Marvel fans will show up in hazmat suits.
Or hope to gain superpowers from exposure. "Bitten by a radioactive virus, she became Patient Zero! With her faithful canine companion, Vector..."
Sorry, I'm on kind of a "dumb origins" kick lately. Reading several books like this and watching the 1st episode of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist will have that effect, apparently.

Damon, sounds fun, maybe write those down for a Mutants and Masterminds (or insert your favorite supers game of your choice) game.
Thomas, dangerous to make assumptions about Covid-19. I'm sure they are just hoping for the best and not wanting to wreck their production schedule. As for origin stories, FYI this movie is not really going to be an origin story. While I'm sure her beginnings will be expanded upon, the main story arc takes place right after Civil War.

Which is one of the reasons I hope it will be succesful (beyond really hoping that Black Widow gets the respect she deserves).
If it works out, it opens the door to doing more "in between" movies instead of Always having to set up the next Avengers, the next Story line, bla bla. That would take a lot of pressure from the Writers.

Kind of wish it was taking place between Infinity War and Endgame. Would have been interesting to see a bit more of post-Snap earth, even if that wasn't the main focus.

I'm torn. I do like the big story arcs.
I think they've done a pretty good job of having in between movies only loosely attached to the main arc in addition to the obvious main arc episodes. A McGuffin. A post credits scene. Or just the intro of a main character who's going to be important.

DQ,
I'm sorry I assumed something...mostly because I was under the misinformation about how wide spread the outbreak is turning out to be.
Also apparently BW is being put on hiatus until after this is settled. Which sucks because I was hoping to see that and New Mutants before the middle of the summer...

With so many big movies being delayed, I'm expecting that the calendar for the rest of the year will start to get so crowded that any movie which isn't an expected blockbuster might find a home elsewhere instead of a theatrical release. I'm betting New Mutants could have a Disney+ release due to this, especially with them already setting a precedent of adding Frozen II to D+ 3 months earlier than planned.

I've been out of comics WAYYY too long. Last I remember Roberto DaCosta he was a hot-headed strong guy, with some burgeoning heat aspects to his powers, who was known for being rash, sexist and maybe a little dumb. He's been RUNNING Advanced Idea Mechanics, the "big brain" techie bad guy group?

Yeah. The organization was on bad times, it's last supreme leader dead, and along came Roberto, flush with tons of money he'd inherited from his dad (and with updated powers from that old Reignfire debacle in the '80s, so he can fly and throw zaps, but rarely does, usually just tanking), and bought them up and rebranded AIM as 'Avengers Idea Mechanics,' and set them to work supporting an Avengers team of his own including Songbird, Wiccan, Hulkling, Hawkeye, and some others (POD, Squirrel Girl, the second Power Man, the third or fourth White Tiger, Toni Ho, etc.). It was pretty whacky, and fun.
But it's over and he's back in the X-side of the universe, although, I think he's currently in Shiar space with Sam (who is married to one of the Shiar Imperial Guard).

As much as I enjoyed Scarlett Johanssen as Black Widow, I don't see a reason to shell out extra money to see this in the theater, or as a premier service for Disney+. I'd rather just wait a few more months for it to be available without the added fee.
Luckily, I'm one of those lovable a$%##!~s who isn't truly bothered by spoilers, so the thought of hearing things ahead of time doesn't truly bother me.

I know you will be all shocked to learn this, but I have seen it and I loved it. (Saw it in the theater, very few people were in the theater and all spread out and masked, and I am vaccinated.)
I had very high hopes for this movie, but I honestly half-expected to be disappointed. Waiting this long, and also knowing Natasha's fate from Endgame, it was hard to know how I was going to feel about what would happen. I also have a weird love-hate rollercoastery relationship with the major Marvel movies... I love the characters, but don't always love the plots. And while they are always filmed well and in such an evocative way that I can feel a rush while I watch a film and finish it feeling "Wooo!", half the time I'm even leaving the theater I start going, "Wait, why did they do that? What was that plot point about? What was even going on? This makes no sense?"
I did not feel that way at all. Now, I am not as nitpicky about the plot points of splodey funtimes capey-wearing hero movies as some folks here (I say this with love in my heart for those nitpickers. Well, mostly love). So I can't guarantee you will feel good with the movement of the plot as I did. But I really liked it, start to finish, loved the pacing, loved the balance between action and more human, personal moments.
The other caveats you should take is my favorite kind of superheroey stories is lower-power-scale, noiry, spyish or street level stories but with comic book trappings and cool costumes, particularly if such stories feature badass women. So basically this movie was made for me. Those of you who are more into the cosmic/paragon level of Marvel stories may not feel the same way.
They fleshed out Natasha's backstory very well, and closed a lot of loops. We see more about how the Red Room works, past and present (and as an Agent Carter fan, I was delighted to see some tiny details that were repeated/updated elements shown from the prototype Red Room training scenes on that show providing a sense of continuity---if you never saw the show you don't miss anything, they just showed a couple things that are similar; I acknowledge that only I care about this but I'm sharing because I got excited).
Cast is amazing; Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour are awesome if not more awesome than you expect. As someone who went in feeling very lukewarm about Yelena, I really like what they did with her in the movie, and yes, I don't think anyone will feel spoiled if I say that I think we should expect to see more of her.
One of my wishes for the movie was to get a scene reminiscent of the opening of Mark Waid's Black Widow miniseries several years ago, and I got my wish.
There is an end credits scene.
There are a couple threads that tie into the Falcon and the Winter Soldier (which was originally going to come out after this). Not in a way that requires you to see it, just interesting if you do. I think we may also see some follow up in some other Disney+ series.
I won't get into spoilery thoughts for now but am happy to answer questions if someone's curious or on the fence about seeing it on release in these still kind of weird pandemicy times.

