I'm wondering how you figure out the hitpoints for an animal companion. I've looked in the CRB and it says that at lvl. 1 they start with 2 HD, but other than that it doesn't go into any more detail on the subject. This is for an Ulfen ranger named Sterk Seastrider who will have a wolf named Hati Mooneater and a half elf hunter named T.J. Breckenridge with a T.Rex named Gwangi.

Flutter, thank you so much for your time and effort into this amazing link! One question, just so when I sit at a table with people who are already leery of my character, all of this is legal in the PFS correct? Provided I have the correct resources, this is how I will build my animal companion from here on out? Oh, one more question; my big cat gets large at 7, can she still use pounce and grab if I cast reduce animal on her? Thanks again for this!

Some of the dinos went extinct before I wrote it or after I wrote it, not sure which, but yes, the Log is specifically written for PFS.

Eyup. Kitty has those abilities because of their Hit Die advancement, not size. Just like you wouldn't gain them for putting a dire collar on a medium kitty you don't lose them for using reduce animal.

Thanks again for all of your help. I have been trying to figure my animals total attack bonus out and I can't find it. Does she get the normal Two-Weapon Fighting penalties? And how do I determine which of her attacks is primary or secondary, and is there an associated penalty with those as well? I surfed through the Druid's Log and can't find my answer which means I probably missed it, or it should be obvious to me lol!

What kind of critter do you have? The T rex and wolf don't have multiple attacks, so they don't two weapon fight.
The chart here lists natural attacks
There are three catagories of natural attacks
Only: A wolfs bite. Thats all they get. Usually deals Strength and a half damage like a two handed weapon. At 7th level your t rex gains powerfulbite, and will deal 2x strength damage.
Primary: A cats bite, claw, or rake. Deals strength damage.
Secondary: An untrained horses hoof. Takes a -5 penalty to hit and deals 1/2 strength damage
Starting Statistics: Size Medium, Speed 30 ft.; AC +4 natural armor; Attack bite (1d8); Ability Scores Str 14, Dex 16, Con 10, Int 2, Wis 15, Cha 10; Special Qualities low-light vision, scent.

Thanks for that, I have a big cat (White Tiger), so her full attack is 2 claws and bite (and if she hits, rake)? But does she get penalties for attacking with her claws at the same time, and her bite? So neither her bite or claw takes the -5 for secondary? I play in a group where there is another person with an animal companion, and it looked like she was not doing it right. We had a discussion about my attack bonus, and I thought I was doing it right but her boyfriend said my claws were secondary and got a -5. The DM, while a great guy and good DM, was unsure and didn't want to take the time at the moment, and I wanted to present it to the group before our next session. I am new to the group, they have been established for a while, and I am constantly having my sheet taken to look for mistakes. Of which, I may add, there haven't been any, only disagreement on my animal companion. Oh, I'm a lvl 6 Hunter btw. I thought building a hunter with a flanking animal would be neat in combat situations, and they always get on me about not having point blank/precise shot. But my build as I see it is a force to be reckoned with. Just trying to make sure i'm doing it legally.

Your friends boyfriend would have been right in 3.5, but in Pathfinder natural attacks are defined as primary and secondary, and they stay that way (unless you add in a manufactured weapon, or you only have a secondary attack).
Your big kitty attacks with both claws and bite at it's full attack bonus.

You only get to rake in two situations.
When pouncing as part of a charge (which comes online at level 7) or if you begin the turn grappling an opponent (such as after having charged and grabbed with a bite or claw attack).

Which then gets really weird with pathfinder changes to the grapple system.
Since maintaining the grapple is a standard action ,
as a standard action you maintain the grapple and (probably) deal bite damage.
You then rake twice. (not 4 claws)
There is a rules argument for
Free action: release the grapple
Full attack: Bite claw claw rake rake (since you technically started the turn grappling) and regrab him with the bite.
But its more than a little rules iffy to tell kitty to let go of dinner , and that the best way to damage your food is to let it go after every time you bite it.

I have seen it presented as:
Start turn grappling and therefore get two free rakes
Drop grabbed target
Make full attack
I might be inclined to knock that on the head or require the companion to be pushed as that is far from what you might expect an animals natural behaviour to be. Once an animal has something grabbed it is likely to keep hold of its prey to finish it off.

I always thought that the opponent needed to be grappled so I never calculate it in, and then they're all you hit it with two claws so you get a rake. So I add the damage in, but I often times find myself outnumbered in discussions like that. The next nearest Society games are over 2 hours away, so I don't ruffling feathers, but I feel like the amount of time I put in researching these things are wasted. Thanks to this forum interaction I will have more substance to stand behind my arguments. Thank you all so very much!
