Mae West would be my first choice.

I bet FDR would've been a great father figure for me.

Vlad the Impaler can be the cool uncle, if only so I could call him Uncle Vladdy, which I'm sure he would be totally cool with.

Never disappoint Uncle Vladdy.

I am just too visually oriented to fantasize about any past person that I can't see a photograph of or (better yet) a film of, so my choices would probably be limited to silent film stars like Josephine Baker and Anna Mae Wong.

Sigmund Freud. But only because he reminds me of my mother.

Grand Lodge

Charlie Chaplin would be an interesting friend.

I bet Jim Morrison would be an interesting casual acquaintance.

I would like to meet Immanuel Kant, but he hated meeting people and found the thought of meeting people to be very stressful.

I would enjoy being pals with Sylvia Plath or Charlotte Bronte or Virginia Wolfe - actually that would be a great group for a weekly girls night

Jim Henson - the kindly life mentor

Douglas Adams - the clever life mentor

Robin Williams - the savvy career mentor

Hunter S. Thompson - the moral/epistemic support-figure

George Carlin - the combination of the prior two

Bruce Lee - Sensei.

Emperor Julian the Apostate/Philosopher - I'd advise him to take it a bit easier with the military campaigns.

Aleister Crowley - the fellow traveler

H. P. Lovecraft - the creative collaborator

Albert Einstein - "I want to know God's thoughts - the rest is details."

Without doubt Julie d'Aubigny (better know as Mademoiselle Maupin)...

Every birthday it's the same damn thing. Uncle Vladdy gives me a present. It's a human head. He says "That'll help you get... ahead!" and laughs like he hasn't made that joke for like, a million birthdays already. Gah. Such a dork.

BTW I meant like a romantic relationship. Should have been more clear.

So, because I'm a nerd (nnneeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrd), I have, just, like, a ton of questions about how this is supposed to work, mechanically, I mean - do I go there, does the person come here, do we just meet in a null-space, or chat mind-to-mind, or... look, there are just so many cool options!

I'm guessing it's just supposed to be one person. I'm going to intentionally limit it to a face-to-face interaction form of "relationship" rather than any familial bond (though proving myself a direct lineage of various famous people is kind of tempting). Further, to stave off questions of "how it works," I'll shed any nebulous "other-realm" and presuppose we are either in the modern world or the past. As I'm happily married, I'm uninterested in the romantic format. And that just leaves a whole world of people.

To that end, I've got, like, a metric ton of sorting to do.

First and foremost, I would want (in principle) to go see most Biblical figures, because I'm a nerd like that. That said, I'm sick, like, all the daggum time, and I really don't think it's a good idea to bring my super-viruses into their times, nor to bring their immune systems into our times, nor to expose me to diseases I've not had vaccinations against because they don't exist in that form anymore... and so on. So, that limits it greatly to those people that can cure disease. And I've already got a rock-solid relationship with one of those... so, eh.

Similar logic weeds out most ancient-world humans. Though, daggum, I'd love to meet the first people to build a building. Or the first government. Or the first - aaaaggghhh so many cool things!

Most more modern characters that come to mind aren't terribly interesting - I mean, they are, but I'm less enthused about the idea of hanging out with them, either in their setting, or my own. The other side of the coin is, of course, even those who are universally acclaimed might have severe issues in our world, and I'd mostly be seen as a lunatic (a literally-diseased lunatic, at that) in theirs. Still, I'd probably bring them here - over-all it's likely the best outcome.

Further, even if they'd previously died of old age, I'm presuming an effect much like a cyclic reincarnation spell bringing them back in a young adult body.

I probably wouldn't choose anyone tooooooooo modern, as their actually kind of too-close-for-comfort in terms of cultural/political/social fallout from their life and actions, even those who are deceased.

So let's park it back at three-hundred years (1718) or earlier. Ugh, notsomuch a fan (nothing wrong, per se, but it didn't quite grab me). Around then, let's see...

- the man in the iron mask would be intriguing
- Isaac Newton would be fascinating (his mind would be so daggum blown)
- Peter the Great could be interesting
- conversely, Sultan Ahmed III seemed pretty neat
- Iyasu I of Etheopia would honestly probably be the coolest dude from this era
- Emperor Nakamikado of Japan or Shogun Tokugawa Ienbo could be rather fascinating

So probably one of those.

If we go back to the 1600s, though...

HOLY CARP

- Miyamoto Musashi
- William Shakespear
- Elizabeth I of England
- John Napier
- Tokugawa Iyesu
- friggin' BACH
- Rembrandt
- John Bunyan
- Miguel friggin' de Cervantes Saavedra hisself
- Hobbes, Hooke, Boyle, still Newton, aaaaagggghhhhh

Look, we'll be here all day.

I'm just going to select, urg, ah...

1) Musashi
2) Shakespear
3) Elizabeth
4) Newton

1d4 ⇒ 1

... that one.

And/or Iyasu I of Etheopia. I mean, really. Dude seems pretty rockin' (though I honestly don't know enough about him - another reason I'd want a relationship).

(And if I could, I'd stave off the death of Shogun Tokugawa Ienbo long enough to allow negotiations to finish with Emperor Nakamikado of Japan to marry and unify the two lines. Just because that sounds rad. And, you know, just grabbing every great scientist for four hundred years and putting them together might, you know, be a dream of mine... dang it.)

Ugh, so many cool writers!

Oh! Gygax! Duh! Oh! H. G. Wells!

Arg! Sticking with my previous decision.

It seemed that way, but I ignored that because I'm disinterested.

Too late, it's been established!

It's better this way.

Eh... Rasputin why not?

because the bat is super annoying. But Rasputin does have some awesome dance moves so there is that.

Some that I would be curious about romantically, and some others.

Hedy Lamar
Richard Feynmann
Catherine Howard
Marie Curie
Judas Iscariot
Nikolai Tesla

Aargh, how to decide?

There is so much more to relationships than just the romantic ones. Most of the historical figures I admire I would not sully the connection with romance or sex - they are people who are better enjoyed intellectually than emotionally

But his singing is so bad, and, what's more, it's the worst song. I mean, just... just ugh.

What!? It was so rad and metal. What's not to like?

He was a cat that really was gone.

There is nothing metal, here. Literally just the worst.

Look, Johnathan Young is incredible in most every way, but he's only a man, dang it! You can't expect him to work a miracle!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Oh! Hey! It was Johnathan Young! Nice!

(I was just guessing.)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'll admit, of the two, it's the "not as horrible in every way" version. So there's that!

2 people marked this as a favorite.

That's all I'm willing to give it, though.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

DANG it.

I just realized this was the "If you could have a relationship with a historical person who would you pick?" thread, not the "I've always wanted one of my threads to be necromancied." thread. I would have condensed those to, like, one post, two, tops, had I realized - whoooooooooops. Too late to edit all that now, though!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Why would we discuss Rasputin on the other thread and get off track?

We were busy with another argument! If there is one thing to say about that thread it's topicality.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Wait, did the thread about having a relationship with a historical person just become a necromancy thread? This got dark...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well how else are you supposed to have a relationship with a historical person if not necromancy?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Where there's a will (and s*~%loads of electricity) there's a way.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

It's not necromancy. It's post-mortem love.

It's conjuration actually. Although I never got why spells to bring back the dead aren't necromancy.
