Interesting idea, particularly in light of the dreams I had last night... but that might be TMI. Except for Freehold, of course, who has no TMI threshold. :)
How's the beach? I can't go near the water until July 20, which is making for an unhappy summer so far.
That must be tough, surrounded by all of those beautiful beaches in Colorado...

Nah. These ponds are pretty clean, and the edges are usually sanded. They are Kettlehole ponds for the most part, so their waters are relatively clean and clear.

And now I am learning differences between fen, bog, marsh, and swamp...

Lol. They better bring their fur parkas if they want to make a go of living around here.
Me, I know there are beasties in the salt water hereabouts.

Ngah. o_O
Having grown up around the Great Lakes and some big rivers, I am not used to giant beasties in the water, aside from the occasional big, nasty gar. But those stay in the water where they belong. So when I went to San Francisco and took a nice morning stroll on a pier, nothing prepared me for a sea lion popping out of the water RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME YAAAAAH!!!
Cue frantic backpedaling and falling on butt.
I swear that thing was laughing.

This information has it's uses when writing RPG material! How many adventures are set in swamps, after all?

I was walking on a dock in Monterrey and came across one lying across the path. He looked at me and I swear the look he gave me was 'what?' Those guys ruled the waterfront. You could hear them barking all night too. Arf arf arf all night long.

LOL,
We have gators down south here. I'd much rather be surprised by a sea lion! ;P
Old Wizard story time,
My dad, back when he was young and in the Navy, had a weekend off in Florida. He decided to spend most of one day fishing in an out of the way river/creek, (whatever it was). He caught ONE fish. It was a small, feisty fish that dad said 'tried to eat my line, it looked like was going after me!'
After banging it repeatedly on a nearby rock, the fish was caught.
A young couple (boyfriend and girlfriend) came by about that time, and asked dad if he had any luck. He showed them the fish. They asked what he was going to do with it. he said toss it back in. The guy said he'd take it, and dad gave it to him.
Newspaper, next morning, picture of the couple holding dad's fish.
Headline, 'Unidentified sailor catches Piranha in local river'
Proof that little beasties can surprise you ANYWHERE! ;P

Actually I have a bog-dwelling fen marsh swamp not sure yet race in mind, slowly awaiting to be written and posted since, er, probably last year.

My Ravenloft game has been adventuring in a swamp for a long time now (mostly because it keeps stalling because of me).

A group of plane-hopping mercenaries are currently trying to figure out a mystery involving some dead and or erased gods and a sickened Yggdrasil. After some deliberation... I don't think I can join the game. I made a character and everything, but after taking a step back, I realized I just can't follow through. Sorry man.
