Oh I know, I watched the trailer film in polish subtitled in german.
(I speak neither of them). Still I recognized some of the scenes and characters.I just hope that with modern CGIs and Netflix budget, we will get something better

For what it's worth, they did right by "A Series of Unfortunate Events," and they ARE bringing the author along.

But its netflix...Look at there line up of shows. I'm not too worried about the folks who did Narcos, Orange is the New Black, Sense8, or Hemlock Grove feeling the need to make it PG13. Especially given the recent success of R rated fantasies Game of Thrones and American Gods. Even Stranger Things and the Marvel stuff is all at the hard end of PG13. I feel pretty confident that whatever problems may exist with the adaptation, it won't be the studios going PG13.

I mostly fear that they try to do the game's storylines again, due the audience being more familiar with them and their simpler storylines. I want that they either cook up some new stories (unlikely) or follow the book's storylines more closely, and adapt Last Wish and Sword of Destiny-books as they are- collection of shorter stories. Do not start huge storylines with complex plots and thousand characters before establishing the world and key characters first.

The producers include the guys who did the CGI intros to all three Witcher games, which has led to the suggestion that the series will be CG. I don't think that's the case, the CG guys will just be involved more heavily due to scenes with creatures in them.
As for approach, I think the idea is to adapt the books starting with the short stories. I suspect they will borrow the visual stylings of the games to bring in the gamers: remember that THE WITCHER is predmominantly perceived as a gaming franchise in the UK and US, due to the very late publication of the novels and the assumption that the books are based on the games, and on a worldwide level the games have massively outsold the books.
That said, I doubt we'll see the TV show adapting the games, which take place after the books and lean rather heavily on them (especially the first one).

Lauren S. Hissrich, who was a writer-producer on THE WEST WING, DAREDEVIL and THE DEFENDERS, is the showrunner of the series.
She's tweeted this week that they are starting work on the TV series. They've written a series bible and broken the first couple of episodes already. Based on the normal Netflix timescale I expect casting announcements in the spring, shooting to start in the summer and this to hit the air in the first half of 2019.
There seems to be a growing campaign to cast Zack McGowan from THE 100 and BLACK SAILS as Geralt. I can see that.
My understanding is the the netflix folks have the rights to the books. Anything original to the games would probably not be covered.
People who worked on the video games are working on the TV show, though, so we'll have to see how that pans out. The games are set a few years after the books, so they'd only need to talk to CDPR once they exhausted the 2 short story collections, the stand-alone novel and the five-book series, which will take them 5-7 seasons, so they can decide by that point what they want to do. Sapkowski may have also executed his occasional threat to write a "proper" continuation that contradicts the game storyline by then as well.

Do not know this McGowan or his work, but looks right to me. I just hope this Geralt does not growl every sentence out of his mouth. This might be just from reading the books first, but Geralt's growly voice in video games gets old very fast.
Like, he is badass but not because he sounds like he drinks a bottle of scotch a day and smokes pack a day.

The Witcher Season 1 will consist of 8 episodes, will adapt the first two books (THE LAST WISH and SWORD OF DESTINY) and will probably air in early 2020 (cannily between the last season of GAME OF THRONES and the first of FRANKLY UNNECESSARY LORD OF THE RINGS TV SHOW WHAT THE HELL AMAZON). It will also film in Eastern Europe, predominantly in Poland, where the books were written.

Casting about to begin for THE WITCHER TV series.
Interesting facts: they're casting internationally and Dandelion will be known by his original Polish name, Jaskier, which is already proving controversial amongst some English-speaking fans.

Yup, GoT S8 sounds like it'll air around April 2019, then THE WITCHER will air in early 2020 and we'll get LotR some time in 2021 (if not 2022), since it has to start shooting before the end of 2020 or Amazon will lose their rights to make it.
And somewhere in there is wheel of time. We can only hope they all work out.

Henry Cavill throws his hat into the ring to play Geralt.
Doesn't mean it'll happen, of course, but it's interesting to learn that Cavill is a huge Witcher fan, has played the video games (Witcher 3 twice, right-through) and even read the novels.

Netflix bring forward the series from 2020 to 2019.
Shooting begins next month and runs through to May. The shoot will be based in Budapest, Hungary, with some filming to be done in Poland as well.

I've read they announced a casting call for Ciri.
They are specifically looking for a non-white person of age around 15 or older who can do 15.
Not quite correct. They are using a British casting agency. British casting agencies have a set of definitions for actors, one of which is BAME (Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic). Although more frequently used to cast actors from non-white backgrounds, BAME is also used to cast actors of non-British white origin, including those from Eastern Europe (Polish or others of a Slavic origin).
Casting Ciri with a non-white actress would create its own problematic issues, mainly that it means her father would also have to be non-white and his empire of conquering invaders who act as major antagonists in the series would also have to be non-white, which has a whole set of other connotations.
That said, it was always majorly illogical that, if we count Redania and Temeria as being analogues of Poland, that Nilfgaard, some 1,500-2,000 miles due south, would also be a land of white people. It'd be analogous to Egypt, so people from Nilfgaard would be more logically north African or Middle-Eastern in appearance.

Ha, well they cast a white British girl as Ciri, but then cast an Indian-British actress as Yennefer, which I think has just majorly confused everyone.
Most amusing is that it has also started some kind of major argument between gamers - who seem salty that the show is going in a different visual direction to the games (ignoring the fact they have to, not to get sued by CDPR) - and book fans, who seem to be liking the fact that the TV show is hewing much closer to the books. Quite a few of them were annoyed when Yennefer showed up in The Witcher 3 looking a lot older than she did in the books, whilst the show casting is more book-accurate in terms of age.
Werthead |
Yennefer is about 100 years old when she meets Geralt. The actress is 21. Even with Elven blood, Yennefer should not look like she was barely out of her teens.
Yennefer made herself look a lot younger with magic. All the sorcerers do, but Yenn took it to massive extremes because of her deformity. At one point in the books Jaskier says she looks about 16 years old (at another point someone says she looks about 20, so she may have adjusted the glamour).
