Feel free to start your own AMA, and even make that the theme, but we have a thread for trivia! It's called, "Did you know..." and it lives here in Off-Topic! It's pretty cool, most of the time!

To this day I've been mentally reading if it were just a random made up word... And in my head it sounded something like "Tah-ctic-seeleeon".
I'm sure that's is more comon than one would think at first
Yeah, it happens more often than I imagined - amuses me to no end, And probably more than it should. I'm not entirely sure why it does so. It does make sense, that it would happen, simply because the Internet has so many weird names, and strange ways of presenting people. It is funny though, as I'm not actually trying to hide anything. I really thought it was being a little obvious, well, at least to those who knew of Final Fantasy tactics.
Either way, let me, you and try omega zero, and you Nico's, should all answer the superpower/superhero/etc. question!

I always went by the mantra of "If you have to ask....."
I have to ask: what is the end of this phrase?!
There are so many things it could be filed in with!
(And feel free to answer the questions, too! I tried for make the invitation as open as possible to get as many interesting responses as possible and to give out favorites for them! :D)
Oi, that's a lot of questions.
Well, you certainly don't have to! Mostly, I really like seeing people's answers and getting to know a quirky side of their personality better as a result. Even in deferring (but especially if reasons are given), I get to know them a little better - and that's nice, too!
(It's because I like people and like hearing things they like; also I'm a nerd with specific interests and so share those with others, too. Don't tell anyone the second part, though - aim pretty sure it's a secret that no one will figure out!

I'm mostly asking basic questions about fantasy concepts and wish-fulfillment in different contexts with randomized dice rolls.
I 'm basically asking:
- random number of superpowers you'd choose and why
- random number of superheroes gestalted as self and why
- random number of class levels chosen and why
- random mythic tiers you'd have and why
- published NPC you'd be and why
- random CR monster you'd be and why
- gestalt variation of all the above and why
- what LoZ you'd be a protagonist in and why
Hope that helps!

I 'm basically asking:
- random number of superpowers you'd choose and why
fly, I guess. it would help to avoid the terrible traffic.
- random number of superheroes gestalted as self and why
- random number of class levels chosen and why
I guess some levels of slayer because the combine brain, agility and strength plus some levels of sorcerers because magic.
- random mythic tiers you'd have and why
I have no clue about mythic rules.
- random CR monster you'd be and why
High CR good outsider. No archons or angels because too much rules and duties, no azatas because they are weird, and no agathions because they are to flurry. I guess some unique good outsider that wanders the multiverse.
- gestalt variation of all the above and why
High CR good outsider that fly while wandering the multiverse slaying things?
- what LoZ you'd be a protagonist in and why
Never played any Zelda game. ask me about lufia or chrono trigger and maybe I have an answer.

If you could have 1d4 ⇒ 1 different super-powers, what would they be and why?
Reality revision. The ultimate gamebreaker, able to do anything I can imagine.
On the other hand: BAM! You just gained 3d6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 4, 1) + 2 = 9 levels in a Pathfinder class (or classes)! Which class(es) do you pick, and why? Incidentally, if you could spontaneously switch races, would you? And if so, to which?
Oracle and Paladin, of course. Miraculous powers and martial strength, everything I need to be a paragon of virtue. And what better race than aasimar?
Similarly, you won the super-lottery, and gained mythic tiers! 3d3 + 1 ⇒ (1, 3, 2) + 1 = 7 of 'em! (And you gain class levels to match; please feel free to change your previous answer if this does so for some reason.) What path do you take? (Alternate option: substitute a single tier for a simple mythic template.)
Trickster, of course. A guileful warrior on top of phenomenal cosmic power.
Yet another query: you monster. Specifically, you CR: 1d30 ⇒ 21 (or less) monster! Which are you?! ... and would this have been your first choice? If not, which would be?
Half-celestial kyton. That was easy.
But the wheels of fate-time have spun again, and your everything has been transposed into that of someone else! You've just become a prepublished NPC from an official source! Which prepublished NPC is it?
Probably Valais Durant, what with the multiple personalities.

