Craft Alchemy in PFS

This may seem like a stupid question but with the new rules allowing crafting for Alchemists, I want to make sure I am clear before I do it.

Crafting is clearly done during downtime, but how many checks can be made during each downtime? Is it as many as desired or needed, or is it only one? Obviously it would be rude to expect a GM to sit and watch you make an hour worth of checks, but is there a legitimate ruling on how many checks?

And similarly, does making crafting checks prevent you from also making a Day Job check? Can you do both in the same session?

Thanks as always.

You can do both.

The limit is the amount of cash you want to expend.

You can take 10.

I believe if you are rolling it needs to be done with a GM to verify, but if you can take 10 and make the item it shouldn't be an issue.

Where are the new rules? Can I also do this with my investigator or anyone with ranks in craft alchemy?

It's in the FAQ

Only alchemists or investigators, I think.

Thanks for all the replies. I figured it worked this way.

James, they have recently opened it up to people with poison use to make poisons only. But yes, other than that Alchemists and Investigators with the ALCHEMY ability.

That 'new' FAQ entry sounds like the way the rulings have been for some time. Just consolidated to one entry.

Am I missing something? Did something actually change?

AFAIK in this case, no. They recently consolidated all the official posts and cleaned up the PFS FAQ page, and renamed it to Organized Play FAQ, in anticipation of SFS.

Thanks Alanya.

Now we just have to convince them to expand alchemy crafting to underground chemist rogues.

Or just to make it simple, without having to revisit it in the future, just say any character with a level-based bonus to Craft (alchemy) can craft alchemical items.

Here's a question that came up yesterday, and we couldn't find the answer, though we probably just missed it some place obvious. How long does alchemical crafting actually take?

I ran a scenario where you get a mission briefing in Absalom, then take a ship to the location of the actual mission, which would take at least a few days, possibly weeks. Given that they were headed to a jungle, the party alchemist took the opportunity to make some anti-plague and anti-toxin to carry for the group. Rather than spend a long time researching the answer when we couldn't find it right away, we just handwaved it and said he had time to make 4 things of that low value level (one for each party member) over the couple of weeks on board ship.

Would it not be the process listed in the Craft skill? Making a roll every week against the DC and accruing progress towards the price of the item?

It absolutely would be done with the standard Craft rules. Note that the Craft rules allows for daily checks, and alchemists get class features that allow them to craft alchemical items faster.

Yes.

Short answer: If he can make exactly a DC 25 check while taking 10 he could make 3 antitoxins in 16.5 days. Less time if he gets a higher result. If he's 3rd level (and didn't give up the swift alchemy ability for an archetype) then it's half that time. If he can't make a DC 25 while taking 10 then you needed to roll it out.

actual mathematical formula:

Using antitoxin as an example:
Item's Price in silver pieces = 500
Craft DC = 25
Daily progress = (Check result x DC)/7 = (Check result x 3.57)
When total progress = 500, item is complete

You can choose to voluntarily increase the DC by 10 to decrease the time required, so if you can tap a DC 35 the daily progress becomes (check result x 5).
