Where do animals go when they die?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

They are always neutral so do they all go to the Boneyard? Personally I think they should reincarnate, possibly as the same animal, possibly something else (it would be random).

Into the ground?

All dogs go to heaven.

Animals do have souls (see soul trade) even if their souls are incapable of good or evil. Therefore they join the River of Souls and reach Outer Sphere. Since they cannot be judged based on ethical content of their souls, they need to be parcelled out in another way.

I image some kind of auction, where agents from various planes bid to get the animal petitioners they want. For example, citizens of Axis could value horses and other beasts of burden, azatas may favor colorful birds, and devils the animals that can serve as guardians, etc.

In time, the fate of these animal petitioners would be the same as the fate of sentient ones - they would either turn into true outsiders, or their essence would be absorbed by the plane itself.

Hell Hounds are also a thing.

Speaking of which though I've never stated it out. I figure there should be an alternate hell hound called a dammatian. Physically it would be similar to a hell hound but it would be black with white spots all over it.....

Speaking of which, I've heard that all chihuahuas are fiendish chihuahuas. Anyone can confirm?

Well, they don't go to heaven where the angels fly...

They go to a lake of butter and fry.

The debate here mentioned seems to be about the nomenclature. The point is, there's undeniable some spiritual part to the animals, and we can safely assume that as with the souls of sentient beings, it orginates on the Positive Energy Plane and joins the River of Souls after the creature's death. Whether we call it a soul or not is inconsequential.

I have to say I don't really like the idea of them being "sold". What if a completely innocent dog gets sent to Hell (and likely tortured and abused)? Yes Pharisma is neutral but she is supposed to be a just god and that doesn't sound like justice by any stretch of the imagination.

Here I see adifference etween Lawfukl Good Justice and Neutral justice.

Lawful Good judge, you're right, would never send an innocent creature to hell, because that would be cruel. But Neutral judging doesn't work like that. It's more like assesing beings on their qualities (here: the content of good or evil in their souls), and checking on what shelf they should be put.

Pharasma doesn't care if your soul is tainted with evil because you did a lot of evil in your life, or because some deal that your family made with devils that damned the whole family line - if you have evil in your soul, you're going down. Is it justice?

That's why I think the animals, whose spirit do not accumulate good or evil, would all be treated equally, whether they were a dog trained to attack peasants, or a dog trained to guide the blind. Before Pharasma they are all similar blobs of quintesence, witho no determined destination.

That being said, the market is just the first thing that came to my mind when I thought about a True Neutral way of deling with them. There may be others, better. But they shouldn't favor Law above Chaos or Good above the Evil.

Elysium, Nirvana (especially), or Purgatory seem most likely for animals. The Fey World may also be a possibility.

Source? Or is this a personal interpretation?

Pathfinder Comic: Spiral of Bones shows how Pharasma's Court works from up close.

Oh. Awesome. Now I can hate Pharasma even more.

Some animals may also go into the barking madness of Limbo.

I believe you are correct. However, when they die, they become Larvae -- vicious maggots with Chihuahua heads.