I also really liked it. Unlike a lot of Marvel movies, it really felt like multiple characters were changed due to the events of the movie. The weakest part of the movie was the development of the central villain, and the A-plot of the movie is pretty mediocre IMO. Where it shines is the various subplots of character relationships. Natasha doesn't just have to confront someone else, but she has to confront the choices she's made in the past. The people in this movie have deeply hurt each other, and for a comic book movie, I think these complicated relationships play out pretty well.
Some of the action choices I was a bit disappointed with, but there was plenty that was still cool and interesting. Lots of good humor throughout.
After the long wait for a Marvel movie, I felt it was good and well worth it.

I enjoyed it, but thought that while it was good, entertaining and I'm glad I saw it, it didn't crack the top 10 MCU movies for me. Considering the bar, that's not really a criticism, but I was surprised since so many reviews called it the best solo MCU movie.
What I liked best about it was that it felt like a movie grade version of the best of Agents of SHIELD, with lots of cool clever spy things going on, and while there were good fights, the heroes won due to out thinking their enemies.
I also felt that, while I understand the importance of giving Black Widow a movie finally, that this particular plot line would have been better served with 6-8 episodes of a TV show on D+. It would have given even more time for character development, which was a strong point of the movie, and also allowed for more time with some of the other Black Widows, both in fights and in developing them as characters.

We're going to see it later this week. Not because we like Black Widow or Johanssen (we find them rather bland and boring), but a) we like going to the movies and 2020 did not afford many opportunities and it's another month until the next movie we want to watch comes out, and b) to support female action heroes. Vote with your wallet and all that.
Under normal circumstances we'd just wait for it to show up on Disney+

If we're only looking at first outings/origin stories for solo characters (like TFA but not TWS), I would argue this is one of the best, but I both love Black Widow and spy-adventure-with-a-touch-of-slice-of-life stories, so YMMV. I do think calling it the "best" is hyperbole, if only because most of the solo movies are extremely strong, IMO.

I respectfully disagree... I think trying to do this story as a tv series would have caused them to pad it out in a way that would have not served the story. And the spectacle aspect of the film was much better served by being on the big screen.
BUT I absolutely think they intend to flesh out many of the characters introduced in this movie in future D+ series; Yelena is confirmed for Hawkeye (and I'm sure future projects as well), and a "Widows" themed TV series would be very cool.

It was fine.
Makes one wonder though how the fall in Endgame killed Natasha given the absolute thumping she took escaping from Budapest. And walked away from.
Also, the dialog coach seems to have been absent about half the time. Or maybe just not present for the ADR work. Given how much time they had to fix things like this, I'd call the effort rather low budget.

Re: Natasha's fall, which I'm addressing 'cause I've seen that observation all over the internet:
Gamora was I think even more superhuman than Natasha and still died on Vormir. So I think there's something especially deadly/supernatural the situation at Vormir that the sacrifice is guaranteed to die. Like if the people on Vormir were... IDK just for the sake of argument, Hulk and Betty Ross, and Betty sacrifices Hulk, he'd still die because Vormir and the magic of the Soul Stone, even though he's otherwise the Hulk and should easily be able to survive that. In other words, it's not actually the fall that kills you, it's the Soul Stone. The cliff is less a real cliff and more a representation of the sacrifice the stone's seeker must make--that's why once the sacrifice is made, the person who obtains the stone suddenly finds themselves at the base of the cliff with the stone in hand.
Secondly, even if this is not the case, and I think it is, Natasha in the sequences here was actively working to break her fall--most of the time you clearly see her aiming to hit, grab, and bounce off things to slow her descent. This is something Black Widows have been trained to do for decades. On Vormir, she was actively trying not to save herself so Clint could get the stone.
Yes, the accents were all over the place, but I can easily ignore that for the sake of fantasy. But yeah, I agree they could have hired a better dialect coach or two.

I think Natasha simply sacrificed herself in Endgame. Movie moment and all that so her plot armor wasn't on.
As for Black Widows being trained to fall like Natasha did in the escape from Budapest.... all I can say is she realistically wouldn't be walking away from that even if she did somehow live.
As for Dottie's stairwell decent.... parkour is a thing, sure (though I suspect the stunt person for Dottie was on a wire). Natasha's fall in Budapest was largely uncontrolled. So like I said, she wouldn't be walking away from that unless she's jacked up on super soldier serum.

It's a superhero movie. "Realistic" doesn't apply. Even when the characters don't have superpowers.
As for "sacrificed herself", that was kind of the point of that scene? Nothing to do with "plot armor", but with the weird way that place worked.

Yeah, I don't it's the fall that kills you on Vormir, so much as the having your soul sucked out of your body and fed to the soul stone that does the job.
One of many things I liked about Black Widow was name drops of Crimson Dynamo and (IIRC?) Ursa Major, suggesting the existence of a Soviet-era 'Avengers' that we never got to see the adventures of (but might get to see in flashbacks, or the future of, in later shows).
Plus the existence of a new group, including Alexei, Marina, Antonia and a dozen-ish other Widows, not just Yelena, for possible action / adventure. Most of them don't have flashy powers (Alexei and Antonia, just kinda), so their fights would be a bit more dynamic and kinetic and less of a CGI-fest than Thor, Hulk, Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel throwing stuff around. (Which I like, even if I *also* like the kewl powerz!) :)
