They do console, something I think a lot of people forget. Everyone processes deaths, grief and loss differently. For me even typed words on a messageboard hold meaning. Thank you!

Every time I think of the emptiness ahead, it crushes my heart. I try to focus on what I have now instead, but that comfort is denied you. I'm sorry Turin, I only hope that the ache dulls eventually.
Goober was survived by his cat-wife Missy aka Princess Demandypants and two children Gator and Blinky. My wife and I make five now instead of six. We have plenty to focus on.
It's the little things that one had become accustomed to that are no longer there that produce the aches. The reliable wake-up mews and scratching. The deep rumbling purr that was his alone. Watching endless foolishness and mayhem in Fallout 4 or lap time while watching a movie at home. Hand-feeding of people food treats that he actually liked. And so on.
I don't see life as empty ahead (well, not yet). Rather that once my span here has concluded that I have my BPF to look forward to reuniting with once more along with all of the friends, family and pets that have passed their mortal coils before me.
I'm so sorry for your loss, Turin. If my dog died I would be absolutely freaking devastated beyond my ability to articulate.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I know for me, losing some one that was close to you suddenly (like I did Duke) sticks with you. You just hope they felt...loved and knew that you did your best.

There's the nasty, current, phase of regrets. The things that only hindsight reveals that one could have done a bit more of, a bit better and the knowledge that you cannot adjust what has passed one iota.
We loved each other as only a Best Pet Friend and their chosen person does. I have no doubts about that.

My puppers, Hunter, is PTFO at my feet on my bed. I bought a king-sized just so I could keep sharing it with him as he got bigger without the enormous bastard taking up half of it. He's never slept a night alone since I got him. The rare times I was not home for work, he's been with my girlfriend.
He's a mixed breed (I only do mixed breeds - fewer genetic defects, diseases, and the like - I also almost exclusively do Humane Society animals), about the size of a chocolate lab, but a lil more muscular, with a brindle color. He's half black mouth cur, some part labrador, and we assume there's some pit mixed in there. He's already the size of my girlfriend's boxer/pit mix, and at about 10 months he's still growing!
He's a big ass heavy cuddler who thinks he's still a lap dog, but he has a scary loud bark and makes an excellent guard dog. Once I was tickling my girlfriend and she pushed me away in front of him and he instantly interposed himself between us, not growling, but just staring up at her intensely. I can only imagine what he'd have done if it were anyone he hadn't known since he was six weeks old. Nobody can even make it near the stairs up to our place without him losing his mind barking.
Hunter's so great.
I love dogs. Cats are nice, too, but I'm allergic, or I'd totally have a cat as well. I also enjoyed my ferret when I had him.
Animals rock. They're so much better than humans.

Sorry for your loss Turin! It's never easy losing a family member.
Our dog is a beagle, he's ten now, currently he's decided he can do a better job keeping my feet warm then the blankets could, which he has stolen.

The fact that I can readily imagine your beagle curled up on your feet after dragging the blankets off of them gave me a much-needed chuckle, Captain. :)

My late uncle, who was a curmudgeon-with-a-heart-of-gold, once said, "Loving animals sets yourself up for a lifetime of heartache, 'cause you know you're going to outlive 'em all... except maybe the last one. But the joy outweighs the loss."

Just got back from picking up my new glasses. Now I have to adjust to them. My prescription changed quite a bit since my last checkup, which was 2 years ago.
Friday was my GF's bday. We had to go to the laundry mat to dry 3 loads of laundry because my dryer died. What a great birthday for her!

I went to work, but there wasn't a vast amount to do.
I went to Wednesday HEMA, did a bit of sabre, then taught sword & cloak for a bit.
There is sweet chili sauce on my woolly hat, which I could do without.

I found my Krusty Krab stocking hat!
I went back to work on Monday, (after my so called vacation, which was good if far too short) and repowered up my stage dimmer system.
ANNNNnnnnnnd it all went downhill from there. >_<
3 days later, I have officially declared the dimmer rack brain DOA. And sent it off for repair. I drove a 3.5 hour round trip to borrow a brain from neighboring town/college. (Again, they did this for me LAST time this happened to me!) ;P (I owe this guy big time!)
Short version, this is the third dimmer rack brain I have had to repair in under 3 years. AND the wall control panel (for those who are unversed in using the light board) is dead. I MAY be able to salvage it, IF I feel brave enough to take 12v power supplies from one dimmer rack and transfer them to the other one,...?!? We'll have to see about that one,... :P
So yeah, I have officially informed my boss that I can't put any more band aids on this aging lighting system. Just maybe THIS will move them to upgrade my equipment NOW instead of waiting another 10-20 years?!?

On the "what are you doing today" question - after my new job went bust from a major anxiety reaction, I've been keeping my mind busy working on a Legend of the Five Rings story.
Gaming is my "safe place". It's amazing how much it can slow the gears down and let me not think about how s~+~ty I feel...
