How would you run a pool game?

Rules Questions

Seriously how?

Marco

every one is at the pool having fun and playing games and then.... sharknado happens exept instead of sharks they are terasques and the tornado is on fire and every one with no ranks in swim dies

Ah I understand the confusion

I mean a game of pool. As in with balls on a table.

A series of dexterity checks, maybe?

I thought the same but that would be incredibly swingy when in the real world typically people who play a lot of pool win most of the time lol

maybe a combination of dexterity and intelligence? Pool is more geometry than it is a feat of agility.

Sleight of hand checks with DCs randomly determined by GM.

Sleight of hand is a good idea :)

Maybe with knowledge engineering checks to know what the DC is for a shot before you take it.

Can only see a few issues here.

Sleight of Hand: Pool is now trained only. Screw casuals.

Knowledge (engineering): Read above.

The skills can be used untrained though. Eventually, anyone will get a ball in a hole.

On character sheets, those skills as labeled as trained only.

background skills - artistry: pool for the stylish play or lore:pool for the technical play.

profession:gambler or profession: pool player?

Opposed dex checks or any skill the player successfully fast talks you into letting them use reasonably justifies.

I think it would make sense to be able to add slight of hand ranks to the roll if you have them. Xanaver you're arguably being a little ridgid.

The knowledge engineering thing makes sense but I'm not sure what use it would be, either the character is good at the roll the need and can likely make it or they are not, knowing it's a hard shot would not change this.

Profession gambler seems like it should be a class skill for all PCs given the s++@ they pull xD

Attack the ball's AC, using Dex as if Weapon Finesse, maybe with a bonus if you actually have Finesse. I'd set the AC to the level of the characters and how hard you want pool to be, but if you hit, you get that ball into a pocket. If you exceed the AC by x, roll again minus 5, and you ricochet something into a pocket. If you miss, you scratch. If you miss by AC-5, you hit the wrong ball into a pocket. Natural 1? Reflex save or the 8 ball goes in.

I pictured a rogue or swash being naturally good at pool, and tried to set it up to benefit them. Naturally, there should be a bonus for profession: gambler.

but terasquenado :(

some one should turn that into an actual adventure path it would be halerious

Knowledge (Engineering) is SUPER relevant to a pool game. Don't think of it as "just" knowing where to hit the ball - knowing exactly where to hit it is precisely how the game is played. That'd be like saying that you don't need Knowledge (History) as a general; studying other generals and past battles is critical to being a good tactician and strategist.

In my opinion, make a list of skills you think are most important to a game of pool. Sleight of Hand, Knowledge (Engineering), Profession (Gambler) to name a few options. Then allow each player to add their TWO HIGHEST together when making the roll.

This should make the game of pool rather NOT swingy. If you're good at two relevant skills, you'll do fine and will usually outplay someone who's good with only one or none. And if you have both a high DEX and INT but are untrained in those skills, let them use those skills untrained.