Awesome answers!
Nicos: Cool answer! I'm surprised at "no angels" - I didn't think of them as automatically having too many duties/responsibilities beyond being a powerful good outsider (as their alignment can be "any good"); while each of them come with a theme, it's noted that many of the individuals within a group vary. Is there something else that makes them seem more duty-bound to you?
TOZ: awesome! But... but... no Zelda? (;D) I must admit, leaning toward divine classes in the real world is a thing I do as well... I usually chicken out at the end because of my plethora of questions about what it implies and specifics of setting/reality/faith/etc. :D

Mostly that I remember angels being created for a purpose instead of being more spontaneous like the other celestial. But it seems that is not the case, and I don't remember why I have that impression, perhaps from an earlier edition must most surely I was just wrong about it.

DISCLAIMER -- The spoiler below should probably only be perused by Tactics and greentea; all others, be forewarned -- it's another "faith" thing. Furthermore, it's a HUGE rant.
So: we had some topics come up this morning. I've probably forgotten some of them. The ones I recall: 1) male modesty, 2) "women/wives are cattle in Jesus-land", 3) reproductive rights (yes, very closely linked to #2, but worthy of mention, given the intensity of that part of the "conversation"), and maybe some others.
I'm not going to launch a Scriptural exposition at this point, as it will likely remain uncalled-for.
Here's where the biscuits got burned: Not only am I, personally, a direct contributor to all that plagues humanity (as I mentioned last time around), but, evidently, I am willfully ignorant of the right way to be a Christian!! And "why" is this the case?? -- Because I arrive at different conclusions than the Baptists/Church-of-Christers/Flavor X/Group N from the same Bible that those groups allegedly abuse!
So: I'm not a Christian the "right way" (as defined by loudly avowed non-Christians, which holds no small measure of ludicrosity to my mind); I, as a disciple of Christ, am a root source of humanity's problems; I don't even know the very source material that provides the strongest case for valid, meaningful Christian faith (and this acknowledged by the brilliantly atheistic/agnostic Bertrand Russell) that my co-workers refuse to even read!
Where does this make sense? What am I not getting that makes these assertions valid, true, and sufficient to justify abandoning my reasons to believe?
I'm wrong for believing just because some other people who (may or may not) believe got some of it wrong???!!! OUTRAGEOUS.
I'm willfully ignorant because I don't see the justification for social injustices in the Book that identified social groups do (apparently)??!! FALLACIOUS.
I just walked away, saying something to the effect of: "I can't even be right talking about what the Book says!" I cite book, chapter, and verse that directly pertains to the injustice bemoaned, and what clearly contradicts the perceived "evil of the Jesus-people", but I'm still wrong for even suggesting my coworkers take a look at that source material and make up their own minds??!!!
Again I am reminded of what Dr. David Berlinski said in Ben Stein's Expelled (love it, or hate it, but at this particular point it IS spot-on) -- paraphrased: "Richard Dawkins is a very smart man, but he has not invested himself in the disciplined study of theology so that his theological assertions can be regarded seriously in the first place."
How can it be right to judge ANYONE by a standard to which you would be unwilling to submit yourself? Isn't that exactly the logical contradiction to which many people point when they quote Matthew 7:1 in isolation from its context?
deep breath
I hope this isn't too much, guys. I'm not trying to derail anything. I just needed to touch base with some fellow believers whom I know can relate to the struggle. Thanks for listening.
All that aside: Started getting things together to play on a game site. Since I'm so Stone Age-y, it'll probably take a year or more for me to get enough material set up to run my game, but I think it'll be pretty awesome once it's ready. Have any of y'all done the online campaign bit?

At the spoiler: understood, my friend. Some people that I otherwise respect very much on this very site have similar opinions. It is best to simply not engage on the topic: attempting to "prove" yourself correct will do no good. Instead live a life above reproach; do so within their sight, when appropriate but don't go bragging about (or even personally regarding yourself in terms of) your good deeds when not.
As to the other: yea, But it hasn't worked out for me as well as I'd like. On the Paizo boards, outside of a few other instances, for the most part it seems that I caved to some sort of non-existent pressure, and end up flaking out of the game. It's really curious. I don't know why, I feel this mental pressure when there is not, but, I suppose, that's just a weird mental thing that I have. I think thegreenteagamer has had better experiences than I.

