Does the Gate breaker feat even work?

Rules Questions

The gate breaker feat = http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/gate-breaker-combat
Does it even work while sundering? Since you are already getting your str bonus from your normal sunder damage.

Damn I should have looked harder if the question had been asked before. The other thread doesn't give a clear answer though. Guess it's up to my gm to rule on this.

PFS is saying you get str added again.

I assume this is an exception to the FAQ that says you only add an ability once?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Specific trumps general:
"you deal normal damage plus an additional amount equal to your Strength modifier"

So, you can only add a bonus from a source once, unless the ability says otherwise. In this case, I'd say the ability says otherwise.

Okay awesome! Thanks guys.

This isn't adding strength twice; you're adding strength once, and then also adding "an additional amount" which just happens to be equal to your strength modifier.

It's a subtle distinction, but it makes a difference!

nope, we have a FAQ that says that the wording here makes no difference, you are adding str twice. It's just that this is a specific override of the normal rule that you can't double dip.

Actually, my reading of that particular FAQ is that it specifically allows exactly this kind of "double dip"; it specifically calls out that you CAN add "a bonus equal to" in addition to the original bonus.

EDIT: Nope, I was reading it wrong, my apologies!

Plus, this particular wording makes it clear that you always get you strength bonus.
Regardless of two-handing or TWF, you get a bonus equal to strength.
