Spells With The Sonic Descriptor

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Why is there such a dearth of these for sorcerer/wizards? I have a friend who wants to specialize in them, but I've found only 17 in the Pathfinder canon and most are pretty low level and pretty lame. And so far I've not found many in my 3rd party hunting, either.

I call shenanigans!

The reason? not many things have sonic resistance, making sonic spells more powerful, so they are generally de-powered to make sure it isnt abused.

Few resistances to the damage, plus they usually have a status rider (e.g. dazed, stunned, deaf) added on.

Something of a false argument, IMHO, since the GM controls what the PCs go up against, so the 'frequency' if sonic resistance entirely in the GM's hands.

Since many GMs use the adventure paths, or pregenerated fights, forcing them to change everything because sonic suddenly becomes a thing is probably far more work than its worth. Not really a false arguement.

Because the Bard is, quite appropriately, the king of sonic spells. Take a look:
Biting words (Magic Tactics Toolbox)
Ear-piercing scream
Cacophonous Call
Piercing Shriek
Soundburst
Thunderous Drums
Discordant Blast
Deafening Song Bolt
Trumpet of the Archon (or whatever that was from Champions of Purity)
and a few more...

Then there are the Finale Spells

And the feat Dissonant Chord

And the archetype Sound Striker...

Yep, the Bard is the king of sound.

There's a couple of sonic damaging wordspells in the words of power stuff, combined with other effect words could make for some interesting spell options.
I like the thundercaller bard archetype.
When stuck, you're potentially left with flavouring force effects?

Oh yeah, I know the Bard rules at that, but he wants to rebuild a Wizard he played a couple of editions back, but focus on sonic spells. He's not interested in a bard. I tried that tack.

Well, whether it's fun for him or not, depends on his expectations. Does he also consider these 17 spells pretty lame?

Personally, I'd go for a lot of metamagic here. Concussive Spell fits thematically - +2 spell level for a -2 debuff on d20s. Thundering Spell doesn't demand sonic descriptor, but should fit also, with +2 spell level for deafening. Beside this, there are many other others to boost a low level spell.

I'll pass this along to him. I found the same spells while looking for such myself, but didn't think of the metamagics. It was kinda late and my depression has been eating away at me for a day or so. My thinking wasn't too clear at the time. Thanks.
