why permanency are exclusive to wizard / socerrer ?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

i have trouble when playing as summoner, since i cant cast permanency. i must buy a scroll, then i realize the scroll rules.

the caster must have spell, in his spell list. summoner didn't have ones.

this is troublesome, nobody in my team want to play wizard / sorcerer (since i was the only wizard in my team).

:(

Put ranks into Use Magic Device? Then you can use the scroll yourself.

What Jeraa said. As long as you have ranks in Use Magic Device (Which summoners get), you can attempt to activate the scrolls to use with permanency. The trouble is working out how to get a scroll of permanency that covers the exact amount of gold you need for whatever spell you want made permanent.

The other part that sucks is actually having to navigate activating the scroll, since scrolls are tough.

Use Magic device/Use a scroll: 20 + Caster Level

Permanency: Sorcerer/Wizard level 5

If the typical scroll is set at the earliest Caster Level where a spell can be accessed, that means a Scroll of Permanency is likely to be Caster Level 9 requiring a 29 to use it.

Starting Eidolon forms start off at Charisma 11. Add to that:

1. Give Eidolon Use Magic Device as a Class Skill at the start
2. 1 pt Evolution giving Eidolon +8 to Use Magic Device

By the time your sorcerer hits level 9 your eidolon may be sitting at +20 Use Magic Device if it's taken 1 rank every level. This can be further enhanced by

1. Charisma increases
2. Spell buffs

Just off the top of my head I know of another sorcerer/wizard spell from level 2 called Visualization of the Mind that gives a +5 Untyped Bonus to Charisma based skill checks. That right there puts you at needing a 4 or better on a D20. Throw in a +4 to the eidolon's Cha and you just have to get a 2 or better.

So it is entirely feasible that the eidolon, with the right spells, can use a scroll of Permanency FOR your sorcerer. This is a build strategy I've suggested over the past couple years to folks with a Wizard and a Familiar with the Valet archetype...

Suggestion, pay someone else to do it:

Doesn't always work. Some spells can only be made permanent on the person casting the Permanency and can not be made permanent on other creatures. Meaning you have to cast the spell (or use an item) yourself.

Having someone else cast Permanency on you limits the spells that can be made permanent.

Get someone to cast Bestow Insight. At CL 8-11, that is a +4 insight bonus, trained, and a re-roll to the target.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Summoners are already badass enough without having access to every spell in the book. If you're worried about UMD on the scroll, remember the L10 ability that lets you give yourself a couple evolution pounts, one of which can be the Skilled evolution for UMD. Put on a circlet of persuasion and start rocking the scroll usage.