RE: Spoiler Rant (should I have invoked the persona of my planimal alter ego?) -- It's never been about "I'm right, everybody else is wrong", and I'm pretty sure they understand that: they work beside me, so they know my flaws pretty well. I just get bent out of shape when the babies get tossed along with the bathwater. Christians are, still, human, and therefore prone to error(s) in their evaluations; but painting all of them with the same brush because of the failings of one, or a few, or an established socio-political movement is to deny them the same basic privilege the most staunch humanists demand -- "Let me be human!" God made Himself understood; it's not His fault that we keep fighting over the errata.

I'd argue that "A Link Between Worlds", "Twilight Princess" and "A Link to the Past" (in that order) are the three best Zelda games so far. :)
I've not had the opportunity to play ALBW, as I lack that system.
TP was pretty definitively the best story telling experience of the Zelda games that I've had. However, the gameplay could leave something to be desired, on occasion. Not because it was bad, but because it had a few minor issues. Mostly, either repetitiveness, or a lack of willingness to commit to actually using its resources and beyond the dungeon in which you acquire them.
LttP remains one of the best 2D action adventures I've ever played.
Honorable mention goes to both Windwaker and Skyward Sword - both had engaging characters and great story. I liked the gameplay of Windwaker better, and probably the specifics, too, but SS was so daggum beautiful, and I loved the characters so much...
I haven't played any of the portables or I'd comment on those more.

Crossposted in AMA threads: it's a Paizopaloozaganza!
<Name>.
<Nnnnnaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmeeeeee>.
Super-serious series of questions*:
* Nnnnnnope.
If you could have 1d4 ⇒ 1 different super-powers, what would they be and why?
(Assume corollary powers required to make a given power work are part of it; i.e. Since you'd need super tensile strength/durability to, you know, not-die when you made use of your super-strength power, you get them both when you say "super strength" as a singular option.)
Why?
If, instead, you could be a gestalt of 1d2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 super heroes, who would you gestalt to be yourself? Why? Which comic universe would you run around in? Would you prefer to be in that one, or this one?
On the other hand: BAM! You just gained 3d6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 4, 1) + 2 = 9 levels in a Pathfinder class (or classes)! Which class(es) do you pick, and why? Incidentally, if you could spontaneously switch races, would you? And if so, to which?
Similarly, you won the super-lottery, and gained mythic tiers! 3d3 + 1 ⇒ (1, 3, 2) + 1 = 7 of 'em! (And you gain class levels to match; please feel free to change your previous answer if this does so for some reason.) What path do you take? (Alternate option: substitute a single tier for a simple mythic template.)
Yet another query: you monster. Specifically, you CR: 1d30 ⇒ 21 (or less) monster! Which are you?! ... and would this have been your first choice? If not, which would be?
But the wheels of fate-time have spun again, and your everything has been transposed into that of someone else! You've just become a prepublished NPC from an official source! Which prepublished NPC is it?
What campaign setting do you run around in? Why?
As a final thing: blend any and/or all of the above questions into a single ginormous question: an optional blend of a prepublished NPC, monster, and some superheroes all walk into a bar... and out comes you, as a gestalt of those guys, the race you choose, some extra superpowers, and have extra class levels and mythic tiers on top! What are you?! (Other than "awesome" - naturally.)
Equipment is a non-issue (like adjunct super-powers; what you need to do <X> is assumed). Also note that any significant others can be brought with you.
"Official" and "Pre-published" are loose terms, but general expect something that has a solid publishing company and identifiable map/world/conceits behind it (like WotC for Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Dark Sun, Greyhawk, etc; or Green Ronin for Blue Rose, but not "True20"; or Paizo for Golarion, or the Maelstrom, or the upcoming Starfinder; but not "the Bestiaries" or "the Planes" or things like that - basically things that people can find and nerd out about with you). Similarly, if it has a solid AP out for it, that, too, is acceptable (like Legendary Planet; or any of Paizo's APs). It should probably be a d20 variant, but it can be whatever you like of those many variants (True20, Blue Rose, Paizo, 3.5, 3rd; etc.). That said, if a Homebrew or otherwise "weak" entry just needs to be there due to compelling reasons... okay. Similarly other systems. Let us know why! Computer and video game translations of such (Neverwinter Nights and/or expansions/sequels; PFO; etc) are acceptable as interpretations as well.
Similarly, for comics, it needs to be superheroes that people can reasonsonably be expected to come across - "that one I made up with my cousin as a kid" is an awesome answer, and worth noting and why, but prrrrooooobabaly isn't the best choice, unless it's just so powerful that you've GOT to. In which case: sure, but bring us along for the ride! Related, the super need not come from one of the "big two" in comics, so long as the people and world is both recognizes me and accessible - choosing The Incredibles world is valid (and awesome), as is Spawn (blech); you're not just limited to Marvel or DC. Similarly "standard" powers need not apply - so long as it is clearly communicable, it's fine (even if all the field specifics aren't clear, that's okay - knowing you're powered by our yellow star is fine; you don't need to know this, but it's acceptable if you do).
Finally, presume you have the basics necessary for a happy life. Your spouse, best friend, and so on, can all be considered to "come with you" (should they choose to do so) wherever it is that you go.
Oh, and one more thing: if you lived through a Legend of Zelda (as one of the Links); which would it be, and why?
Thanks! Enjoy!

