooze.
