Any other way to get a Huge animal companion?

Advice

I only found a way with the Mammoth Rider PRC, which bumps your companion's size from Large (or even smaller) to Huge, with additional class features.

What if I... don't want to pick up the PRC due to not fitting my style of play or simply not meeting the requirements?

What if I want to play a Medium cavalier mounting a Huge elephant, a brawler of the Wild Child archetype with a Huge T-Rex, or a bard with a Huge lizard to hook up his war drums? (There are feats that can grant animal companions to other classes.)

Are there other means to get a Huge companion for different purposes, or is the PRC the only known way so far?

Animal growth+permanency?

Not that I know, although the Mammoth Rider gives you the size increase at 1st level, before most of the flavor comes in. You could just take that and be done. Plus the prereqs are merely skill ranks you might even already have.

Primal Companion Hunter might be able to do it, assuming your pet is large to begin with ? Maybe ?
It would be a level 15+ thing though, so a bit late. Also not permanent, but still.

There's no reason you can't do both of those: Hunter [Primal Companion] is an excellent build-up for Mammoth Hunter.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

If dinosaurs are your passion (and order abilities aren't), you might consider the saurian champion cavalier from Ultimate Wilderness. It'll get you that Huge T-Rex. ^_^

Ok, so...
- Mammoth Rider prestige class (initial reason for alternative)
- Animal Growth + Permanency (pretty sure magic items can do that too)
- Hunter [Primal Companion archetype]
- Cavalier [Saurian Companion archetype]

You'll need GM approval to use animal growth with permanency; it isn't one of the specified spells that can be made permanent. You might be better off with a multiple-use-per-day dire collar to get the effects of enlarge person. (A MUPD greater dire collar would be quite expensive.)

Permanent Animal Growth isn't kosher as far as I know, but Enlarge Person + Permanency should work if you have the share spells class feature - which would work for the Sylvan Sorcerer, Goliath Druid, and Clerics with the Growth / Strength and Animal / Scalykind domains, off the top of my head.

Cleric with the Animal (animal companion like a druid, to include Share Spells) and Plant/Growth (enlarge as a domain spell; can cast on animal companion with Share Spells) domains. Drop one feat on Boon Companion. You can purchase a scroll of permanency [enlarge person], if you have a decent UMD bonus, or hire a wizard to cast it at a pretty low cost.

Edit: Heh. Ninja Pounce...

Goliath Druid gets an animal companion that becomes large (as usual) at level 7. They also have the ability to cast Enlarge Person on their companion. So, from level 7 onwards you can have a Huge companion for 1 minute/level (which can easily be extended). They can also spontaneously convert other spells to Enlarge Person, so you should be able to keep your companion Huge a good amount of the time. (But of course, when they are not enlarged, it's still a full round cast to cast it on them).
