Sorry I haven't got it running yet but I had to go to work. The time change is wreaking havoc with me. I don't mind kibitzing on this thread but I would prefer not to have any out of game chatter on the game thread. Anything out of game that needs to be said can be said on this thread so feel free to comment on this thread.

Quick mechanics issue--did you want to roll for our actions, or did you want us to cite our own rolls in parentheses after the actions. I'm comfortable either way, though frankly the less mechanics-speak on the page leaves more room for story so I'm all for letting you do the rolling personally.
Arctaris
Did I miss a question or two? I apologize. What were they?
As for the rolling thing; have you looked at Grimcleaver's play by post campaign in the campaign journals thread? That is probably the best format. They post a description of their actions and then below that they post the results of their rolls and of their actions. I will post the actions of you foes when it is their turn in initiative. At the end of a round I wrap all of your actions, the monster's actions, and anything else that happen into one description. It is also my intention to post a breif description of what has happened every day on this thread.

hehe I get all mixed a bit as there seems to be several play by post threads now and no section for all them to be grouped, but I was idley curious why 28 points between skills was selected rather then 26 or 30 or any other number; but, mostly I am wondering how rolls for actions like skills, attacks and whatnot are going to occur. I would have liked to play, but I still dont really understand how people make up a character that is approved and will fit in the campaign. What is the 28 points for; seems that is only 6 stats of 4.6 to me that means very little. I just dont understand the process of making a character in PBP. Seems you need characteristic score you need to generate some how; I have seen some posts where people use a generator online somewhere, but I have my misgivings about that. Though your game is now closed as i understand it; could you explain the character creation process step by step and how it differs from the pen and paper game I already know?
thanks.

seems to me all your players who posted already know whats going on.
It's nonstandard point buy from pg.20 of the DMG. You spend one point for a 9, then one per up to 14, then two per to 16, then three per for a 17 or 18.
So for example it costs 17 points to get an 18 in say Wisdom (1 to get to 9, then 5 more to get to 14, then 4 more to get to 16, then 6 more to get to 18, 1+5+4+6 = 17.) Because the cost is so steep, few people will sacrifice to get a 17 because they'd have to take low numbers in almost everything else. But if the DM starts with higher point builds, characters can spend more to have more high stats rather than all lower ones.
28 points constitutes a "tougher campaign", 25 is "standard", 15 is "low powered" etc.
CHARACTER SUBMISSION:
Usually a DM (like Arcturis) will announce a game, and will ask interested players to e-mail him characters. Usually there's some max player limit (I believe he set it at six or seven) and at that point the game is considered full. When this happens the game is actually run on the Campaign Journals section. It'll be much nicer when there's a Play by Post section--but for now that's what we've got. It's there that the game goes on. So far there are three games going on that I know of. One is run by Saern and is set in his campaign world of Saern. One is run by me and is set in the Paizo shared setting created by Lilith called The World, specifically my setting is set in a region called Shandura. The third is this one, which has just gotten underway.

Valegrim, I'd never created a character by point-buy system before this game either - but fortunately I'd been following some ongoing discussions about point buy on some other threads on these boards, so I'd recently re-read the description in the DMG!
It seems like a failry fair way to do things ... avoids those "yeah, I rolled my character at home with my lucky dice and got three 18s!" situations.

hehe with stats going up to like a bazillion now; 18s are nothing; I guess I probably wouldnt care if a person just made up their numbers and played what they want, but that is just me.
Am kind of curious now how exps will be awarded; I am hoping that a break down of exps is given either at the end of session or of a story chapter or such as I am very interested in one day running a game of PBP, but of course would like to play in one first.
Also, how does one whisper to other players without everyone gaining that knowledge and how do you have private conversations with the gm; these thing happen in my game with whisper paper (notes) and am curious how it translates.

Yeah, it's all really up to the indivual DM. I was personally fine with people rolling their own numbers and whoever runs the game is free to be as openhanded as far as character race and class as they want. I could see games with Troll Warlock PC's and other games where races and classes have to be straight from the main book. Just DM preferences.

Yeah...me too. I think I'll do the variant XP awards from the DMG, basing XP off standard encounter amounts modified for good roleplaying and outstanding accomplishments. Thinking about it I really should dole out XP for that last encounter while I'm online today.

I guess you could e-mail each other. I've always considered the DM more of an aid to good roleplay though rather than an adversary, so I would probably tend to just have my character whisper whatever to whoever and assume people can keep their out-of-character knowledge where it belongs.

