As someone that's played a wayang occultist, I applaud your choice sir.
Being small and getting smaller weapons leans him slightly more toward spells, but martial is still a fair choice. My advice would be archery if you feel you have the feats to burn. On the other hand, if you're wanting to spend some feats improving your spells or giving yourself more utility, i'd say just pick up a two handed weapon - the free enhancement to strength will be appreciated by the 1.5x str mod, and you're the only legal small race without a str penalty.
I'd advise picking up "Side Step (Sp)" as soon as you feel comfortable just to ensure your slow speed wont get in the way. (and/or, ride a party member's mauler familiar/animal companion if they let you) As a 6/9 spellcaster you could just buff / cast while you wait for them to come to you, of course. Important to note that even if you're wanting to play it as a martial character you'd be silly to ignore the spells you get, they're what will help you (try) to keep up with the fighters.

I have seen a wayang melee occultist character (likely Battle Host). It was quite effective. The one issue was the slow speed in heavy armour. Tribal Scars would be the best way to fix that but it may not fit your character.
Range would limit the need for heavy armour thus fixing the movement problem. My guess is it's the better option but I don't enjoy range game play so I can only recommend it so much.

I have a vague recollection of asking something similar a long time ago. My memory is saying no, it has to be normal material, and I vaguely recall that because you're stuck with it forever, the battle host implement can be a bit of a double edged sword. But, when I was looking into it it was when it had first been released and it was still a bit new, so dont quote me on that.
