We had Creative Director James L Sutter on the Know Direction podcast last night to dive into Starfinder, from the journey behind the scenes making the nascent decisions for the setting, to what we know about the game, to the logistics of creating a Starfinder CRB/Campaign setting book that also includes space fantasy tropes, and finally to what has changed and what's on the horizon now that the news is out.

Thank you for your efforts but this isn't for me.

I think the only new information that really stands out to me is that spells are insinuated to still be around but reduced in number compared to the core rulebook.

Scarab Sages

I liked the description of hyperspace and ftl. I loved the event horizon reference there.

I'm also thrilled about the economy change, and that the costs for high tech weapons will not be balanced against the cost of magic items.

Interesting, can't wait to find out more.

We'd love to offer transcripts, but that is a beast unto itself. We're limited by our time and budget as volunteers. If you could recommend trustworthy freeware that transcribes audio or video, we'd certainly look into that.

I look forward to listening to this, sadly listening now is impossible dew too factory noise.

First time listening to this podcast but overall a good show, might have to check out a few more episodes.

Absolutely, positively not trying to rain on your parade. But that underlines why I personally don't consume podcasts or vidcasts. The time burden is placed on the consumer. I can read a lot faster than you can speak. Pretty much the reason why podcast/vidcast producers don't spend the effort to make transcripts is the reason why I don't consume them. So hey, I'm very, very glad you've got an audience. I'm only posting this to explain why I made the request.

So, to be clear, thank you for what you do.

To me, that sounds a little like d20modern where classes had only up to 6th level spells, IIRC.

However, I like that it also gives the opportunity for something or someone to be unearthed with "amazing" ability who is unfamiliar with technology, such as a standard cleric or wizard from current Golarion's timeframe.

For Audio podcasts (and Audiobooks) there are players that will play back at increased rates. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's far more efficient.

No offense taken. I sincerely would like to include transcripts with the podcasts, but the only way we could do that is with a program that does the work for us (or a very dedicated volunteer).

Do those sorts of programs exist?

I don't think so. I mean, to a degree it's just speech-recognition, but the issue is you're actually interlacing two (or more) people talking. You could probably pass a recording through Dragon Naturally Speaking, then clean it up and separate it into individual speakers, but it'd still be a lot of work.

Thanks for the interview, guys! And thanks as well to everyone who watched—making the game is taking up so much of my time that I don't get to the boards as much as I'd like to, but I really enjoy answering y'all's questions... at least as much as I can at this point. :)

Liberty's Edge

I'm excited to listen to it when I get the chance.

No real questions I expect will be answered in the 'cast. Except, maybe, why we're not getting a softcover Beta Playtest of the rules next GenCon rather than the hardcover.
Especially given there's less than a year before it goes to press (likely significant less) and we keep hearing that things are still early. It doesn't seem like a lot of time to really test the system.

I like that we got confirmation in the Podcast that they are adjusting the Weapon math (I really hope this means they are looking into a multi-die base damage, i.e. 2d4, 2d6, 2d8 ect.) and things like Armor may also defend against things like Lasers.

All in All, some really nice info.

Just to point out another reason for transcripts; non-native speakers. My english is good enough for reading/writing, but is just a bit sort for hearing, speacially american one (I'm more used to british english).

Oh, one question for Sutter and the others Starfinder authors...there will be new details of Starfinder on GenCon?

At the 1:04:05 mark, James Sutter was asked if there will be a Starfinder panel at Gen Con? He replied that "I will be shocked if there wasn't, I'm not sure what is planned, but probably".

So here's hoping there will be a panel, and some more juicy information.

Armor never worked for Stormtroopers. Just saying.

A quick Google search for video transcription software turns up some promising options, from $0.00-99. It makes sense that there would be a market catering to deaf consumers... but i have never tried any of these options.

I can now confirm there's a Starfinder panel at Gen Con! I don't know what new info we'll reveal there—we're all pretty leery of saying too much when the game's still a year away—but I'm sure something new will leak. :)

They had to use cheap knock-offs because of severe cost-cutting what with the Emperor's super secret Deathstar siphonning all available military budgets

Well hey, details would be awesome but if you all want to just get up on stage and spend an hour on comments such as, "we can neither confirm nor deny rumors that (death stars, light sabers, mind control parasites, Protoss, alien bug player races, 6th level capped casting) will be present in Starfinder." That would still keep us spun up and commenting for the next year.

But will your panel have a video uploaded afterwards and will that video have a transcript available? :P

Looking forward to this. Even though I won't be attending I'm hoping someone will put it up on YouTube.

As am I, more Starfinder is always exciting. Even if it's just another blog post, I'll be excited!

I don't think there'll be anything official, but I believe Know Direction is planning to record and post it.

If I can make it, I will be so there.
