Summons and XP

Rules Questions

Ok everyone. If you were to fight a high level wizard summoner and he summons an army of things to fight. The party DEFEATS them before they expire. Then kill the wizard. Does the party get the xp for the summons and the wizard or just the wizard?

Simple. No. The summons are right within the wizard's abilities. You would get the XP if the wizard ambushed you with his precast summons.

Nope, the xp value of the summoner includes their ability to summon, same as you get no extra xp for fireball spells cast at you.

Just the Wiz not the summoned. This is why a pair of Inv Summoners level 4 (or master Summoners) can realy get people mad as they can fight armys of thing for the same xp as if they did 2 fighters at level 4.

same with leadership feat.
Just have 1 baddie lv20 with leadership, and his cohort with leadership. The Followers are up to lv6 enemies. You could easily have an entire dungeon and guards all give no EXP because they were just leadership minions. Especially nasty if most of those where people that summoned.

Animal companions are the same, no EXP as they are part of a class feature. Fight a ton of companions and eidolons, character runs off and gets a new one for the next day.

Fight over 100 enemies. Gain no EXP. =)

If the spells are cast during combat to summon then no extra experience. If pre-cast then I give some bonus experience.

Or give out XP as normal for the feature creatures, but subtract it out from the boss' when they finally defeat it. That way balance is maintained but the players don't feel screwed in the meantime.

Congrats, you defeated the lv20 boss, but gain no EXP since you've already gained it all many levels ago.

I have seen sources say that you do get experience from defeating summons if you do not face the summoner before he gets his spells back. It would be up to the GM to determine the amount of exp as summons have weaknesses that the base creatures do not. I do not remember if that was a 3.5 response or not.

By the rules there is no XP, but a GM is advised to give ad-hoc XP in certain situations.