...
I'm lurking. My depression has been eating away at my creativity completely, and I feel guilty to my PbP games if I post in other locations but not as a GM or player.
I even gave up GMing my live game, and turned the reins over to another player to GM a game of Legend of the Five Rings so I could just be a player and not have to herd the cats.
(I responded to your rant spoiler in PM, since you messaged me earlier anyway.)
On the plus side, Saturday I play a dishonorable shinobi from the Scorpion clan, so that's cool.
Maneuvermoose |
I'd argue that "A Link Between Worlds", "Twilight Princess" and "A Link to the Past" (in that order) are the three best Zelda games so far. :)
Never played a Link Between Worlds (it was after I stopped playing high-budget video games). I liked Twighlight Princess, but I don't think it really measured up to the standard set by OoT. Maybe I was partly disappointed due to the huge build-up before its release, but it barely felt improved over OoT eight years later. Also, even with the long development time, the last two dungeons felt really rushed to me. Like, if I'm grading a student's problem set, and there were eight problems assigned, and the student hastily scribbled down a few lines for the last two problems but couldn't really solve either of them: I can tell they rushed through the assignment at the last minute and didn't really have time to do those last two thoroughly, and that was the same feeling I got with the level design of Twighlight Princess. The early dungeons were incredibly detailed and long, and the last couple didn't live up to my expectations.
Although, I think the final battle of TP might qualify as the first time any incarnation of Ganon used a lightsaber, so props to the goddesses for granting him Sith Lord powers!

I wasn't trying to glitterdust your Stealth check, man. I had to go radio silent a couple weeks back, myself, though it's probably unnoticeable. You're appreciated, and missed. I hope I did you no wrong with the "post-bait".
I've never played LotFR, nor any Orient-oriented game, really, but I like the sound of "a dishonorable shinobi from the Scorpion clan." Stab 'em in the back, dose out the poisons, and set large buildings afire. Or whatever things like that will bring out the fun.
Hang in there. I hope the world turns your way soon.
@Tactics & Co. --
I've been contemplating my responses to the supers/comics/monster quiz-post . . . .
I ought to be ashamed. In fact, I *am* ashamed.
At no point, in any way, did I ever make a reference to Magneto.
McKellan and Fassbender have done very well portraying him (Fassbender's Magneto is really the only redeeming factor in X-men: Apocalypse, really). He is a classic, believable, relatable villain/anti-hero. His power set is awesome.
So -- take every bit of what I said back there, and stack Magneto on top of it. Then we might be close to a "right answer" for me.

