Ioun Keneticist question......

Rules Questions

So the Ioun Kineticist....

Under Ioun focus say's "An ioun kineticist’s telekinetic blast always sends one or more of her ioun stones to strike her foes and immediately return*, and her wild talents typically manifest as her ioun stones moving or spinning to create fields of energy. This alters elemental focus."

Under Telekinetic blast, it states "If the attack hits, the target and the thrown object each take the blast’s damage."

I assume this ability protects the Ioun stones from damage in a manner similar to Telekinetic Boomerang ? Otherwise your Ioun stones would be destroyed in short order.....

They take the damage still, note that hardness applies though.

Quote:
Ioun Cloud (Su): An ioun kineticist forms a powerful bond with three dull gray ioun stones, referred to as her ioun cloud. She begins play with these stones at no cost, and she gains a bond with an additional free dull gray ioun stone at 6th, 12th, and 18th levels. She also increases the AC of stones in her ioun cloud by an amount equal to her class level, and she increases the hardness of these stones by an amount equal to half her class level (minimum +0).

That ability can help a bit.

It looks like you'll burn through your first level allotment of stones in a about 6 attacks at level 3. What a silly archetype.

Yeah, we just ignore that rule because it's dumb.

To my mind, that's the same as saying the fighters weapon takes damage every time he attacks......

I'll have to see if the GM is willing to ignore it as well :P

Ranged Weapon Damage
Objects take half damage from ranged weapons (unless the weapon is a siege engine or something similar). Divide the damage dealt by 2 before applying the object’s hardness.

Ineffective Weapons
Certain weapons just can’t effectively deal damage to certain objects. For example, a bludgeoning weapon cannot be used to damage a rope. Likewise, most melee weapons have little effect on stone walls and doors, unless they are designed for breaking up stone, such as a pick or hammer.

is a person an effective weapon for dealing an ioun stone damage?

does the stone take half?

It's not the person that's damaging the telekinetically blasted item, it's the force of your blast itself.

That's probably the best way to go. Oddly enough, the way telekinetic blast describes the "loosening the strands" option, maybe you are supposed to damage weapons when you attack things.

"Alternatively, you can loosen the strands of aether in order to deal damage to both the object and the target as though you had thrown the object yourself"

This option makes it sounds like you aren't normally doing damage to your ammunition when you use, but this option does and all normal thrown weapon attacks do as well. I'm not sure what to make of it really.

A simple way to avoid the problem is to purchase a bunch of ioun torches. They're 75 gold a piece and they're still technically ioun stones.

though as they're destroyed you'd have other problems to deal with.

I mean, you can get dull grey ioun stones even cheaper for 25 gp. Having to pop 25 gp every six attacks or so at level 3 isn't great, though. Even gunslingers only drop about 1.1 gp per shot. (Hmm, maybe there should be a Dull Grey Ioun Stone Smithing feat...?)
