Warrior Poet interaction with UC Rogue

Rules Questions

If a character starts with one level of WP samurai he gets finesse with katana, see below.

Would this allow to get dex to damage from UC rogue?

The Samurai is only a 1 level dip.

Graceful Warrior (Ex): The warrior poet gains Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat and can apply its benefits to glaives, katanas, and naginatas as if they were light weapons. This does not alter the weapons’ properties for the purposes of any other effects

Quote:

Finesse Training (Ex)

At 1st level, a rogue gains Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat. In addition, starting at 3rd level, she can select any one type of weapon that can be used with Weapon Finesse (such as rapiers or daggers). Once this choice is made, it cannot be changed. Whenever she makes a successful melee attack with the selected weapon, she adds her Dexterity modifier instead of her Strength modifier to the damage roll. If any effect would prevent the rogue from adding her Strength modifier to the damage roll, she does not add her Dexterity modifier. The rogue can select a second weapon at 11th level and a third at 19th level.

There's couple different arguments that can be made here.

1. Finesse Training is an effect that allows you to apply dex to damage to a weapon that is finesseable. Since the properties of the weapon don't change for other effects, you can't apply it.

2. Graceful Warrior only keeps them from being treated as light weapons for other effects, making them one-handed finesseable weapons. This allows you to apply Finesse Training.

I lean towards the second argument, since Graceful Warrior only changes their handedness property. And since Finesse Training doesn't care about handedness, but only whether Weapon Finesse applies to that weapon, it should work.

I agree with willuwontu. Finesse Training applies to (one type of) weapons that an be used with Weapon Finesse. For the Warrior Poet, that includes Katanas et al.

Excellent,thank you :-)

I'm going to agree, but with the stipulation that you have to take the classes in an order that grants Graceful Warrior before Finesse Training, so that you are being trained in the use in order.

Graceful warrior was written to be as restrictive as possible. (After all the problems caused by Bladed Brush, I didn't want there to be any ambiguity.) So when it says "This does not alter the weapons’ properties for the purposes of any other effects"... that unfortunately includes the rogue's finesse training, which treats the listed weapons as if graceful warrior did not exist.

That said, it's unlikely to cause any problems if houseruled to work. I recommend talking it over with your GM. Alternatively, graceful warrior is fully compatible with Slashing Grace, which would save you a few rogue levels. ^_^

that’s how it read to me, but there’s enough counterintuitive rulings in a FAQ somewhere I didn’t want to comment in case there was such an existing ruling.