Ian McKellan is a legend.
Fassbender is incredible.
When the first X-films came out, I didn't like the divergence from comic lore.
Now I just accept that it's their own continuity with very different realities.
EDIT: as an aside, the First Class-Days of Future Past-Apocalypse set are pretty much the best of the various X-film series: while Pocky didn't exactly blow my socks off as a villain (I found this one a tad weird; his abilities too poorly defined, even by Pocky's normal comics standard of "various powers" - even though this guy was technically more well explained, it's functionally less; and I think he want built up enough in previous films for him to be introduced then entirely eliminated in this one - that said, I do think they did a solid job under the paradigm they were working under), over-all I found the film solid; the other two were excellent.
EDIT: oh, and like everyone else, I was so thoroughly charmed by this version of Quicksilver, I couldn't help but find the Avengers 2 a lesser version: but that's not because he wasn't cool... it's just that this one is so daggum good.

Yeah, the McAvoy/Fassbender arc has been far superior to its X-brand precedents. Given the way Apocalypse ended, it does seem unlikely that we'll have a chance of seeing that character again (though stranger resurrections have been kinda par for the course in the Marvel Comics Universe), which is, I think, unfortunate. And non-twin Quicksilver *is* better than Avengers' Quicksilver.
Tacticslion |
Yeah: though I love the original comics origins, the X'verse films Quicksilver is just so daggum compelling - his need to live, his desire to both be apart but also to fit in - his simultaneous enternally outsider status (due to literally being "quicker on the uptake" than anyone else via being quicker in general) combined with his want to be with other people and mischivious streak plus desire to be lauded/liked/do "good" (whatever that means) combined with his all-to-human insecurities just makes him so daggum endearing. Plus his deep joy and delight at his own powers, and solid - and somewhat sensible - association with seemingly otherwise disassociated compelling and memorable music numbers during his heroics make him even better as a movie-character.
The Avengers' version Twinsilver simply never had a chance: they couldn't reuse any of the themes or element that made the X'verse film-version so iconic or likeable (else they'd be hewing too close to the mold/copying), but very reasonably felt obligated to put him in by the inclusion of Wanda (despite not including Magneto, 'cause "no mutants; that's X-property and legal shenanigans"... so, um... 'kay), so I really think they did the best they could: and the actor did a very excellent job. I went in expecting exactly nothing from A2 'Silver and was surprised by how much he got me to care about him.
(I do think Whedon was quite clever in foreshadowing the mortality and limits of that 'Silver, though, right from the beginning - while I didn't notice it until retrospect, when he threw Hawkeye's words back at him, it wasn't quite as surprising as it seemed like it should have been at the time (a very curious sensation) - after contemplation, I believe it was because Whedon did a very good job of preparing us for what could happen so it wasn't "out of the blue" and instead was "a reasonable (if tragic) event that made total sense in this world" in much the same way as Hawkeye's own limits and difficulties were explored. (All said, I really liked A2 - a lot.)
Tacticslion |
So. I've had a "GM token" as it were - a redeemable "plot coupon" kind of thing - where AI can play a sort-of-kind-of redeemed (ish) illithid in one of our home games. I have been really struggling on where, when, and how to use it. See, the thing is, it's not just a redeemed illithid: it's a redeemed illithid that was permanently and irrevocably transformed into a half-elf/aasimar/elan/kalashtar/inspired-thing via a combination of polymorph any object, bestow greater curse, and a cursed magic item that made it a chaotic good that thing (which was immune to possession). This means it lost all of its means of attack.
Now, he's immune to all non-good possession/channeling effects and to all evil charm/dominate/compulsion/emotion/mind-affecting effects (and similar), but... that still doesn't make him a good adventurer.
Decent physical scores but lousy saves and BAB with no personally aggressive abilities does not a good adventurer make...
But I've finally figured out what I want to redeem him on: Skulls and Shackles.
His punk Fort save will actually do him a favor to start that AP, while he adjusts to his new role, and his SLAs and SUs and stuff will prove worthwhile. His CG attitude should work well for that AP and his weird nature shouldn't be all that odd over-all. I think I'll propose this to the potential GM (my wife) and see what she thinks! :D
