Quicken Spell Q.

Rules Questions

When using Quicken Spell as a Sorcerer can I use a Rod of a different metamagic spell?

Please and Thank You!

Yes, but you have to use a rod that works for the new adjusted spell level with Quicken added in.

Are you sure, that would mean that using quicken would increase the DC also...

The spell doesn't change levels does it?

Quicken does not increase the DC, no. But you have to have a Rod for the level that you cast the spell at, and a Quickened Haste is cast out of a 7th-level slot... so Greater Rod is required.

I thought Rods types were linked to the level of the spell not the slot level???

Incorrect. Lesser/greater/regular metamagic rods are keyed to the spell slot you're casting the spell from. An empowered, maximised fireball is a 9th level spell, so a greater rod is required to quicken it.

Holy Shmoly I never new that, and I'm pretty sure the whole club have been using lenient made up rules for years!

Cheers dudes!

The general principle is that with the exception of heighten, for anything that depends on spell level, you use the level of spell or the level of spell slot, whichever is worse for the caster.

I think there is a FAQ somewhere.

Found it

Has it ever been clarified how Wayang Spell Hunter, and similar effects, interact in these situations?

Yeah, that FAQ sets the general precedent. Which is "Whatever is worse for the caster, do that".

Right, I'm aware of the FAQ, but WSH is directly modifying the slot used. Wouldn't WSH subtract 1 from the spell slot regardless of which way you calculate it?

ie:

Empower is a +2 adjustment normally, but with WSH it's only a +1 adjustment, thus allowing you to lesser matamagic rod an empowered Scortching Ray?

Honestly, I think this is all rather poorly described and confusing, even with the FAQ.

WSH modifies the spell slot used, so yes, you are correct:

Spell Level: 2
Spell Slot: 3 (2 + 2 -1)
Worst of both for mmrod: 3

Off topic a bit, but a maximized empowered fireball is an eighth level spell not ninth. still needs a greater rod though.

I wasn't responding to you, I was making a statement for the general topic.

Until that FAQ was released, I don't believe that was the general consensus. A great many people were "doing it wrong" for YEARS.

Which, by the way, it totally against the actual RAW. All the FAQ did was clarify that, in this case, RAI wins out.

It was clarified in 3.5 FAQ to be the worse for the player. Specifically in 3.5 the question was "what level does it count when stored in items" and the answer is what is worse.
