(PFS) Help with a mounted halfling for maximum rocket tag.

Advice

Yus, it's me again. This build is actually going to be for a good friend of mine though. Don't worry, you guys sold me on the Dawnflower Dervish :3

/quote:

"You've already got an account, just post it on yours. Yeah. Don't really care what class, I just want to complete critbliterate (TM) things. No. Fine."

/end quote.

So here's what he wants;

- To be mounted, for mobility and incredible charge damage w/lance.
- To be halfling, because a) our characters are gonna be related and b) aren't small sized mounted characters the bees' knees anyway, especially with all the dungeons we're forced into?
- To be as minmaxed as possible. I refuse to dump int and cha, and especially not both at once. He says he doesn't mind being stupid and mean if it benefits his ability to oneshot big ugly things.

I really wish I could sell him on a non-martial class, but he's married to the idea, so that leaves our party composition at...

- Greatsword-using warpriest. The player decided to be a bumnugget and watch us from the back the entire last module so I'm not sure what the build is focused on.
- Extra tanky paladin
- Oracle (No idea what mystery she chose, but she functioned as support/face in our first module)
- Monk grappler/debuffer (lots of dirty trick usage, he generally just softens them up for the big hitters)
- Dawnflower dervish bard (yours truly)

Feats are pretty self explanatory, but I don't know what to tell him as far as class, stats, etc.

Cliffs;
- Bringing a friend into our game.
- He wants to play a mounted halfling (kin to the Dawnflower Dervish you all helped me build, for flavor purposes) who specializes in absolutely murdering one thing per turn. So...a pretty stock lance charger.
- Feats are very self explanatory but I don't know where to point him as far as classes and stats.

Barbarians are good at smashing things. Mounted Fury will get an animal companion at level 5 that can be brought up to speed with Boon Companion. Until then you will need to buy mounts, but even purchased mounts benefit from the speed increase and from Ferocious Mount.

Gendarme Cavalier is the mounted charge specialist.

Dragoon Fighter, with the feat chain to pick up an animal companion (store-bought buddy until then), and AWT feats, looks like it could be effective.

With the companion feats, Bloodrider Bloodrager, especially if it can pair with Primalist for beast totem, has some perks, arcane bloodline would let his mount share his free Displacement.

With the companion feats, some multiclassed abomination could be done.. Swashbuckler 1 for finessed mounted lance, Dragoon 5 with the AWT that doubles WT damage when finessing, savage tech Barbarian (especially if advanced or hi-tech firearms become available) or Bloodrider or Mounted Fury for the rest?

No primalist is banned in PFS.

Ok to the OP.

You can build mounted combat with different classes. Each class has its pros and cons.

For the most damage Cavalier is the best. But what it lacks are the best mount choices. In PFS they use RAW so a class can only have what mounts the class comes with. There are a few archetypes however that expand your mount selection. Personally tho I think the Horse Lord has a ton going for it. Being able to charge with a Scimitar and treat it like a lance is amazing cause you can crit on a 15-20 threat range which is about 1 out of 3 attacks. A lancer crit is an instant kill in PFS.

Next class you can examine as a good choice for mounted combat is paladin. The divine bond allows you to summon your mount. A good ability when dungeon diving or cliff climbing as taking mounts places is hard. The downside is your mount selection choices are extremely limited. But the damage is there due to smite.

A big favorite of mine is the Ranger class. It adds skills other classes will be missing and in PFS skills are commonplace and very important. Also with the Beastmaster Archetype you have the entire druid animal companion list to pick a mount from. This is the main draw for me. This allows exotic mounts like dire bats, rocs, and my personal favorite Giant Geckos. To see a Ranger mounted build you can look at my avatar. It's good up to level 8 when I stopped playing him due to him dominating the tables. My only regrets on the build is a few of my purchases. But feat wise it is put together well.

Lastly there is the Barbarian. I'm not a fan but others are. It's viable but lacks skills and must be built differently than the typical mounted builds of other classes.

There are a few more classes that can play at being a lancer but most of them are not as good as a full BaB class and stay feat starved. Others in theory might look good on paper but suck in practice...I'm looking at you hunter class...quit playing your better off the mount than on it.

here are a few:

Druid, nature fang will get a lot of free mounted feats, 9 levels of spells and fun. less charge damage - but that only even thr math and preventing the DM to "let me kill the halfling" game style.
when you can - charge, otherwise -use you full spell list.

Ranger are amazing. beastmaster can indeed fly at level 4 , on a medium mount - which is superb. you charge ALL the time.

Cavalier - order of the sword are trucks. they charge a lot - but kill with 1 attack.
horse lord is even better than claimed before - as it use spring attack over charges! there is NO STOPPING you .
15+ for a crit - go DEX dervish build and kill a lot.

fighter , have a special archtype that add.... a familiar. or , all melee can get it with eltrich heritage.
a Mauler is medium size that go into harmelss animal when not needed.
add the feats that add super AC to all around and you got a nice halfling here.

i wanted to make a mauler familiar with a ranger, slayer or fighter - that use HIDE in plain sight when not using the charges and charges otherwise.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Halfling hunter with a Roc companion. You can fly all around the battlefield and really f with the GM :). Mine thinks he's a caviler and has a lance.

Mounted Fury Unchained Barbarian. Buy small sized Lances. They'll do only 1d6, but they'll be 1-handed weapons now, with a -2 penalty. Go the two weapon fighting route, which will put you at -6 penalty to all attacks if you choose to try to hit with both. Pick up the Beast Totem Rage powers, along with Accurate Stance. At 10th level, you'll have +10 BAB, something like 16 STR (+3), a bonus from rage of +3, and a bonus from Accurate Stance of another +3. On a charge, you'll get another +2. After that -6 penalty, you'll be swinging at +15/+15/+10/+10 when you charge, all of which does triple damage.

Your feat tree should look like:
1 - Mounted Combat
3 - Ride-By Attack
5 - Spirited Charge
7 - Two Weapon Fighting
9 - Improved Two Weapon Fighting
11 - Greater Two Weapon Fighting

And your rage powers are:
2 - Accurate Stance
4 - Lesser Beast
6 - Beast
8 - [Player Choice]
10 - Greater Beast

4 chances to hit on a charge, each of which (conservatively) will hit for 3d6 + 24. If we try to add other trickeration to the build, you can easily milk this for far more damage.
