As memey as the title sounds, this is a genuine request on behalf of one of my players, played straight. He plans on playing an escaped slave from the Shackles who has grown to use rap- similar to this kind specifically!- as a way of sticking to the faith of Milani and inspiring teammates to fight for a better future. He'll be used in the Hell's Rebels campaign, and the player's eager to have him fight at the front lines rather than sit at the back and cast spells the way a bard would.

What would be fun build for this guy? It doesn't need to be the most optimized, though the player DOES love doing some sick damage- but stuff like flame magic to "drop fire" or feats which would help make the guy rough and tumble would be super appreciated! He's open to VMC'ing if needs be, since he's not usually too good at picking feats himself. According to the player, "i want him to hit good, rap good, and bc of the nature of his background, sleight of hands good".

Go wild!

True story: the rapid-fire pace of some rap is what inspired Blazing Rondo. (That is, in fact, why Perform [oratory] is one of its performance types.)

Might be worth considering for a feat at 7th level. ^_^

Ooo, I really like the Blazing Rondo! I forwarded it onto the player, and I reckon he's fairly set on getting it when he can! Any more suggestions, archetype/feat wise?

Name: Barz

I got bars for days
I drop bars that blaze (blistering invictive)

My charm has no match,
Opponents don't get scratch.

See'em lookin' for the escape hatch,
Lost, where the doors have no latch (mind maze)

If its rage or diplomacy
Don't matter battle's an atocracy

Ifrits know my heat so feel the blaze.
It bares repeating barz got bars days.

Viking and rap cultures have a lot of similarities. Wearable wealth, extemporizing poetry with a penchant for self promotion, venerate related women but objectify others, and more.. so, go viking Skald, be an extra-original gangster.. trait for sleight of hand if necessary..

For more ways to weaponize words, the blistering invective spell, the wit bard, or soundstriker bard.

I really like the concept.

The more rappy spells, the better!
Has anyone got a particular build, feat-wise, which would allow for a Skald to be physically pretty bulky while also being good at stealing? That, or a way to make him more of a Blaster than a regular supporter. On top of that, is VMC worth looking at at all for this concept?

Given that "rap" is an acronym for Rhythmic African Poetry, could we substitute Andoran? Or Alkenstar? Or Avistani?

Blistering Invective is a great spell for a rapper, it's the manifestation of "you just got burned!" I actually played a game with the guy that created the spell, and he more or less confirmed that.

I think this is apocryphal.

I had a similar idea. I was using the Breakdancer class with a dip in Samauri. Put that on a Half-drow, and bang! Highly mobile and good crits with reach and supernatural effects.

Definitely apocryphal. Here's the actual etymology. While it's true rap music is DEFINITELY of African origins, this kind of stuff completely denies other cultures who have adopted it from using it. The player in question is Costa Rican, and rap there is just as important as it would be to African Americans using it. Latin Hip Hop became popular for the exact same reasons as it did with the Afrian American people, and it's definitely a part of who many of them- including this player- are. Here's a Wikipedia about it, with several "See Also" pages of similar veins, references, etc. Latin Rap is markedly different to other rap genres too, hence why I linked a particular freestyle which fit the character in the original post, but just in case you're skeptical, Here's some other examples! The Shackles has big inspiration from the Carribean (a place where MANY Latin/Hispanic people come from) too, so the setting is perfectly suitable. "We" will not be changing anything, thank you kindly! Have you any recommendations for this build or not? :)

A breakdancer class? Where are you finding that? My player's not very interested in dance, but certainly whatever source you're using might have interesting rules to go with it!
