Magic Missile's Damage

Rules Questions

I'm not often a spell caster so i had a question about Magic Missile's damage. I know it is 1d4+1 and you get an extra missile every two levels but I've been seeing people showing 2d4+2. Does that mean every missile gets +2 damage or do i pick a target to get that extra damage. Like is it (1d4+2, 1d4+2) Or is it (1d4+2, 1d4) Or (1d4+1, 1d4+1) Again sorry I'm not good at understanding magic all that well, and please have a book name or a linked source. Game masters are very heavy sticklers for that kinda thing

They're just adding the two missiles together. They can strike the same target but on rare occasions will attack different ones. Each missile is 1d4+1.

Okay thank you so much, I just didn't understand why it was worded like it was in all the forums, Something about how it catches my eyes. I mean if that damage was to each missile it would make sense of why there are so many items/spells to just stop it lol.

It's still quite good. No saves, no roll to-hit, can hit ethereal, only a first level spell. There's a reason almost everyone has it.

The real problem is when paladins with good UMD get their hands on it.

I thought there was a wizard class, Evocationist? that could increase the damage of their spells by 1 pt.

Evocation school wizards can increase their evocation damage by 1 point/2 wizard levels. Certain races can boost specific elemental damage through the Sorcerer alternate favored class bonus.

Intense spells, the evocation school power, increases the damage of one missile only, not all of them.

I do not see what is the problem with paladins and Magic missile? Their Smite power is far more powerful than 1d4+1 force damage.

Smite works on magic missile. It's not game breaking but it's a nice little way to deal with ghosts and such.

You just answered your own question.

What?? It works with spells too? I have not realised that. I have to reread Smite evil more closely.

Down this path lies madness.
