Why all the hate of Janira Gavix?

Pathfinder Society

Silver Crusade 2/5

It's almost a bit jarring how much people hate her. I get that she is a halfing with a tour guide personality and she is not built optimally. But hearing how much people actively hate her....just feels wrong. I know of some people who wanted to play society but is a bit put off by the hatred when talking about the Confirmation with some people. I also just hate that people actively leave her to die in Confirmation while spouting their hatred for her. That is not very Society-like. I don't think she is the most likable NPC in the world but I don't think she deserves the flack she gets.

Am I missing something here?

The only reason she might be, "Unlikeable," is because of the way GMs portray her.

I don't *hate* her, but when we grapple her and shove her in a sack so we can fight the Minotaur the least she could do is Inspire Courage.

Just sayin'.

No hating on her from anyone I know. For the most part she comes across as amusing.

EH? Never seen anyone hate on her. Ever. The most critical comment I've heard is

"She's trying to keep us alive. She'll never make venture captain that way"

She is definitely NOT the worst Pathfinder out there that players run into.

Not by the farthest of margins.

If I had played (instead of taking GM credit) Confirmation, I would not have hated Janira. However, I would probably have flirted with her a lot being a paladin of Arshea and all.

I quite like her myself. But I have seen her gleefully killed a couple of times in Serpents Rise

Could be because the author was a notoriously deadly PFS GM.

Grand Lodge 4/5

I don't mind but I can gamble on her being set up as over-chatty by default, and some GMs not toning that down even if the scenario invites so if the players show disapproval.

I have seen worse, but some could even walk out and I won't blame these. The Wounded Wisp and The Consortium Compact don't have this "problem".

How local players feel about an NPC tends to be very local.

Compare Nigel - some people run him as a bumbling idiot who scoffs at you when you try to help him, others run him as a well-meaning helpful guy who's just out of his depth.

If the previous three GMs ran Nigel as a jerk it's likely you think of him that way and will run him like it. If you read the scenario without preconceptions it might be different.

(I'm loving the recent scenarios where he actually gets his hands dirty. Mostly off-screen, but at least he's being part of the solution now.)

It's sort of like a certain sometimes-reviled information broker.

Half the portrayals I've heard of play him as a rather skeezy slimeball, but every time *I've* played and he's shown up he's been 'businessperson' or 'totally cool dude'.

Or how a certain Venture Person in Magnimar can also inspire the usage of many resources to ensure their removal from play OR is one of the most hospitable and charming hosts one can imagine.

EDIT: Come to think of it, this 'table variation' may be the true stumbling block if regional material is created...

I seem to recall my Halfling Swashbuckler hitting on her.

I've never personally in my (limited, maybe 3-4 times played and GMed combined) experience of the Confirmation seen any Janira hate. When I GM I play her as a Chatty Cathy *but* tone it down if the characters/players don't seem interested. By my reading she's enthusiastic but not clueless at reading other people.

Never seen it. Really? Some players hate her? Ok.

Noooooo not Janira. :( Janira is nice.

Janira 4eva! Run well, she's a fabulous, in-character way to introduce new players to the sorts of threats and countermeasures they need to know about but might not expect. Be ready for swarms; always bring rope and light sources. Run from things you can't handle. And go down swinging!

"Go down swinging" indeed. Of the five times (I think, might be four) I've played The Confirmation, at least three times she ate a crit from that thing and went down hard. She's a crit-magnet.

Sounds like a perfect match for Ledford from First Steps. I crit with that Halfling Barbarian way too many times.

I'd like to mention two games I was involved in some time back (both run in Core), two with an odd connection - First Steps and then Confirmation...

The First Steps was run by a beginning Judge - her first game (our 13 year old judge - and the next youngest person at the table was her mom - but that is another story). Mostly it was a lot of fun... and the judge really liked Ledford and the lack of complex tactics for that character. She seemed to enjoy the simple tactics of "hit it with a Great Ax", so much so that she built a "look alike" for him and took it into the next Core game as a PC - so we played Confirmation with a Halfling Barbarian with a great ax named Ledford (the halfling, not the ax).

Anyway - the second game was a lot of fun too (I was the Judge for this one) - and the final blow was glorious!

The PCs are rushing out of the cave to save the Janira with most of the party shooting at the Big Bad. Ledford (from the back of the party) moves out of the cave up to the difficult area (the trees), and draws the potion of Feather Step (from the back pack). Next round he drinks the potion and moves up to 10' short of the stream, so that he can get a running start. Then the third round he charges across - jumping the stream (I wasn't sure if he could charge and jump - but heck, rule of kewl and all that) right into combat with the BBE. Big Bad swings an AOO and misses "the Mustache with Feet" and the little guy rolls his first (and only) natural "20" of the night, and then just barely confirms the crit (thanks in part to the Bards singing). This, backed up with the damage from the missile fire (Force Missiles from the Evoker Wiz and arrows/bolts from the other players) and the BBE is down - dead.

So yeah, the male Halfling barbarian charged the monster and put it down with one Ax blow! Saving Janira.... fade to next scene (hay! the barbarian is run by a 13 year old girl! So clean up those thoughts you gamer geeks you!)

And thus the Big Bad from the old intro game killed the Big Bad from the second intro game...was glorious!

I never understood it. Some people just think she's "annoying", but I just think she's the most helpful Pathfinder agent/cheerleader ever. I do think it's sometimes how GMs portray her (especially if a GM doesn't like the character).

Thanks Wolf. Always wondered what it was like to snort iced coffee.