Oh guys, I think I made a mistake with Anarath's character. I have always assumed that a wizard or sorcerer can get their familiar for "free" at first level at character creation, but pay the 100gp materials cost if aquiring a familiar at a later stage.
Re-reading the familiar section over the weekend it appears that may not be the case - I think I was supposed to pay the 100gp cost - 100gp that my character doesnt have!
So, Arctaris if this is the way you play it, we'll assume that Anarath's raven, Midnight, is not a familiar as such ... yet. Which means Anarath will not gain the benefit of the Alertness feat, or +3 bonus to appraise checks at this time.
Let me know.
Arctaris
I think that paying for your familiar is ridiculus, you don't just walk into a shop and say "I want that raven". I also don't think that you summon your familar. In my campaigns when you take your first level in sorcerer or wizrd you familar finds you so you can keep the raven and all of its benefits.

So, just a summary of our group, for those playing along at home (and for my benefit!)
Anarath Coldblood – Male Elven Necromancer
Greis Rashire – Male Human Sorcerer
Dohrlok – Male Dwarf Monk
Corvin Kilgannon – Male Human Fighter
Gawlak Ironstone – Male Dwarf Cleric (Kord)
That all correct guys?

Oh...well then make mine an owl named Alabaster. Grants a +2 to Move Silently and low-light vision.

Hmmm, I was fairly sure an owl granted +3 to spot checks in low lighting conditions or some such. Unless perhaps there's a change I'm not aware of!
Alabaster and Midnight, I like it.

The way that I am doing XP is that I'll let you know how when you have enough to level up. If you are casting a spell with an XP component I will subtract it from your total. If anyone has a problem with this system and has another idea just let me know and I will consider it.

Turns out the low light vision is for the actual familiar. The master gets a +2 to spot checks. This is out of the 3.0 book, so it might have changed.

Hey, Arctaris I do have a question. People in game have been asking what I know from stories, etc. I have been able to glean from the locals. Considering how open and ready with stories the locals here seem to be I figure I might know something. I don't have Gather Info as a skill per se, but I got 20 unskilled (17 +3 for Charisma) on a roll. My guy's been staying in town for probably three days prior to the game, just listening to local stories and paying local guides to take him out as close as they were willing to get.
So do I get any interesting stuff to share with the group? Any juicy bits too delicious to share? Just wondering. If you need to communicate with me more privately feel free to shoot me an e-mail at crypttales@yahoo.com
Anarath Coldblood
Indeed!
Well I'm going offline shortly. In the interest of moving things along when the rest of you guys get a chance to post, if we're buying goods Anarath will purchase a pint of lamp oil and two days trail rations - shouldn't have any problems with affording that.
He'll generally leave the question asking to others, but if its not covered by anyne else (or the answers not supplied by Greis), he would like an inquiry made about possible survivers as mentioned in the other thread, and also what is known (if anything) about creatures inhabiting the manor or the region in general.
Oh Arctaris, should we send you daily list of prepared spells via email, or just post that info here?
Greis Rashire
Never having done anything like this, he'll likely buy things as advised by his adventurer cohort Corvin. He probably wouldn't have an inkling of the usefulness of any of the stuff sold there. The idea of a sturdy pack and a lantern make sense to him, but chalk? a long pole? a mirror? Until the reasons for them are explained to him he's likely to poke around looking at them quizzically and leaving.
Granted Corvin is in charge at this point in the expedition. Greis will chip in a fair share toward the expenses, but certainly less than 10 gold. He's not looking to exhaust his coin buying a ton of obscure junk until there's real signs that his investments will be returned.
[This is not to say however that -I- don't think we should gear up with lots of adventurey stuff. Light sources are good, but there's also the issue of pitons to nail doors shut with, crowbars to wrench doors open with, rope and grapples to climb up into areas that we might need to, a spade for digging up--whatever, and possibly a torch or two--less for the light and more for the fire+club benefits of dispelling swarms and hurting nasty trolls and critters that fear fire.]

What technology level is this adventure; does plate exist, do xbows, would you compare it to 12 century or 16th; am kind of curious, in my game various cultures are at various technology levels which adds some interesting aspects.
is the monetary system and costs straight out of the book? how big is the city they are starting in and availability of items hehe I love that line in "oh brother, where art though...This place is a geographical oddity, it is two weeks from everywhere" hehe when talking about the availablility of Dapper Dan hair oil.
I guess I dont really have the feel of this starting city yet, am only asking, so if it is somewhere and I missed it; just give me a pointer pls; if I do this sometime I want to do a good job.

Please send me a spells prepared list every game day. I am running a standard D&D world although the tech level is a little higher than normal.
I did post something meant for another thread in the Grimmbold Mnaor thread for a second but fortunatley I realized my mistake while there was still time to delete the post.

I'm interested in playing. Time may be an issue As I'm in my own little timezone (Hawaii time) out here in the middle of the Pacific. If you are interested in having me I could use some info on character creation a pela.
Sorry I'm out.

That's okay. I think what happened was we were at the smithy, Corvin was at the tavern. I went to get Corvin, Corvin said your character showed up, you showed up in the tavern, then you talked with Dohrlok (so now Dohrlok's at the tavern?), so then I showed up at the tavern, I left, then you talked to me...yeah it's a mess. Heh.
