Hi, I have been a ranger fan for a while now, and I have always been sad that there I could not find any ranger archetypes that let you gain (limited) wildshape - something that to me, the class has always been close to due to its links to animals and nature in general. Is there a way to get wildshape on a single-class ranger or get its effects in any other way, such as beast shape as a spell (ideally 1 level lower)? I had high hopes for Ultimate Wilderness, but as far as I understand while a few other classes got archetypes that give them this feature, rangers did not.

Not that I know of.
Multiclass for a few Druid levels (4-6) and then grab the Shapeshifting Hunter and/or Shaping Focus feats ?
Without multiclassing ... Some archetypes allow you to grab spells from other lists or switch the whole list, but iirc that's mostly bard spells - so more Alter Self than Beast Shape. Better than nothing, still not ideal.

Lycanthropy can be an interesting option.
Aspect of the Beast
Whether by magic or a curse of your blood, some part of you is more beast than man.
Prerequisite: wild shape class feature, see Special.
Benefit: Your bestial nature manifests itself in one of the following ways. You choose the manifestation when you choose the feat, and then you cannot change it.
Night Senses (Ex): If your base race has normal vision, you gain low-light vision. If your base race has low-light vision, you gain darkvision out to a range of 30 feet. If your base race has darkvision, the range of your darkvision increases by 30 feet.
Claws of the Beast (Ex): You grow a pair of claws. These claws are primary attacks that deal 1d4 points of damage (1d3 if you are Small).
Predator's Leap (Ex): You can make a running jump without needing to run 10 feet before you jump.
Wild Instinct (Ex): You gain a +2 bonus on initiative checks and a +2 bonus on Survival skill checks.
Special: A character that has contracted lycanthropy can take this feat without having to meet the prerequisites. A ranger who selects the natural weapon combat style can take this feat without having to meet the prerequisites (even if he does not select Aspect of the Beast as a bonus feat).

If you’re ok with third party material, you might want to check out the Skin-Changer in the New Paths Compendium, which releases in the next week or so.
I think the Skin-Changer might be a lot closer to what many folks were hoping for in a full BAB class that specializes in wildshaping, and it’s a variant of the Spell-less Ranger!

So, only the druid VMC if we go by official sources. Okay, thanks. Pity, I was hoping there would be something in the Ultimate Wilderness book, but I´m not quite looking for a shifter.
Don't worry, the shifter isn't a shifter.
It's a hybrid class between monk, warrior, and VMC druid.

I believe the Shapeshifting Hunter feat has already been mentioned. But it's better for a druid doing a one-level Ranger dip -- going the other way you're a Ranger looking at a minimum 4 level Druid dip, which is much less attractive.
There's also the Shapeshifter Ranger archetype. It's not full wild shape, but it's not too bad mechanically, and the flavor is good.
